Anyone tried the Korg NanoKey Studio?

  • BTW, if anyone is looking for a bag for the NanoKey, in addition to the one recommended by @Seangarland, this one works well. It is "waterproof" neoprene and has padding. But what sold me on it is the external pocket, which is big enough for cables, chargers, hubs, etc. Its a little too roomy in height, but does the job.

  • Did any of you guys check out the hidden retro game (Breakout) in the new Kamata gadget? You long press the 'page select' button.

What's cool is that the Nanokey's x/y pad not only works as a controller for the game, but since you can draw waveforms with x/y pad it's also a custom level designer. Not that big of a deal, but a funny odd little diversion nonetheless.

  • How do you control the game just on an iPad? I couldn't figure out how to move left or right!

turn the value knob above the page select button lets you move left and right -- quite fiddley affair though

I think this is broken on an iphone in portrait mode. Because that's what I tried. But never mind :).

  • Where can we buy it ? I can't find it in France even on internet ,it' s out of stock :'( :'(

I think the NanoKey Studio is just coming to Europe these days, so out of stock probably should read not yet in stock

  • I've got my Nanokey Studio this week and I'm liking it so far: Immediate joy and jamming with Gadget. I wonder though if there is a way to assign specific chords to the chord pads or the white keys in Easy Scale mode?

Not sure if this answers your question, but the guy in this vid is doing some clever stuff with a scale/chord combination:

  • You can't change the chords in the Chord pads and easy scale modes. You can assign up to 4 notes to each pad in regular mode though. You have to use the PC or Mac based editor program to do this.

    Ah, found it, thank you!

  • Is anyone using this with Logic or Mainstage?

I just got it. Like it, but don't have much experience with, or anything else to compare to. My first.

Getting it working in Logic was pretty straight forward, but I've only got the keys, pads, and x/y working. Buttons work too, but I haven't figured out how to either use a Korg nanoKey map to get the knobs working. Or, to assign function manually.

  • Another thing I can't figure out: I've programmed some chords using the editor, but I can't change scenes when I use Gadget. Changing scenes works fine with other apps though... Is it me?

Have you tried adding and mapping it via Logic? You should be able to do this for each instrument.

I tried, but it doesn't show the nanoKey studio in the choices. It only shows a Korg microkontrol and a Korg Kontrol49. The icons for either of those look like different Korg products. And yes, I installed the recommended drivers that are supposed to cover the nanoKey studio, as per the Korg support page.

It's likely that I'm simply not doing something right. I scannned for new devices and the nanoKey doesn't show up. I'm not an expert with Logic though. I was attempting to do this via control surfaces/setup/new/scan all models but the nanokey is not found.

The only way it works at all is if I use the Audio/Midi OSX app, and connect the bluetooth device. The nanoKey shows up there. Though, as I stated, this ONLY gives me the use of the keys/pads/xy, no control of knobs.

    Bummer.

I'll check with my mate, he says he's got it working with Logic

Cool. If he's got it working, including the knobs, please ask him how he did it. I've posted the same question here on the forum, but have yet to get a reply. thx :)

The purple sleeve I recommended is way better than the black one @Seangarland ended up buying.

It also holds my Nanokey studio. 13.3 seems pretty long.

  • Just texted him, he's not sure now...thinks they were working in Mainstage, but is going to check later.

He's just checked and the knobs aren't working. He's going to try setting them up with the editor, so I'll let you know how he gets on.

To get NanoKEY studio to work with Mac OSX it best NOT to use the crappy Korg Bluetooth midi connect app from the Mac App Store. Instead just open Audio/Midi in the utility folder and select the Bluetooth midi there. I found that out myself through trial and error.

  • @skiphunt, @MonzoPro: you can easily setup any midicontrols inside Logic by "learning commands" (not sure, if the naming is right, but you get there via SHIFT ALT K). Click the button/fader/whatever, click LEARN (button on bottom left in window), then wiggle control.
Should be easily done... . Good luck, cheers, twobeers

I'm not home to try, but if that works as easy as that, gracias!!! :)

  • @skiphunt: if its more complicated, fell free to ask, when I'm home, I'll try to go through it with you... . (You should see first, if there's midi communication going on, Logic shows you at top, middle). It's easier, though, when I'm in front of Logic myself, which I ain't right now...

My mate hasn't had any luck yet, but I saw a video of someone setting up the Akai that way, so it should be pretty straightforward. I'd be interested to know how you get on, and I can pass on the info to my mate. Also want to confirm this for myself, as I'm interested in getting one too.

Just got home and tried @animal 's suggestion. Works perfect, easy and straight forward. Actually, much preferred to a defined map set from Korg. This way you can easily just set it up custom for the module you're working with.

    Thanks @animal !!! :)

If you want to be able to change scenes then you need to go to the "other" settings in Gadget and turn off NanoKey Studio Native Mode. Of course then you turn off the built in integration, but are then free to assign controls as you like.

  • O.K. Thanks again @wim!

  • @skiphunt: you're welcome, glad it works for you. Keep it up and enjoy.
