iOS updates come way too fast. Apple needs to wake up and realize not every developer is a billion dollar publicly traded company driven by planned obsolescence.
My live setup involves 2 iPads (and a phone with AB remote) feeding into Logic, where the sound gets routed for surround, also into Vdmx, where it triggers/manipulates videoclips for realtime projection.
For song recording ideas get sketched into GB or Auria, then imported into Logic, where I have all I need for complete un-/structuring/routing/messing... .
I wouldn't wanna miss any of the devices involved, each just does things otherwise unthinkable.
All is good, I like the tools that inspire me to widen my scope. Ios did this since the start (much more than anything on osX, for years of experiments...).
...just my tiny thing, everyone is welcome to work completely different and find satisfaction there/thus.
Thanks everyone for healthy debates, cheers, t
Amen.
come on guys, apple can do what they want and we will complain any way,
if the cycle wasn't that fast we would sit here and complain endlessly I don't see any progress in iOS
I still want into the promised land of the post pc world, and I am not going to bet on OS X
it took apple 5 years to come up with 3d touch so get happy now and do something amazing.
@lala it took apple 5 years to come up with 3d touch so get happy now and do something amazing.
It is true we should probably know the drill by now, its sometimes difficult when you get wrapped up in a music making vision and dream that turns into a different reality.
I still beleive another 5 years before iOS is where i personally need it to be, so i have more or less accepted fate as you @lala.
Time to focus some creative energy
im not sure if it takes another 5 years, getting pretty close now, the hardware is there ...
one or 2 years?
i love to play! music with my iDevices and i have a lot of after the years, old ones too down to iphone 3GS/iphone4/ipad1
i dont wanna use a Laptop in my live/creative playing set,
PC just for PostProd/Mastering or LoopCutting/VideoEdit...
i record into 2x Zoom8TrackRec on SC-Card ALL devices are Battery powered!
...but sometimes i would smash the apple devices @ the wall,...
when i JUST wanna copy a audofile into the iDevice
or copy one file to another device (old ipads1/2 iphone4 too NO AIRDROP....)
or just wanna have my SoundLib in a shared Dir.,
NO DROPBOX cause no WLAN in my cave-Studio
or SampleEditing /loopCuts....
AudioShare is nice but with Soundforge i cut 20times faster!
last but really not least,
i still sync manuel TAP & Start/Stop,
cause its not working tight or let alone groovy
IN one device 2xapps sync will be practibel but over the Air > Master / SLave with multible iDevices....its still a crab....
I'm sure things will improve over time, but the file management issue (particularly for Windows people) won't.
I've found an iOS 'workflow' that works for me - just use Gadget !, but before that I was getting very frustrated, linking things together.
After very nice experiences using ios devices I used to search for setup-clues with ONLY ios. I needed video-cutups that are audio-generated, and also possible surround-routings, though. Through the years looking for this I kinda realized, it's soo much better having different processes distributed to different devices... . I don't think I could challenge my iPads any further, with the audiosetups I'm running. So, after all, I feel that this (iPads AND Mac) is really the best possible solution for me. (Also great to realize, that I already own all I need to fulfil my wishes, no need to wait for more" professionalized" gear/Apps..., and if they DO appear, so much the better (I love choices)...)
nice wonderland we're experiencing...
You can have the same file system on a Mac, so bizarre that they've made the iPad iOS as restrictive as on a phone, particularly with the new laptop-sized Pro.
It's why they sell virus protection for Androids.
Sadly, it's how they keep the market share up, against the other Goliath; Google / Android.
Mobile market is like a shark tank. Keep moving, or die.
While some iPad Synth sound truly amazing (esp. considering their price), the arrangement workflow on iPad is still a bit fiddly. You still can't connect several synths via IAA or via Virtual Midi to a DAW at once, so you are obliged to close one synth and open another, when you want to switch.
With Ableton/Cubase/Logic you can have 20 Synths open and connected at the same time.
