Ok, I think its time to order one. Do you connect it directly to iPad, is it MIDI class compliant?

if you use zeeon in a host like AUM or AM, you can reliably map midi with the host's midi map list. works perfectly.

Yeah, it works perfectly until you want to use the second layer. Then everything falls apart:

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/24051/zeeon-using-midi-ccs-to-control-layers-separately

Don‘t get me wrong, I love Zeoon and use it regularly. But the midi implementation is half baked, at best, and an update is nowhere near in sight. Drambo (hate the name, btw) is looking very promising, but hoo boy, it seems like a huge project for a single developer. I‘m expecting @giku_beepstreet spending all his time finishing Drambo first, and when it’s out in the open, squashing bugs he couldn’t foresee for a while. But how can I trust him to do that when his old app has had known bugs for years?

I love zeeon and can’t wait for drambo but I also like the reverb on zeeon to scale correctly on my sound card running at 96khz.

As with any relationship, time will tell. I will do my best, I don't like divorces.

I believe it is. The only bummer at the moment is that there's no iPad editor.

Don’t hold your breath. I was always amazed that they never produced one for the QueNeo given it’s intentionaly iPad-esque form factor. Or for the QuNexus for that matter

Yeah, fair enough. I've gotten used to programming all of my controllers and circuit off of a laptop so it shouldn't be a massive problem.

Yup. It’s not the end of the world. But odd, given how iPad friendly the devices are. I (and I suspect many Qu-whichever owners) would have happily paid a small entry price for an iOS editor.

The BopPad hasn't been out a full year yet, and I'm hopeful that an app will come to edit it but I'm not holding my breath.

I have only been using it as a standard drum controller, mostly with DrumPerfect Pro, but also with iSpark & Beathawk. I'd like to do more experimental synth stuff, but bouncing between a PC to program it and the iPad to test it is just enough of a pain that I haven't done it in awhile.

I'd really like to do more than 1 note per quadrant. I was hoping that I could sort it out with MIDI Flow but I haven't figured it out yet (and haven't tried in some time). I know it's possible - there's a Max for Live PC Mac app that can make it happen - but I don't have a Mac.

I'll get back there - it's a fantastic tool, just gotta figure out how to best dial it in first.

That and I need to do some videos with more peripherals...

I know, not ideal. I've recently discovered there is a Focusrite Control app for my Scarlett 18i8 only to find that it is a remote for the laptop version. Not funny.

  • @Daveypoo Are you sure it's just one note per quadrant? The manual says it is up to 6!!

  • @supadom that's six simultaneous notes per quadrant, which is cool because you can literally play a chord. What @Daveypoo and others would like is the ability to play different notes from the center out to the edge of each quadrant radius. Indeed, it can be done using Midifire/stream byter--i have it working. The main issue seems to be related to how the BP handles note on and note offs, especially when the notes arrive densely. I've seen questions on their forum where users see the same issue I've seen with "lag" between notes played across the radius with the max4live app. More recently I've had good luck using Gestrument Pro to very quickly and easily set up notes along the x/y axis that follow the radius on the BP. But again, I see weird behavior where the cursor in Gestrument jumps around when I lift my finger off the surface of the BP.

Bottom line: BP is best used as a pure percussion instrument. It's super responsive and bullet proof. It's tedious to use the web editor to change parameters on the BP and then plug the USB into the iPad but it does work flawlessly. I suggest setting up touch pressure on the radius to CCs that can control Turnado effects. Right there, you have hours upon hours of fun doing some hand drumming with effect spaz outs.

Shit, while I still don’t understand the difference it is a total bummer. In fact what I understood from the manual that I can play scales across the quadrant’s radius.

Mmm, I’m glad I didn’t pay much for it. I’ll defo try the Turnado trick but from the looks of it it will be back on Ebay before too long.

So from what I understood, one touch of a single pizza slice will produce up to 6 simultaneous note messages but those cannot be split unless other translating software is used.

See how it goes when it gets here. I’ve kept quneo for about a week....

Looking very interesting - out of interest will it have Elektron style nth note triggers? I can see the probability options which is okay (personally I think randomness is over-rated as a musical thing).

However triggering every nth (i.e 4th or 3rd) iteration of a note cycle would be brilliant especially if that propagates to midi out and other parameter locks type things.

To be honest it will be more like Op-z style. Each step may have a chain of components. Its like a small programming language. e.g. "Every 4th iteration" -> "Play note" -> "Jump to step 10". Modularity opens up new possibilities e.g. there is a Trigger counter module that can modulate other parameters or a "Smoother module" that smooths other parameter changes.

