Sweet... i cant wait. Bring able to record multiple tracks on the fly will save me so much editing time after. I am getting a total audiomulch vibe with the workflow now. thanks much!!
Just playing with the beta 1.02 definite CPU improvement on iPad 3, and you can now send recording back into Sampler! As well as direct to audioshare. Still a bit buggy on a few things but we are getting there thanks to all the Modstep team.
Change log for 1.02 looks pretty exciting! I bought, used it for a day, but haven't had much time and it didn't hook me immediately. Tons of potential there, and I did really like the grid interface. AudioBus and AudioShare export would improve its usefulness as a sketch tool, as well.
90% is probably user error (me), but the issue I always have with sequencer apps like this one (and ProMidi, etc.) is just getting everything to work. Explaining to a handful of different apps which MIDI channel is going where, and making sure Background Audio is on for each...it's maddening! And it never seems to work the same way for me twice.
Great work so far! I have only had the chance for a brief play since buying the new version over using the beta. But with Link support, the built in synth and AU on the way, this is a serious piece of kit
I'm still holding out for an extensive song mode for composition like in Gadget when everything else is done....
Yep, I hear you and AU will hopefully stop all that.
Great!
if you have a moment, please send us a brief explanation of the bugs you encounter, we'll try to sort them out asap!
@cblomert Do you still have to uninstall between beta's ? I want to use Modstep for a project and do not want to lose files between updates.
Hey Andy, just seen your message here
We’ve made sure that you can just update your app to the newer version since release, so you should be able to just replace it with the beta.
If i am incorrect for whatever reason (i am pretty certain i am not!) and it crashes on startup: simply put back the store version, and it should work again.
Cool, cheers Christian, I'll give it a go, create some files, and try to go back to store version and let you know the results.
it's time to get on the audiobus
Hi Christian
Update to new beta worked fine, but going back to store version afterwards causes crash on startup. ModStep bombs out when loading, but stays there in background with white screen, when trying to bring to foreground same thing happens again.
This happened when using my own song file as well as the included demo song.
I am able to go back to store version, but only after uninstall of beta.
If in broken state (getting crash after trying to go back to store version without uninstall), then re-install of beta and everything is fine again.
No biggy, but good to be aware that going back in version is not really an option at the moment if you want to keep any files.
Thanks
Andy
don't roll back to older versions after creating new files with the newer ones! they won't be compatible because the old app knows nothing about the new format - only go back if the new one crashes after updating
edit: argh, just saw your second post - yep, glad to know everything is fine after going to newest again.
if you currently have the chance to chose between beta and retail versions, please take the beta!
PS: It's always possible to save the whole folder structure (Sampler, Synthesizer, Sessions, Autosaves etc) and then put them back after reinstalling modstep - but again be aware of moving down in versions after creating files in a newer version, it may fail - it is always possible to go up though.
did you lose anything in the process now? i hope not!
Ah, got it... that's cool.
So you're recording will be perfectly trimmed to match your master tempo... Nice... With or without tails as required (as per your suggestion).
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 @Fruitbat1919
Thanks! It does indeed work like that; I had assumed it just changed the current selection. I see that the draft manual actually says so, so I guess I need to RTFM
@Matt_Fletcher_2000
The version I downloaded last night has Link and it appears to work okay.
@Kaikoo
Indeed, there's lots to learn here, and I'm not even planning on running external hardware anytime soon!
@cblomert
Excellent news on the forthcoming fix. I have enabled Link now, not sure why I didn't turn it on right away.
Thanks for making a fascinating app! And thanks for popping in here to respond.
A few other thoughts having noodled along a while longer.
Template Editor
1. I can't figure out how to copy/import/export chord settings (or the pads/cc's), or load/save them individually (if you can). The manual is unclear on this. Could still be user error on my part, but it looks like exporting a chord set doesn't. It doesn't show in the browser, the import button is inactive and the iTunes folders show no evidence of an export. Guidance appreciated!
