Just tested it with midi out to Lorentz (also updated and brilliant) and Moog 15 and it worked like a dream - also set it to use the pitch control which turns Patterning into a fully fledged midi sequencer . And of course you can route the built in drum tracks into separate channels in aum ...
This is one heck of an update - absolutely wonderful
good update. What I would like is an expanded rotate function. I found that rotating a track is an interesting effect in a pattern, but it is a bit difficult to manually 'play' with rotation. You can set auto-rotate to -1 or -2 to advance the track, then after one pattern length set auto-rotate back to 0, to keep the rotated track at its new position. This works well as long as the pattern is running. When you stop, each rotated track goes back to its former position.
I believe it would be better if there was a manual-rotate function next to the auto-rotate function.
Of course I could pre-program the rotated versions of my patterns and use the song mode, but this would involve more planning and work, and sometimes also less flexibility. I like to play 'live', with a minimum of pre-programmed stuff. Or in other words, program stuff on the fly. Live programming-editing, something like that.
Patterning is an integral part of my studio. It is also the best sequencer for translating 'morphing' polyrhythms from the recently released software XronoMorph (http://www.dynamictonality.com/xronomorph.htm). Actually it is this very interesting mathematical rotation morphing feature (subtle to abrupt rotations of single or multiple tracks) of XronoMorph which supports my feature request even more.
Where is the sample preview? Was expecting a sound when tapping or double tapping on sample part circle column at left of pattern page. This is what I was hoping for.
Edit: ok I see the preview now after enabling the audio icon. Still hoping for what I described.
I own the app and love it, especially its innovative, friendly interface. The only remark I put upon it is the way to choose the drumkits, w/o preview and with those fancy names, but this is a minor prob
Was just about to post a request for a list mode of drum kits with smaller versions of the icons to the left of the name. Annoying looking through the large icons as is. Sorry but it's true.
My 3 requests would be
1. A list mode for drum kits
2. Sample sound on first or second tap of circle buttons on pattern page
3. A repeat, loop roll effect on the fx page. Maybe toggle between display of delay and loop roll with 2 tabs at top of this section, "Delay" and "Drum Roll" for example.
Thank you so much, my developer. I have played 3 hours or so on the new version. Very very nice, again on new features.
This is now a 1- 64 steps rotating 1-8 multi track channel sequencers. Can command patterns timeline to sync other synthesizers make a complete song.
Hehe, can make a Gadget song only on Patterning. Worthy every penny on this discount price for new buyers.
So nice to export each track as its own independant length loop.
I've given myself an app buying ban for a month or two (money stuff) , so updates like this are so welcome . The update has made it feel like a brand new app , I'm going to be driving a few synths with this tonight and recording the resulting racket lol
I may have come across a bug in the new version. In the song page, I managed to make a pattern be muted in the timeline and then I couldn't figure out how to unmute it. But I didn't do anything to mute it! It was just the same pattern posted twice in a row, with the second incarnation 'Rotation reset'. Then when I played the timeline, these 2 patterns produced no sound. As there is no pattern muting tool in the timeline and the actual pattern sounded just fine on its own when not in the timeline, I have no idea what happened. Hence I think it's a bug but I can't replicate it! These 2 incarnations of the pattern were coloured differently in the timeline from the others, but every pattern does seem to have its own colour so I don't think that's linked.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Feature request: The ability to directly select a point in the timeline for pattern insertion. It doesn't seem like you can do that at the moment. You can't scrub the playhead along the timeline to pick an insertion point - indeed, there is no playhead before the timeline starts playing. I would also like to be able to zoom the timeline out to see a whole song, rather than have to use two fingers to move left and right.
This is such a big deal. Will now be able to record a drum loop into multitrackstudio into eight different channels at the same time! So much easier to mix and master a whole drum kit's individual parts! Audiobus state saving makes setup of multiple songs a breeze! Eff yeah!
Thank you @benkamen
sigh. That does look purdy doesnt it? Now I can skip through kits and have it all nice and mixable in PC Dawland... There's something in my eye..
All sunk up super tight on an iPad mini no less. sigh. Mr. Kerns, thank you!
Wow!
That is pretty fantastic. Let me say that I thought Patterning was too gimmicky at first, but I was wrong. It's easy to jump right in AND it reveals a wealth of options upon further investigation. Fantastic.
Now will someone show me how this works in ModStep? Or multiple midi tracks in Cubasis?
So how is it working out for sequencing other apps? Can you guys now make melodic content into polyrythms with synth apps? I tried it before the update with mixed success, and am at work wishing I could use patterning!
Yeah , if you check the pitch option in the MIDI channel settings you can create melodic sequences
Major update , I'm going to have some fun with this tonight
OK @benkamen
If you can't make a testimonial/unsolicited commercial out of the above........
even polyphonic stuff?
Basically you can assign each "track" to a note. So if you send all 8 notes to a single synth you're going to get polyphonic rhythms specially if each "track" has a different number of steps and speed.
anyone able to get velocity from patterning midi out? all i seem to be able to get is full intensity or off...
I was done for now. Really, I'm serious this time... got a basic old school sequencer (Genome) and an app that helps, teaches, and suggests choices for proper chord progression (Suggester unlocked) and was going to focus more on learning instead of app shopping, tweaking & ultimately buying.
Then...
I saw Patterning went on sale for 50% off. Another respected user called me out and told me to stop buying every freaking app that goes on sale and get my focus back on sound/music.
He was right of course, and I was going to easily be able to resist since I already have plenty of drum machine apps that I barely know how to use.
But everyone raves about this app so much and John over at The Music App Blog raves about it constantly, so I caved one more time and grabbed this last night.
My first impression was OMG!
Then this update was queued up this morning so I messed around connecting up various synths, trying out the new stuff just since last night and now...
OMFG!!!
Anyone on the fence with only $5 left in their app budget for the next month or so, this one is a no-brainer fo' shizzle.
Yep , always been my go to drum app ( despite having HUNDREDS of them ) because it's quick and easy to make a beat ( though a step sequencer option would be nice ) , there's loads of great kits , and I don't have sound or reliability issues like the others . It just works , and now it's got all these new shiny things , that will make me shelve a lot if MIDI apps too ( I'm looking at you , Auxy... )
No brainer fo sho! Best (by far) drum app imho!
I'm surprised after all the hype in this forum that anyone with a login here has not yet purchased Patterning. As @carol says, it is a go to drum app. I also put everything else away after purchasing Patterning when it first came out and folks went nuts for it... it is easy to see why and I have learned so much about straight and polyrhythms as a result. I can't wait to get home to play with the updated app!
i love how updates can spur you to revisit an app or aspects of an app.
Im having a blast sending alternate midi channels repitched to Animoog and Model 15!
the graphics are causing an occasional glitch on Air2 but it is stable as I type this..
(cmon Apple get it together..us Musos are always left out on the (cutting) edge..
paradoxically , I wouldnt want to be anywhere else....)
Now to map my controller to Patterning as well.
its 6 am and Ive just made 3 tangerine dream tribute albums....
Sample folders? Kicks/hihats/snares etc?
I love old TD I want to hear!
Lol +1
