i have a track which starts with 3 notes held for quite a few bars. Often in playback these notes are getting stuck. It’s playing DRC through AB if that makes any difference. Can anyone advise?

Do the notes get stuck if you substitute other synths? That would help narrow the issue down between X2 and DRC.

Also, if you have a monitoring app such as Midi Tools Monitor, you can stick it in the path in audiobus to see if the note off is being sent when it should be. If it is, then the fault is definitely with DRC.

Just swapped for Viking synth and that seemed to stick the notes too. I have midi tools monitor and can’t see note off being sent.

If I start from half way through the pattern it turns the notes off so I wonder if it’s something to do with how long they’re being held for? They’re being held for just short of 33 bars.

I was able to reproduce the note-off being missed if looping is on. With looping off, the note off came as expected.

This was a 33 bar pattern with a single note extending to 1/16 note short of the end of the pattern, and loop set to the pattern length.

Loop mode is off as far as I can tell. The song keeps playing way past the pattern and the notes stayed stuck.

Probably the same bug though just something else slightly different.

I didn’t do a lot of iterations of the test. It seems pretty clear it’s a bug, or limitation of the app, though. Good catch.

  • @wim @SevenSystems I was hoping you might be able to help me with this. I'm trying to use MF Keyboard (via Audiobus 3) to act as an input for Xequence 2 but I'm not having any luck with it. I planned on using it to control Gadget 2 but I can't think of anything. I even experimented with Gadget 2 Taipei but it's not working either. Any advice?

Working fine here. Can you post a screenshot or an AudioBus session of the setup, or describe what you’ve tried? I just loaded MIdiflow Keys in the midi input position, with X2 on the output position in AudioBus, pressed record, and played some notes on MF Keys. It recorded the notes without any problem.

With the exception of not having a chords mode. The internal X2 keyboards are excellent. Is there some particular reason for wanting to use MF Keys?

Here's what I tried to do

I wanted to try and do a multi track recording. And also, chord mode, slide over keyboard, 3 keyboards at once, and the transpose feature is why i tend to use MF Keyboard. If it had a drum pad mode similar to Beatmaker 3 that worked with the 3 keyboards, it'd be perfect lol.

  • I don’t think I understand what you’re trying to do at all. But I don’t see that you need the virtual midi outputs. MF Keys should be received by X2 with no further hoops to go through. I don’t think we’re gonna get there by exchanging screenshots. Maybe try uploading the AudioBus preset?

@gregsmith OK, confirmed. The problem only appears if the long notes are sent through Audiobus, not through Virtual MIDI.

@Michael, could you take a look at this when you have time? It's unrelated to the receiving synth it seems (I just tested with Poison-202 as Audio Unit and it also happens there).

(I would double-check that it's not an issue lurking in Xequence's AB-related code, but I'm out of office for a few days and I doubt it because the code paths are essentially identical apart from the final MIDISend...)

(before anyone asks: the preset is missing the Xequence project... first time it happened to me! Unfortunately, while on holidays on a phone away from a computer 😂)

It's easy to reproduce. Create a long pattern of 33 bars or more. Add a single note that spans the entire pattern minus a short amount, such-as 1/16 note less than the length of the pattern.

Here’s a preset that has the X2 project saved in it. The note-Off doesn’t play at the end of the pattern. However, it does play later if you stop the transport in X2 after the pattern.

Sorry, @wim. Been trying to upload a preset but it's not working. It says it's uploaded but i don't know how to get the link. I pressed the upload button but it's not generating a link.

Would you mind sharing your present that worked?

After you upload then you can press share again and then you'll be able to copy the link. It's a bit confusing that way. I was just thinking about you and was just about to try to set up a preset to do what I think I understand of what you're trying to do. I'll mess about now and get back to you in a bit.

Rats. The Xequence project didn’t come through with the preset, and Gadget doesn’t have state-save, so I can’t see how you had things connected. Sorry to have wasted your time, but at least you know how to share presets now. ;)

Let me see if I can come up with something that I think will work the way you want it to.

@Samflash3, here’s a simple setup. I don’t know if it does what you want, but it works. We can start from there:

    1. Add Gadget as an input in the AB3 audio page.
    2. Enable advanced midi settings in Gadget.
    3. Add a Gadget track with the gadget of choice. Expand the tracks view so that the midi assignments (the button will be labeled “All”), and set the midi input to “Gadget (Virtual Port)”, and change channel from All to 1.
    4. Add another Gadget track, and change this as above, but midi input channel 2. Repeat for as many Gadget tracks as you want to use.
    5. Add MF Keyboard in the input position on the AB3 midi page.
    6. Add Xequence 2 > Midi Input 1 into the output position of the lane.
    7. In X2, go to settings and enable “Midi Thru”
    8. In the midi settings for the track that you want to control the first Gadget track, set the output to Gadget, channel 1. (Add a track with these settings if it isn’t already there)
    9. Repeat, adding or changing a track to output to Gadget, channel 2
    10. In the X2 timeline view, touch the track that you want to play. You do not need to have any input assigned to this track. If you do have one, remove it. MF Keyboard will play this track, which will pass the notes through to the first Gadget track.
    11. Touch the other X2 track, and now MF Keyboard should will play the second Gadget track.

Other than the chord pads, and being able to have three keyboards onscreen rather than two, I don’t think MF Keys adds anything over the highly configurable internal X2 keyboard and drum pads (which already have templates for Gadget btw). But this should work.

Of course I’ve probably missed the mark of what you’re trying to do, but at least that’s a starting point.

If you want to do a multi track setup, with multiple outputs being controlled by MF Keys, then the setup is simlilar, except you should disable Midi Thru, and enable multi-track recording in X2, and add Gadget Virtual Midi outs next to the X2 instances in Audiobus. Then enable multi-track recording in X2 and set the inputs for each track to Audiobus (Not Audiobus 3) > Ch 1, etc.

  • Wow, I needed this! Thanks Wim!

  • @wim You're amazing. Thanks. It worked.

  • I wanted to use Xequence to record the MIDI of my live session so that if I wanted to, I can easily edit it. With MF Keyboard and my Akai mpk Mini, I can theoretically have 5 instruments at the same time.

You’re welcome. Glad we got it figured out.
Out of curiosity, which way did you go - the first single-track setup where you touch a track to have it receive MIDI, or the multi-track setup where you set which channels you want for each track?

I went with the multi channel route. Seems to record but now it's duplicating whatever is tapped on.

Gotta figure this out. But I'm glad one step is done.

Found it. I just had to disable my live keyboard as it was also routing through Audiobus. The MF Keyboard didn't duplicate.

Now I just have to figure out how to optimize performance on my apps so that Xequence can run smoothly.

  • @Wim do you sequence GR-16 with X2?

  • @Tones4Christ said:
    @Wim do you sequence GR-16 with X2?

Yep, that's one of my favorite things to do. But, what I typically do is get a jam going first in GR-16, then record it to X2 with the Multi-track recording, then refine that and arrange it into a song in X2. The big downside is for drum parts you end up with one track for each drum part. That can get a pretty clumsy.

I do have a few scripts and setups that make it possible to sequence GR-16 tracks 9-16 from one X2 track. But since normally I do most of the idea development in GR-16, I don't use them that much.

  • I dug it up and man it’s so awesome! So many tools so little time😳😂🤪🎹☝️

Okay, thanks guys, I see what's happened. Audiobus wasn't expecting to be getting legit MIDI scheduled more than 20 seconds in advance, and was discarding those events to stop buggy MIDI senders from exhausting its buffers. I've increased that threshold to 10 minutes.
