Yep, I've always been very happy with AUFX apps.
I have an ass full of impulse responses I use on the mac and on iOS, I don't think it matter that much where I put them in, if its this or that app or plugin, I don't care, the impulse has the sound im going for ...
I found some very nice emt samples I use all the time
What a strange statement !
For me, it's the file management area that iOS is particularly poor at. Coming from a Windows background and starting a project by putting all my sounds in folder and being able to organise a project that way, I couldn't create anything like some of the stuff I've done so on the Desktop for years - like a 25 minute song for one thing.
Another point - sample libraries...
what about sample libraries?
its audio, map it in a sampler, and use them
I know there is no big boys sampler on iOS (yet)
If by "strange", you mean "valid"....
I prefer alogrithmic reverbs. For impulse responces space designer is the best i used so far.
It´s not only sampling tools rather awesome solo instruments for cello, violin etc. for expressiv playing.
Sector has a unique UI but it doesn´t make unique things which are not available for a desktop.
And all i said is I CAN`T GET 95% of my tools for iOS. That might not be the case for others of course!
That's the biggest issue with iOS for me, I like folders, and to be able to manage my own stuff. That would have been a killer feature for me with the Pro, so I could use it as a proper graphics tool. As it is it's just a bigger thing.
Proper folder structure and the ability to stick a USB stick in and back up/swap files without resorting to a third-party online service.
No it's not 'valid', it's hasn't been validated as such, it's just an opinion.
Regarding samplers, Kontakt sample libraries for example can be really large, with all manner of complex scripting driving all those articulations. There's nothing like that on the iPad (yet).
I make electronic music, I don't need no string orchestra, can't help you there
What exactly about a particular software platform makes it more possible for expressive performance over the other? I would assume a controller is 9/10 of that equation.
That´s O.K. of course. Especially for electronic things iOS can do a lot (but also not enough for me . For orchestrial sounds it lacks a lot.
I'm not asking for your help, I'm making a point.
@igneous1: sorry should have said @cinebient
Just not a particularly convincing one. And here, in the Audiobus forum!
Why isn't it convincing ? I agree with this thread mostly, but that statement you made was a load of nonsense.
Are you suggesting that you can offer to me an example of a desktop DAW piece that a creative artist couldn't generate in their car, with an IPad? Because I think that's nonsense.
Do you want a list ?
Does it have to be strictly for use in cars ?
Does the artist need to be creative, necessarily ?
I'm pretty sure you won't create the next Hans Zimmer soundtrack on an iPad alone ... Audiobus doesn't even do 48khz ^^ (now)
Do they have to be necessarily creative?!?
I have all the answers I need in that one sentence.
IOS is great no doubt but no need to push it out of reality. Creating everything with an iPad in the car....come one.... lol.
Expressive play on an iPad? Sure (see Animoog) but there are even more advanced controllers and i have solo instruments with 50 different articulations. THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! with iOS! I wish it would but it is NOT!
Again.... Show me.
Besides there no 5.1 or 10.2.2 or whatever crazy setup you may have ,on iOS nothing supports that, or did I miss something ?
it's funny to me how you guys keep calling out users and how they make their music, totally changing the subject from the tools at the heart of the topic, get your heads out of the cloud. There are many apps that have had an incredible impact on peoples musical lives that you can't run on an iOS device, no different than how Samplr actually compelled me to get an ipad! That is why a 'Surface' or the like might have value to allot of people and it's as simple as that they don't need to justify it to you.
This is all academic. The most creative types can generate more interesting stuff w/ 4-track, a bass and a rusty colander than some mannerist technocrat with a room full of hardware.
Kontakt requires 4Gig RAM to operate, so I'm sure the iPad would convincingly sieze up !
@Cinebient it's quite possible to get the best of both worlds.. I use PC running Reason 8 and Cubase (sometimes, when not on iPad). It's very easy to dump all sounds/loops into folders on a PC. In fact I do a clean up once a month by doing this.. And once on your computer they can be used in desktop productions. - OR vica versa.. You can make sounds, loops or whole takes on desktop and import to iPad (Sector, iDensity etc) mangle them and import them back to desktop..
Don't want to get in the middle of a flame war as one of the things I like about this place is that it's, well, cool. ;-)
Seems like some of this discussion has veered off into internetz, this tool is better than that tool land.
They're all tools, right? And everyone knows you can do amazing things with just about any kind of tool.
The main point I tried to make earlier is not that one tool is generally better than another, but that for me, a computer DAW can be more efficient than an ipad. One example - like others have said, I feel like file operations in ios are slower and more cumbersome than in osx or windows.
IMO, Mr. Bill's Ableton Live tutorials offer a great glimpse at how efficient computer DAW workflows can be:
Careful, watching Mr. Bill is liking eating your favorite snack food - once you get started... :-)
