  • Well this is an easy route to see. The little velocity button? Put a pitch button that works the same next to it. We can then pitch the slices up and down by semitones or, God willing, scalar degrees within a chosen scale. BOOM, now it's serious business. You all know you want it!

    I'll take it!

  • I just had a blast with this over my lunch break, made a nice little rnb organchord progression with a sexy guitar motif on top. Lot of fun. As for the future, dare I say adjustable start and end markers for the hits? Ala a certain gadget? Anywho, great job @Launchpadforios

  • It's wonderful ... thanks devs.

But I can't understand why the begining of the loop is not going at the end when you slip left (and vice versa)... Currently it makes a break at the end or beginning of the loop when you resynch it... too bad for me.

Shit Nathan. Sorry to hear that.

Thanks. Scuttle was 'only' a budgie, but a disabled bird who had been unable to fly for most of his life, yet didn't let that hold him back. A right little character.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm loving the new Blocs Wave features. It's great to have a developer who develops and listens to their customers.

    Nathan,
My thoughts are with you and everyone who knew and loved Scuttle. I am so sorry.

  • @Launchpadforios Well done LAUNCHTEAM! I have (had) it in my mind that 'loop' apps were about the IAPs and distinct from other more 'original' or 'creative' endeavors. This development completely blows that out of my tea cup. Yes, there'll be more feature requests, but you have opened open the box here...

  • @Launchpadforios , thanks for such an update, the App could only get better.

  • Working with multiple iPads, loading this up with Patterning sure is amazing.

I really want to bank my own samples in this thing. Playing with premade loops is ok, but I'd like to have my own loops locked and loaded across the whole app (not just loaded into one song and only easily accessible there.)

It's really nicer than I thought it could be. If features keep popping up like this slicer, I'll be thrilled. Since I wasn't a fan of Launchpad's usefullness in my setup, it was a leap to decide to buy into this. If the effects and tricks from Launchpad appear here as IAPs, I'm not even hesitating to add them.

Hope to see a user sample screen soon.

    Thanks Blocs team!

Pretty much my sentiments entirely...interested to see how far they're going to take it.

  • +1 for the user sample bank. Please! I like the app but actually rarely use it...

I had noticed that Novation advertises this app as having "Real-time Stretch Engine - Change tempo at any time" and after seeing this update, it almost made me say "hats off to Novation for creating what appears to be the first ever iOS app to combine both non-destructive slicing and realtime timestretching"....

but then I finally got the app and tried it out and now see that it actually doesn't even timestretch! It only "stretches" loops by doing realtime pitchshifting of loops in sync to the tempo (Is this how Launchpad app handles audio loops too?). So what Blocs Wave does in terms of "stretching" loops is basically equivalent to only having Ableton's Re-pitch warp mode (or how Renoise handles tempo-synced loops by pitching). I was hoping that it can actually do timestretching of loops and not just pitchshifting, like Ableton's new Simpler can. I do like how this app is implemented overall but that little detail is a bit disappointing... Unless I'm missing something?

Good call. While the app continues to improve, it's still not an Ableton replacement in regards to time stretching

Hi @shortbus, just to confirm you are not actually correct here.

When Ableton is in Re-pitch mode, changing tempo, actually 'changes' the pitch of loops. This is certainly not the case in blocs wave.

To to be extra clear, Blocs Wave will time stretch audio & loops, AND adjust pitch accordingly when you change tempo. This is equivilant to all of Abletons modes EXCEPT re-pitch.

Or course, the primary difference between us and the mightly ableton, is that Ableton Live has the concept of warp markers. There are others, but this is the main difference.

Do let me know if I understood your question correctly.

  • The only problem I've found is that Blocs is just too damn addictive and fun :p

  • Bloody hell.

This is now amazing with the slicer.

It's like a much easier to use Egotist with Link.

Half an hour playing with it has made me think of a completely new way of making tracks.

Record in or import in pretty much any nice sounding sound source and then slice and tap your way to some really nice sounding unique loops. Then I guess I'd take these out and into Gadget to make my track.

One big difference between this and Abu Dhabi is that Blocks doesn't play the whole slice as a one shot, it's gated. Which is really nice.

I agree. its bloody amazing. pretty much the only thing i wish they would add was the ability to trigger and disable the pads via midi. if that was added in i could pretty much supplement modstep in composing tracks without ever needed a DAW

  • It's so good.

Once I figured out the zoom on the slicer things got a lot more fun.

The way the loop mode works is also fantastic. You can set a loop range and then move it around, shorten it etc. It's glitch-tastic but all quantised.

I'm finding I prefer this to Samplr - in terms of the way I'll use it. Because you can do similar things and the sync with other apps plus the ease of exporting apps is amazing.

For live jamming (or sketching) it is also superb.

You could do a pretty great live set with this at the centre I'd have thought.

Ok, so I guess technically it's not like Ableton's Re-pitch warp mode but that wasn't really the point and I don't care about things like warp markers either. The point I wanted to make is that Blocs Wave cannot do what all the other warp modes in Ableton Live lets you do: audio loops stretching to fit the tempo while preserving the pitch.

As far as I can tell, Blocs Wave does not have timestretch as some people were led to believe so from the "Real-time Stretch Engine" line in the app description. From my brief play with it, Blocs Wave only "stretches" loops in sync to tempo by pitching the sample up and down accordingly. This is nothing new as that's how almost all other iOS apps so far that implemented tempo synced loops have done it, except for Loopy HD and LP-5 which seem unique among iOS apps for having realtime timestretch that does preserve the pitch when changing tempo.

But Loopy HD and LP-5 don't do slicing. So here's a feature request: Please make iOS history by becoming the first ever iOS app to combine both non-destructive slicing and realtime timestretching.

How's the Abelton app? Haven't taken a look at that one yet....

  • Sorry I doubted you guys... Hats off to Novation for creating what appears to be the first ever iOS app to combine both non-destructive slicing and realtime timestretching!!!

there is no Ableton app, Ableton Live is a desktop DAW

Yeah, thanks mr. Got it but still haven't quite found anything that would make me want to replace Samplr. Having said that I've only played with it for 10 mins so who knows. I'm hoping Novation will bring more wave manipulation modes.

...and £3.99 didn't really blow a hole in my pocket,

  • I wish there will be some FX per tracks like a low pass filter and a bpm delay, (with automation) one day :)

I like the random mode, but a "real time" random ( that keep going as long as you tick the random box would be nice too)

Anyway, I already like that app a lot, it's really good to get you started when you're not that inspired, thanks!

  • Is there a metronome available for slice pad record mode?

So about this: you mean to zoom in to get smaller slices?
