    Please, extensive manual or tutorials!

The other modstep thread had a link to a decent manual i thought.

  • I recommend a manual.

  • Link and Modstep yum yum.

Modstep with running Animoog and Seline Deluxe Pro and two of its own instruments syncd with Fugue Machine, both through Audiobus with effects and recorded into Auria.

  • Now got Elastic drums Linked in on the action....speed up....speed down.....so much fun :)

From their Facebook: hit the tape deck button to record all tracks both IAA and internal synths - the tracks end up in their own studio folder !!!!!

    Also "massive Cpu improvements". Nice

Decided to bite the bullet and get ModStep. Issues so far.

    1. Crashes. Yep, though only a couple so far, and it recovered well on restart.
    2. Step Sequencer. Some of the scales are setting the isomorphic keyboard correctly, but some are gibberish. e.g. G minor sets up G,Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb,F, A minor has A#,C,D,Eb,F,G,G#. Also doesn't change the highlighted notes to the new root.
    3. Piano Roll. The pattern speed control doesn't seem to do anything I can figure out.
    4. Tempo display sometimes disappears. The button is still there though.
    5. No Undo!
    6. Piano roll scales are wrong too.
    7. Can't drag to transpose single notes. Wha? ( EDIT: Okay, I can, but only with the transpose button pressed. Ok )

Other than that, my first couple of hours with this app have been fun & productive. I look forward to more time with this one.

  • Select a speed. Then tap on a pattern to apply that speed to that pattern.

    It's a two step process.

I can help with number 4. Highlight the speed button. Select the speed multiplier you want, then press which bar button you want to change. Deselect the speed button so bar buttons don't change when selecting them for other purposes.

Sorry forgot to say that I'm using a pre release version that has Link.

    @JiggyWig,

You need time, it is simple but not that simple to know all gimmicks.

  • edited January 2016

Link was in 1.01, I was using last night I reckon! :)

  • desperate! Hehe

  • The one thing I will say about Modstep. It is worth the wait for fixes. The Dev is active and not scared to add new features quickly. Yes this may mean a few bugs need squashing while the new features are settled in.

I believe this app will become a must have app for iOS users.

  • hey everyone :)
we uploaded 1.0.2 last night and also published it as a beta to our testers, here's the change log:

    New features:

    • audiobus support: added 8 audiobus output channels
    • audioshare export and recording of all tracks (hit the new tapedeck button to record all tracks with internal instruments or IAAs, the files can be found in the /Recordings/ folder and exported to audioshare or the internal sampler via the file browser). The recordings are quantized to the current clip quantization.
    • improved reverb
    • massively lower CPU usage - especially older iPads will run a lot more tracks now.
    • iPad 1 support is back (unfortunately it's getting harder and harder to keep it that way!)
    • new Parameter on Sampler 'One Shot' that disables the ADSR completely
    • clips and scenes and arms, mutes, solos, volumes per track are now midi mappable to external controllers.
    • Tempo Up/Down and Nudge are now midi mappable.
    • CPU meter is much more accurate now and only monitors the audio-thread.
    • Tracks will now correctly remember their MIDI setup and restore it upon load.
    • lots of small enhancements

    Bugfixes:

    • IAA Effects load the proper effect now
    • IAA Effects will delete/restore fine again
    • IAAs show the proper icons in the VST when used with studiomux
    • fixed a bug that would prevent tempo changes when Ableton Link was not activated
    • fixed a bug that would cause wrong IAA fx to be loaded
    • tons of enhancements and other bugfixes
    • fixed Clip & Track Import & Export

We hope this smoothens most of the issues and fills some of the workflow gaps that you guys encountered. Thank you for all the reports & requests - sometimes it's hard to keep the needed distance to an app, and over the course of 1-2 years developing it, you get a routine of using it that does not account for other peoples use-cases or workflows. Your posts on this forum were a huge help to get a corrected view on what we need to do, add and even fix!
    Thank you! :)

  • @JiggyWig

just found and fixed the root note issue after reading your post - it will be fixed in 1.0.3 - thank you for the report!
as a workaround for the disappearing tempo you can enable Ableton Link right now, this one is fixed in 1.0.2.

To drag around notes on the piano-roll you can also use the Edit-Mode-Toggle (Pencil button up top), select one or several notes and drag them around. However, we will rethink a few of the choices we made for the piano roll. We'll try to get it a bit smoother and faster to use.

  • Cblomert,

Thank you! Waiting Modstep for so long!

This is wonderful, a very important app for iOS music and fun to use!

  • Kaikoo, thank you!
It's been a lot of joy reading up on your progress with using the app :)

  • Btw, because of you Modstep, I purchased a few more fx apps, haha, great contribution!

  • @cblomert

Thanks again for supporting iPad 1!

  • @cblomert yeah, thanks for the update. I look forward to seeing Modstep fly up the AppStore charts

Incredible list of features and fixes. I had read a short version yesterday and plotzed, AB support, something I wanted badly (and posted about ad nauseum here) then audio recording per track (something I didn't know I wanted in this application, but a way better idea than what I did want!)

Wanted to share a train of thought from last night, after thinking about the short update list posted here by @Trueyorky, that included the two (huge, for me) features above.

I started thinking about the AB implementation and thought "oh sh_t, now I'm (not just me, we're!) going to want separate AB audio channel per modstep channel...hardly any apps have it, ok @Matt_Fletcher_2000 saw a hint in a blurb, but maybe this is beyond even his Finding Power...the dev team just sent in a massive update, and I'm already ready to ask for more, I'm (not just me, we're!) never freaking satisfied...poor dev dudes dealing with picky demanding little-"

And then I see this morning, there's the 8 AB channel outs in your list. Two completely separate solves for my little workflow issues that I'd been going on, (and on) about basically the minute 1.0 went live. Now this list for 1.03? Amazing and worth the price of admission all over again. Has it really only been 11 days since 1.0?

  • Amazing update list. Thanks guys.

One thought. If clip recordings are quantised - then how about reverb, effect and release tails. They are gonna be cut off perhaps? Could we have an option to include a 5 second tail or something (like Gadget)?

I was wondering that too but then thought i could probably just set up a blank clip to accomodate it. my impression is that recording starts with playback and then will finish at the end of the current clip when you turn off recording. So i would just turn recording off when i am on a blank clip. At least that is how i would envision it works.

  • @Littlewoodg
wow! you're right, it's just 11 days! it feels like so many more

    @Matt_Fletcher_2000
linked to clip quantization only as in: it will start with the same delay as a clip you would start at the same time, and stop after the same delay as a clip stopped at the same time. The recording itself is completely independent from the clips playing or stopping. so e.G. you could start the recording with the first scene, play a bit, then stop all clips or the transport and wait till the tail has ended till you stop the recording.