2. It would be "nice to have" some preset chord sets available, or a chord browser/helper when setting up.
3. The template/preset browser windows are strongly favouring dragging over scrolling, I find it very hard to get them to scroll rather than drag (especially the smaller windows).
Piano Roll.
1. No snapping on dragging is weirding me out. I'm not used to such free-form activity! I've never used a piano editor that doesn't snap to a grid, even if only as a default.
OT: Cream Mobile
1. Not having much luck getting this routed right, it's always using the MIDI channel number that corresponds to the track no matter what I set. This is probably user error. I will dig deeper.
2. What it's doing to the notes is quite cool though.
3. Cream is proving quite crashy. Maybe I should have got StepPolyArp after all...
Yep - I hear you too!
Tips:
Or give up and go create something in Gadget or MTS (with the iSEM AU) - that is always a tempting option when I get too tired of hooking things together
I didn't change or save the files just opened and closed modstep, I think it is auto save that updated the file, it is saving every second.
EDIT: Or is it that the display is updating every second, so the secs increment ? If this were a date and time instead, you would more easily be able to go back to a file from before updating if needed as there would be no maths involved in deciding which file to use
Can we have an option to not auto load the previous session, then you would be able to start the app and go back to a previous version of the file for cases where the more recent file is causing a failure on startup ? On that subject, both this and the option for not auto loading IAA would be better placed in the iOS settings pages so they could be changed before starting the app as these options would most likely be used when experiencing a startup issue.
No nothing lost, I was testing before committing to starting the project.
I am on the beta and will be starting in earnest at the weekend
How do I save the folder structures ? Through iTunes ? Dropbox would be good for this for those of us who do not have easy access to an iTunes loaded PC.
Deleting all the tracks seems to make it pretty unstable. Tends to crash shortly after.
This is pretty obvious.
Not really. Try it, delete all the tracks, then add some new ones back in, and watch it fail shortly afterwards anyway. Not something I'd expect to do often, but points clearly to some code that needs hardening.
ModStep is working great for me so far. Only two things really bug me at the moment, one which is not a feature yet.
UNDO! At the moment I am deleting a pattern and starting over each time. Having an undo would be great.
Quantization Values. It seems when I quantize my midi recordings it's not set to the values I record. How do we set quantize for 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 etc? If I play 16th notes, sometimes quantize applies quarter notes or something. It's strange. Perhaps I'm not doing something right. I'm used to sequencers allowing me to set the Quantize value.
Looking forward to future updates.
UPDATE: I think Quantizing work fine right now. It must be me not catching the 1 when I'm playing the notes in with a remote keyboard. I still don't know how quantization works under the hood with modstep, but I do think it's working ok the more I get used to the app. Thanks.
new update coming
volume sliders/mute/solo.. all midi mappable
and tempo will be midi mappable as well!! this + link is the ultimate win
http://modstep.net/coming-up-modstep-1-0-2-update/
scenes and clips are midi mappable too
Holy shit
Might be time to buy that Launchpad I've had my eye on for a couple of years but not too the plunge as it would have probably just collected dust !
Can @Launchpadforios or anyone else running the beta confirm if Launchpad hardware works with ModStep ?
We should have lots of fun with this.
Is there a way of importing sounds from Audioshare to the Sampler?. if not please add this @cblomert
+a lot
I don't think there is at the moment. To import audio wav files I have to use iTunes instead. You can add Audioshare as an instrument on a track, but I don't think you can copy past anything right now.
Also, I can't seem to find a way to import midi clips. If I press and hold a clip in session view, I get a midi import/export menu, but this doesn't allow midi clips to import from the root area in iTunes. I can drag and drop midi files, but they don't show up in ModStep. Hmm.
I have a Beatstep Pro and the velocity sensitive pads work super nice with this. The drums mapped nicely too. I am waiting for 1.0.2 to fix a couple crashes and make it more dependable. It really is a killer sample player if it would stay open.
Now you're talking
I hope it's fixed and updated soon
