I've got my Nanokey Studio this week and I'm liking it so far: Immediate joy and jamming with Gadget. I wonder though if there is a way to assign specific chords to the chord pads or the white keys in Easy Scale mode?

Not sure if this answers your question, but the guy in this vid is doing some clever stuff with a scale/chord combination:

Thanks for this Mister. I am only recently on board with this NanoKey thingie, but I like it considerably, find the BT excellent and love being able to throw it in the bag and haul it around the world etc.

You threw me there a bit Boss, with this old quote.

I didn't get one in the end, a mate bought the two controllers and I wasn't that fussed with the look and feel of them. Pricey, too.

I'm going off my little Microkey as well, finding it too small. If the finances pick up next year I'm going to look at a keyboard with a few more keys, and maybe some pads look, but don't think I could cope with the Nano 'button' style.

I hear you. I'm enjoying this thing, especially as a quick/easy travel item (whether here in Spain or just wandering down to the coffee shop etc). Very good in Gadget, which I don't use much, but find myself fiddling with because of the Nanokey, which makes it worth my while...

I can see how it works for some - if I had your globetrotting cafe culture lifestyle (and more importantly, your money) and used Gadget more then it'd definitely be a thing. For me though I need a (just right) medium sized controller for home use - the Microkey is too wee, and my old Edirol is hit and miss due to its abandoned drivers. And I'm guessing if I whipped out the Nanokey at a cafe here, the farmers would have me tied to a ducking stool within minutes.

I have more of a hospital-bedside-change-my-mother's-diaper-for-eight-hours-a-day lifestyle at the moment, but I get your generally sardonic drift.... :)

Ah ok, that's painted a different picture to the one I had in my head, sorry Boss, all the best to you and yours.

No worries Mister. Us Champagne Charlies can always do with a little humility and life most certainly provides it...

We've looking at a similar scenario with Mrs Monzo's mother at the moment. Though being Vin de Tesco Dave's, it'll be Kidderminster rather than Spain.

  • Appreciate that Wim. Cheers

  • This is really cool and powerful controller for any platform. I was wondering is there any remote MIDI script for Ableton Live. Maybe not for KEYs but for KONTROL?

  • I feel we have been so misled by Korg!

The bundled software contains an Ableton Live discount coupon and Reason Limited.
This would suggest the NanoKey Studio has been designed to work flawlessly with both Ableton Live and Reason!

By now, everybody knows this is far from true, since Reason does not recognize it at all and Ableton recognize only the keyboard and the rotary must be remapped for every single instrument in every single track and song.

The functionality offered with Korg Gadget is not available for 3th party applications. And claiming this is an "all-in-one" is a plain lie.

Today I bought the Korg iMono/Poly synth for iPad and found out the NanoKey Studio is again not supported.

In Europe this misleading of consumers is a legal offense and I think it is time we take a stand and sue this evil corporation!

did you connect it to your computer and map the controls to what you want with the scenes? you have 8 scenes that you can access whenever you want to connect it, i have it set up for my 8 most used situations. read the manual.

I did read the manual, but I might have overlooked something.
Would you be so kind to explain me how to setup it in Reason and Ableton Live, so I can fix it once and forever?

  • You don't set it up in ableton, you set it up in the korg software and set up scenes where x knob transmits x cc. This changes per synth/program so i'll go through the ruismaker manual and create one scene for that. Check what tou want to control in ableton and find the cc's.

OK, it is clear this vpich has no clue and is mixing up various setups and might not ever seen how other hardware is behaving in Ableton Live and Reason FOR WINDOWS PC!

    • Ruismaker is a brand by Bram Bos who makes very nice apps for the iPad. I have no issues with my iPad setup!
    • I know how to setup scenes and set CC in the KORG KONTROL Editor!
    • I, and other users too, want to use the Korg NanoKey Studio as a control surface in Ableton Live and or Reason. These are DAW for Windows PC!
    • When in Ableton Live and plug in a Novation Impulse 49, Yamaha KX25 or M-Audio Ozone, the rotary knobs are mapped automatically to the most obvious parameters that are active! Very nice!
    • When I plug in the NanoKey Studio there is no way to select the device, because it is not in the "Natively-Supported Control Surfaces" list. This means we have to mess with UserConfiguration.txt files or even some python scripts to make it right.

I think other users have the right to know the problems with this gear, for it is NOT supported by the BUNDLED SOFTWARE.

Oh i see. You wanted an automap controller and you didn't research properly before buying. The keys themselves work and you can assign scenes. You didn't mention automap in your first post. Good luck suing korg. :D

  • If I'm not mistaken, automap configurations are usually created by the DAW maker and bundled with maintenance updates. Occasionally there will be a script offered for download on the peripheral maker's website but as far as I know, your issue is with Propellerheads and Ableton, not Korg. They would also have control over the bundled software.

Case in point: Reason finally offered automap support for the MPK Mini months after the MPK Mini Mkii came out. Akai set the keyboards up with different default controls, too, so the auto map is useless on the newer keyboard.

  • I just got one off eBay. I have mixed feelings:

Wireless operation. It is surprisingly fast but low buffer is required to compensate. I found 128 frames ok but I can definitely feel the latency. I found some notes get lost when playing fast and wonder whether it's just my unit though.

Wired operation. Powered hub required = bummer. I’ve tried passive hub trick that works with mpk mini mk 2 but no luck here.

Midi channels can be changed on the fly via the 8 scenes which I find sufficient. It’s quick and reliable.

Now for the best feature! Every control can transmit on a separate midi channel. Wickedness!

I don’t mind the mini button keys, they’re quirky but get the job done albeit not recommended for use while the rest of the family is watching Netflix in the same room or you'll sound like a mad typist. Definitely a sound I want to sample at some point though ;)

Overall I like it. One new thing that bugs me is if you have the internal clock enabled, it floods the iPad with midi clock messages as soon as you plug it in. I wish there was an onboard way to switch the clock settings. And the channel. Especially the channel!

Scenes don’t do it for me for channel switching. I have too many scene specific mappings to waste any just to change the midi channel. But, I manage that using mfxStrip to do channel changes when needed, so I can live with it.

I got a feeling my gift from Sensel Claus will relegate this one on the shelf after Dec. 25 tho.

Tip: rechargeable batteries are the way to go with this one. I keep two sets in the bag, and as soon as I pop one set out, they go straight to the charger, then back into the bag when they’re done cooking.

You need to tell the device which kind of batteries you’re using through the control app.

  • I'm finding weird stuff happening with pads and keys velocity. They don't seem to trigger very quiet sounds and the quietest sound is about 50% volume. I've tried to change some of the global settings but no luck. Launchkey mini mk3 triggers fine with the same software (drambo).