Have you ever had to route multiple midi channels/multiple VSTi's in a PC DAW like Reaper? A few hours of trying to do that had me screaming back to iOS. It's all so simple in MultitrackStudio. Just plug in an IAA (or AU) app and you're good to go.
I've managed 3 iPad synths simultaneously into Ableton using studiomux. IAA couldn't even do one reliably. Of course I had to keep the polyphony reasonable or the iPad crapped out, but it worked.
? What kind of IPad are you running? On my iPad Air In Cubasis I used to do long jams of around an hour recording Thor, Seekbeats, Animoog and Egoist all at once via IAA, with MidiLFOs. There were occasional bumps in the road but nothing too major I couldn't fix in post.
You probably just use Audio of those synths=>therefore it's possible. I also need midi, as I use Cubasis as a MIDI sequencer at the same as Audio Sequencer. If you are fire up Virtual Midi as output of a Cubasis midi track and fire up 3 synths, the midi track will just pick the synth you fired up last.
That's why I don't use MultiTrack DAW - it's audio only.
@cyberglad You can set a different MIDI out channel for each MIDI track in Cubasis (under Routing > set MIDI output to Virtual MIDI > set Channel). Then you can set your synths to receive MIDI on the corresponding channels.
Alternately, if you set an IAA instrument as the instrument for a MIDI track, you don't need to set anything at all, the track will only send MIDI to that instrument.
I used midi and routed it to specific synths.
Can't you just use Alt+R to show the Routing Matrix in Reaper and start clicking on the little boxes to rapidly route Midi/Audio etc?..
...
I think that psychology and culture play a key role in IOS music.
The term "user interface" and "intuitive" are far too broad terms.
Problem solving and music itself is limited by the creativity and tools of each of us. Some people can install a chandelier no problem. Problem is, the person is only 4 foot tall and they need a ladder. They don't have a ladder, so they now need to buy one. Meanwhile, a person 6'5 can install such an item without a ladder. Problem is, the 6'5 person is way too busy to install the chandelier, so he hires someone who can do it. This person has lots of ladders and plenty of other tools that make such a task simple.
Case and point, far too many people compare out and have a herd mentality these days.
With Faecbook and social media people want the "me to" feeling and group "think" that they can have a sense of belonging. Meanwhile, many of these people never take time to explore other apps that may be "unpopular" yet way better suited to them.
My point, most apps wont' be perfect for most people.
Most apps shouldn't work for most people.
We are talking about music here, not an objective outcome based dynamic.
It is subjective and relative.
My opinion is to just find a handful of apps that FEEL good when you use them. If they frustrate you, don't use them. If the sound isn't really what you like, don't use it. Just keep it moving.
I keep a about 5 apps close to the vest. They mainly work on IPad and IPhone. I use them almost daily.
Once a week, I do experimental sessions in which I spend 2 or 3 hours auditioning new apps or others I don't really use. It gives me a fresh take and adventurous spirit in at least checking out new apps.
I also REMOVE apps I don't really use. The clutter on the device is subconsciously distracting.
This is just me and thought I would share it.
Good post. For the record I am 6'5'' and (it's entirely true) there is a hallway outside of my room here with a big chandelier hanging in it. I can certainly touch it, but I wouldn't have a clue how to fix it if'n it needed fixing. No real point to my wittering (as ever), but I like your metaphor...more so though I like the idea of finding apps that you like, that turn you on....for all of that there are one or two I wouldn't give to dying man now, but took me a fair bit of turmoil and investment before I got them and I'm glad that other tall guy did the heavy-lifting so now I can enjoy the fruits of his effort
@Daath7 : Yes..good points there. Auria PRO just came out...SO much potential!
Holy crap, this thread is incredible!
@gjcurus: Forgive me , as I am a noob..Bit in comparing desk/laptop to IOS... You're working with apps within IOS vs DAWS w desk/laptop..And you didn't me tion the new Abketon "Link". Don't you think this would been easier audiobussing and/or Ableton linkingyour said apps within Auria and then saving them as " states"? (Or whatever they call them)./Just sayin'.