Excellent move :) Elektron sequencer is in some ways starting to feel a little old in the tooth lately. Drambo looks like its coming out the gates pretty damn strong :) Recently been interested in op-z, deluge and the Five12 vector sequencers and drambo seems like its at a similar level of depth and functions in many ways, if not more so. Excited!

Deluge is great! Completely new experience ..

Ah man, I want one.... been on/off gassing for it since it was announced!

I maniacally buy and sell audio stuff to try everything out (have some fun, get inspired and steal best ideas ;) To be honest I get bored quickly with most of them. Deluge was this big wow moment i've been waiting since a longer time. No other groovebox comes close. This paired with ipad = ultimate portable everything :)

A small session with Deluge and a physical modelling synth

Nice! I have a Rav Vast also in G Pygmy scale.
    What scale is yours?

  • Celtic D Minor - I like this one the most

There's still lots of use for it, but @lukesleepwalker is right - so far it works best as a percussion instrument or drum trigger. It hit my price point and that's what I wanted it for, so anything else is a bonus for me.

If you watch any of my videos, you'll know I'm a huge fan of the McMillen K-Board. The responsiveness is fantastic and the BopPad is made from the same material. I am seriously considering getting a full size K-Board but that's WAY more than I'd like to pay. Anyway, the FEEL of the McMillen devices really works for me, so I dig it. That and you can really beat the piss out of it without feeling badly, yet it's sensitive enough for hand drumming.

It is misleading how it is described--i also thought I'd be able to play scales from the tip to the crust of the pizza slice. But nope.

This is such an obvious thing that everyone keeps asking for on iOS (see their sleepy forum) that you'd think KMI would see the sales potential but the forum response from KMI has been tepid at best. I'll have to dig out my Midifire template and share here to see if anyone can figure out how to make stream byter work right. There's probably a way by filtering out some MIDI data.

I agree - there's clearly call for it since I've seen mention of this exact thing MANY times on many forums.

We'll see - I have no reason to not give them the benefit of the doubt.

  • There seems to be a simple utility by them they mention on their website.

    https://www.keithmcmillen.com/blog/boppad-101-multiple-notes-per-quadrant-boppad-zones-app/

If that can be somehow transcoded to iOS then that would be the end of it. I guess I’m the fresh faced newbie trying to achieve what others have failed in the past year. Maybe.

I’ve just sent a private FB message to the author of that article. Let’s see.

  • @lukesleepwalker @Daveypoo Has any of you guys tried it with elastic drums? Don’t know why but it seems to me like a perfect match for bop for synthesised drums sounds.

  • Check what Colin says there at 0:25! Of course it is incorrect since a second later the pitch doesn’t do what he says but I’m not surprised there’s so many people that have understood that functionality to be there.

  • but bouncing between a PC to program it and the iPad to test it is just enough of a pain that I haven't done it in >awhile.

That's exactly why I got them to take back the two I backed on Kickstarter... Dumbest industrial design I can think of in recent time. A music instrument with no damn interface?! Plus it tracked position horribly...

But being the sucker I am, I went out an bought the Pearl MalletStation, which is like a whole bunch of these in a big chasis! Of course it gets the same crap editor, but in terms of "dollars per s#it-to-hit", it's a decent price.

  • @supadom said:

    GOT IT!

I can't wait to hear what you think - I like my BopPad very much, but I haven't really dug into the programming of it since there's not yet a way to do it directly from the iPad.

You think they will make a iOS editor? I wonder if streambyter can help maybe?

In replies on their forum they more or less say that Apple should just allow web-midi in iOS browsers. And by saying that, they can back off on their promise (during Kickstarter) to create an iOS editor, and just blame Apple.

I have a BopPad, but have been too busy this past while to really spend time with it. And yeah, having to disconnect it from the iPad, then plug into my iMac, then fire up their editor app to make changes... yawn...

  • Another misleading promo. This time direct from the company. Check 0:54.

  • After all of this I hooked up my BopPad yesterday and spent some time jamming with Ripplemaker, Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM, and a few others. It was a total blast (until I was interrupted by an argument with thd wife, but that's a different thread...) and I don't regret the purchase at all especially given the price point. Even as a straight drum trigger it's a ball to mess with.

I like banging with sticks on things to make them go bloop and bleep.

  • That one is not so misleading because it is using pitchbend, not notes in a scale. I believe the BP defaults to pitchbend on across the radius. If you were to plug it into iPad, fire up AUM with, say, Beathawk in a channel, you'd get exactly what is shown in the video. Which, again, for percussion is pretty damn fun because you don't need to be precise with the tonality. Playing a melody is a whole nother kettle of fish.

  • Any news about the app? :)
