Audio apps you would like to buy but think are too expensive (overpriced apps)
I know this is something personal. Some people have just a lot of money too burn and buy easy others have a more critical approach when they buy a new audio apps. But for me some apps that I would like to buy are just too expensive just to try, even if they have lyrical reviews. For me the price point of an app is becoming more and more important also because quite a lot apps I bought in the past seemed just a waste of money. Especially when apps are over a few dollars I already start holding back on instant buying. Probably more of you know this feeling. Below is a list of some apps I would like to buy but at the moment I think they are too expensive, also I will give the price point for the app that would be an instant buy for me. To be clear this is by no means meant to be mocking over App prices. But more about trying to get a discussion going on what's an app worth . This is of course still something personal, although I think there's something that could establish something of a value for an app, especially when you look at audio app prices in general. Curious what you think of my list and also I'm curious if there are others with similar lists or ideas of holding of buying because of the price.
AUM currently $18.99 instant by for 6.99
Modstep currently $19.99 instant by for 6.99
MIDI Designer Pro 2 $24,99 instant by for 6.99
Egoist $29,99 instant by for 9.99
To end with some sweet spot examples (perfect price point) I bought audiobus en loopy hd in the past for a few dollars, Patterning for $7.99) and Sector for $5.99

Sounds like a perfectly safe idea for a thread to me.
A can of worms may well be (re) opened here ...
Too expensive?? They aren't overpriced...Apple hardware is massive overpriced!
Pro quality equipment, worth 10x these prices (the original price, not speculative).
Oh come on, we just drove off the top neoliberal propagandist here, I need to rest up before the next conflagration.
Oh dear.. Politics in an already provocative thread.. petrol on the fire?
I'm sorry but I go out of my head when The Market is depicted as a sentient being, I'll sit this thread out for the good of the community
Be careful you may arouse the Borg Collective.
It all depends...
I'm a recovering App-o-Holic and mostly a nerdy 'hobbyist' with too many apps already...
I try to talk myself into that it's more 'healthy' to get an app than buy snacks and beverages for the same amount
I thought I'd use apps like ModStep more but all I do is end up using Cubasis and Gadget with some AUs and selected 'classic' apps I already own of which some when mentioned(like Snvx) cause havoc...
I can probably never motivate myself to get AuriaPro with all the IAPs regardlesss of discount levels.
It's not about the money as I've spent similar amount of cash in total on IAPs for Gadget, Module, Cubasis, Animoog to name just a few. And based on the screenshots AP will be a total nightmare to use with all the tiny icons and blahahaaa... It may have the features but it would just be taking space on my iPad that can be used for other things.
Some upcoming updates will definitely be on my purchase list regardless of price-point...
I know there will be a fight. But name me one product category where the consumer regularly argues for higher prices. It's a little weird that people suggest that it's somehow insulting to developers to suggest that their prices are too high.
Egoist, comparable to other products available, is too expensive. Modstep I think can charge its slight premium — again, relative to what else is available — because it is unique. Although it is not remotely "pro-quality equipment." "Pro quality" has to work all the time.
I think Animoog is amazing, but it gives me a sour taste to have to pay an extra $5 for midi out. Worth it? Definitely, but still a sour taste.
Pass, although Brexit........
Egoist I agree n price (as with all Sugar Byes software, in fact).
Modstep as a 'consumer' bit of kit for running as an all in one music station is sub par (crashes etc.), but it's functionality when combined with Audiobus and AUM is on what I would consider the lower rungs of the 'professional' ladder. It's feature set is professional and it works well enough and reliably enough to use live in professional situations. It's just a b*stard to prepare for those situations (endless enigma of MIDI notes not sounding and redoing work constantly because of it's lack of an undo function). Still, it's on the ladder and is clawing it's way up. For pro live work, I consider it essential software and I'm happy to support it for the climb. Would have paid more for it and been satisfied.
The biggest complainers must have lived their whole musical lives in iOS, I don't see how you can come from the desktop software scene and ever feel ripped off on iOS.
How about we don't have a fight. If this thread escalates please sent me a PM and I'll close it.
Exactly. You want app developers to be able to make a living or at least enough money to warrant working on the apps you like. If you pay more, you're ensuring that. If you only purchase apps when they're on sale or ask for lower prices you're hurting yourself over time as quality will go down and apps will be abandoned.
I agree, and the learning curves that go with that expensive desktop software..
Just buy AUM and don't bother with the rest of that list, you'll save money right there. (That's what I did anyway).
With you there.
As for apps, perhaps it would be more diplomatic to say there are some apps that would encourage me more, were they more competitively priced.
Absolutely every consumer product had a price we, as individuals, are willing to pay. Regardless of development costs, comparative pricing, or quality. If Apple doubled all thier prices, some would pay, but many would not. Clearly, developers of the more expensive apps are happy with whatever profit they make, Egoist among them.
AUM, Modstep and Egoist are totally worthy of those price tags but I'd say go for Lemur over midi designer pro. They've all been on sale before so I'm sure they will again.
I feel devs like Sugarbytes are doing us a huge favor by bringing these apps to iOS at an immediate $100 discount (regular retail for Egoist VST: $129.00), it's not something that I expect to last much longer.
I'd happily pay their asking prices for the latest connectivity (AU+Link). I bought WOW already and I agree they are professional quality tools, but they're too behind the times at the minute for me to consider them genuinely usable in a workflow of today (WOW is of course, but I couldn't use the others). I think a premium price should deliver an up to date feature set.
CMI Pro is 40 dollars. But i realize it's more of a collectors item.
Sometimes I wish I could be psychic. How do you know, by vision, or ... ?
Ethical-consumerist/Fair-Trade-like produced goods.
Yepp and also one of the 'cheapest' ways to gain access to the original classic Fairlight samples without 're-sampling/conversion'. That alone made it worth it for me
I did get the 10 dollar version to be fair and have enjoyed that so far. I just can't justify it to myself right now.
I like ice cream. When I have extra money I buy it and enjoy it. It doesn't really matter if I think ice cream should cost less. I can buy lower quality ice cream ... And receive lower level of enjoyment...
or I can save up for a delicious scoop from my favorite creamery. = fulljoy
Apps are the same really.
a kiss on the lips, an inch on the hips
And my main point:
the hobby of eating ice cream would lose some of its charm if I worried about thinking that the ice cream shops weren't charging appropriate prices.
[not trying to start anything here... In fact I think I'll go pump Bebot thru AUFX: Push for a while. yay! See ya]
Should I start a thread for apps you've bought and thought were underpriced? A fairly long list for me, not that I was complaining at the time.
Every time I see a major iOS music app on sale, it tells me the platform is weaker than I'd like. Some apps really do fill (or try to fill) an important function in music-making that's otherwise lacking on iOS, and I don't think a developer should ever have to discount already underpriced apps. That has to inhibit development, and a likely reason why we don't see better stability and more features we want. I think there are two basic markets out there. Those who collect inexpensive apps, who support quantity, and those who would pay more for more quality. If you want more quality, the better developers need to profit from their work.
