On the desktop, it doesn't matter to me that Battery doesn’t have a sequencer as I wrap it inside an Ableton Drum Rack and multi-out. The great thing about working that way is that you can run Maschine in Controller mode and have access to all 128 cells in the 16x8 Cell Matrix (switched via Machines Groups A-H, 16 pads in each group).

You can do this with a Launchpad too. It's what I do with Battery in Live. Open a Drum Rack then Battery then drag a Battery Kit and drop it on C1 on the rack, Show Chain List, Show/Hide Input Section, click the drop down box on Receive, scroll right up to the top of the list and choose All Notes and you can now play all the different pads in Battery via C1 on the Ableton Drum Rack, with your Launchpad. I have a custom Lp template from C0 to C5 or 6 that helps.

I purchased a Launchpad Pro Mk3 strictly for my iOS device and ended up purchasing a second one for my desktop system as the pads are so playable. Every time I started playing via my Ableton Push 2, things just didn't feel right. For drums, I still tend to use Maschine Mk3 hardware, but I could just as easily use the Launchpad Pro, with the added benefit of 64 pads.

I still use Push 2 for general Ableton interaction but Novation hit the ball out of the park with the Mk3.

I have never used anything else. I just got here lol but yeah, I love the LPP Mk3. The only midi controller I'm still kind of wondering about is the Push 2. I had a Maschine Mk3 but it was a second hand one so I just used it as a controller and that was very meh. The only thing that bothers about the Push 2 is the Push 3. Like, it has been a minute since they released the 2. Anyway, what's it like? Game changer or just, like, useful but not mad?

As an Ableton user, it's essential. And as long as you look after it, its resale value will be reasonable too (when Push 3 eventually arrives). Push 1's still sell well on eBay.

It's very playable too. The Launchpad Pro Mk3 edges it out, but until the arrival of the LPP Mk3 it was as good as it got.

The reason I haven't sold mine and moved over to the LPP Mk3 completely is because Push 2 is so well integrated into the Ableton ecosystem, it's essentially another limb.

Crazy what you say about the Push 2 in relation to the LPP Mk3. It makes me realise that I'm only using a fraction of the Lp's functionality. I need to go into a shop to check out the Push 2. Cheers!

  • Has anyone ever managed to make use of the Push (2) as an iOS controller in some capacity or another?

Too much hassle to get anything meaningful out of it.

Yeah, that’s been my experience as well. Thanks for the reply, @0tolerance4silence [Metheny!]

    To do list:

    • Hit up Craig’slist to dump the Push
    • Pick up a new Launchpad.
  • @ashh I bought Seekbeats yesterday and i already falling in love with the sound engine and the randomizer is awesome

Finding the SDS X AU beta pretty good for my current needs. It’s simple but affective and using the app in a middle of a chain a lot can be accomplished.

Bearing in mind it’s still in beta so report back any issues to the dev.

    https://testflight.apple.com/join/05hGzasa

The parameters pitching, pan, and level can be modulated in AUM for each of the 9 pads plus the sequencer patterns can be changed that way. Building chains in Drambo or AUM opens up a lot of possibilities.

Yea I’m really liking the new version. It’s clean, simple, you can see everything on one page (with a little scrolling) easy to load kits/samples. Glad this app went Au.

Full agreement with the others, it's not worth the effort.

    EDIT:
But as I mentioned elsewhere, Maschine or Launchpad Pro Mk3 can be used with iOS devices as long as you're happy to route the MIDI via a laptop with a DAW of some sort (which is fine for me). Or there's probably even a win10/macOS MIDI utility widget that'll do the same without need of a DAW.

    Agreed.

I’ve mapped my LC XL to it.
Volume for the mixing and the three big circle thingys to tweak the tones and decays etc.

Yeah, I know best I can do at the moment in regards to descriptive language.

Drm computer paired with Drambo on the other machine.
    It’s seriously fun.

  • Drumcomputer is great and like most of the apps they make. But it still baffles me they do not think of the essentials.
Which are prev/next buttons for skipping sounds and make these buttons midi mappable

tap, scroll a list, navigate, find sound, cant preview it, tap again, repeat is not a workflow.
Its a design flaw many apps suffer from unfortunately even when they have a great features on other areas

In terms of battery, I think GR16 ticks many boxes if you tread a pattern like a kit.
Its only 16 samples. But it comes close to the functionality of a battery.
It just flows so great in the area of sound selecting and editing, not much comes close.

    Randomize is DC's preferred workflow.

My biggest gripe with GR16 is that I can't change the MIDI Note map, as I can on DC.

Great stuff. Thanks for the update, made me smile.

The Seekbeats synth engine is awesome (and I very rarely use that word). But it’s such a pity that the infinitely modulatable synth engine isn’t modulatable via MIDI. MIDI allows only triggering notes and pattern select (he internal sequener isn’t up to much beyound the basics). Such a pity that awesome audio engine was never rewritten for AUv3 with full automation.

For it’s time, it was revolutionary. I still keep on my phone for public transport jams and I’ve often sampled sounds I’ve created with Seekbeats but as things stand, its more sophisticated audio toy than flexible production solution.

But it definitely puts a smile on your face. :)

  • @ashh @jonmoore Yea i got an instant smiley after previewing the sounds
That’s how I plan to use it too, as great sampling source. Would be nice to see in the future at least a update for bugfixes and keeping it alive. I’ve experienced sometimes if i leave the update abd come back to it that it stops working and i have to restart the app.

Since this post I spent sometime again with DrumComputer and it starts to click more with me( getting better Kicks via Synth engine or Sample import). For jamming or lighter Drums I use the Ruismaker’s and for everything else creative Drambo. Elastic Drums was always on my list but Drambo keeps me away from but then again ED has the great automation and no patching is needed.
All these great little sounds modules

  • I just noticed that Octachron was updated today and it includes a built in (editable) template for FAC Drumkit. I alway liked the idea of Octachron but worried that it was abandonware as it hadn’t been updated in nearly a year.

I’ve just been playing this last hour with FAC Drumkit with two instance of Octachron (to trigger all 16 FAC Drumkit pads) and a midi instance of Drambo on each channel to provide automatible envelopes (wish this was possible in FAC Drumkit directly, but there are other midi triggered processing effects that can be set up in Drambo as well as envelopes). This is the closest I’ve got to a Geist like experience on iOS. I love the flexibility of Swing settings in Octachron, which coupled with its parameter locks and plentiful extenal CC mappings, helps make the whole setup feel like a single instrument rather than 3 discreet elements.

Hammerhead is also a juicy setup with Octachron (especially useful for samples longer than 1 second and choke group driven hats).

And the final bonus is that both FAC Drumkit and Hammerhead play samples in place. In my case I keep my sample library on an exernal Sandisk as it takes up a lot of space, and both apps play the samples directly from the external drive (or possibly from a sandboxed tmp playback folder).

Do any other drum synths/samplers play samples directly from external disks? This is an essential feature for any sampler I would use. My iPad is low on storage so I usually stick to synthesizers and avoid samples entirely.

I almost started a thread, maybe I should search first…

What synths, apps stream from external storage? Other then the apps by Gospel Musicians aka Midiculous.
