    I didn't, and that's on me.

That said, it's a completely inexplicable and unbelievable pricing model. Totally absurd.I guess I'll just rock the iPhone version 2X on my iPad.

I'm not buying this today, but what makes this inexplicable and unbelievable as regards pricing? I sense some piling on here (generally, not specifically you) and my terribly English sense of humour (and fairness) starts to wonder how it got to the point that our friends at Retronyms are somehow becoming the underdog as well as the pantomime villain :)

Yeah, I agree with the piling on. I know that Mobius Lab was hailed as a miracle, but virtually no one knew quite what the hell it was for and still the consensus was that it was worth far more than the $12.99 being charged. (I am actually surprised I haven't heard much about that app since its release, actually.) This does a very specific thing, has EXCELLENT tutorials and documentation. Shit, man, I'd pay an extra $10 for modstep if it had these kind of clear video tutorials.

Just a little strange, but I guess the old-timers here are rightfully wary of Retronyms?

But — we're all burying the lead here — the iPhone app is free! All I'd want it for is to grab old calypso samples from Spotify anyway.

I bought an MPC Element on the strength of Retronyms promises for iMPC Pro, and it's been one heartache after the other with that ****'ing app.

    So excuuussssseee..... a-Meeeee!!

  • I'm missing something because iPad version is 611 Mb and iPhone only 78.3.

Yes, 5 sound packs against 1 but...i's a huge difference.

  • Is there a manual anywhere for this app? How does it compare with other similar apps (Remix Live, LP-5, etc)? Thanks!

  • there is no similar app, it's a pretty dope app for what it does.... anybody dumping on this but applauding apps with no panning is eating cereal backwards.

No iPhone, weak. Novation blocs, launchpad, Mixvibes Remixlive and cross dj all have iPhone version. Retronyns, step yo game up

EDIT: whoops! Just saw the second link. Ok, lemme check this out

it does have an iPhone version, that has all of the features, and is free, and has panning

Remixlive is a great app, I'd think they make a great combo..... hook has sample slicing the others don't.

  • Thanks for posting the link to the free iphone version. $12 saved, would have been an expensive mistake.

  • Thanks for the info @kobamoto !! There are a lot of things that aren't defined/explained. Is there a manual anywhere?

  • I'm not sure if there is a manual, I'll check

Precisely why I say the pricing model is absurd, @JohnnyGoodyear. This is the rationale that any thinking person will utilize.

  • i don't see one in the app, but it's pretty straight forward. just click on the eye in the lower left hand corner and it'll make sense, you'll probably wanna start with the new sound button.
there's a tutorial by gmslayton on the tube...

I don't see anyone demanding anything here. Just people surprised at the price point considering the lack of any connectivity.

Obviously, Retronyms have a business model, and this tells them that those of us who would buy it the app had AB and other connectivity aren't their target.

No worries, there are many developers with a different model, such as Novation, and those are the people who'll be getting my money. Simples.

I quite like the pricing rational :)
for a samplist to get a tool like this just to do loop work on the go is worth more than 12 bucks, heck I paid 15 for launchpad, also have blocs and there is no editing of individual slices in blocks, or panning either launchpad or blocs......
the iPhone version of hook is a steal for those of us who's priority is not the sample packs, but they probably plan to make money off of the sample pack circuit.

  • I just wish it had sidechain comp

  • Using the iphone version in an ipad just because it's free makes to me no real sense. Honestly I believe this app is well worth the 12$ they ask for it.

Yeah I saw that, so edited my initial post but guess it didn't update fast enough.

My initial thoughts are they spyed on the threads for our requests in Blocs thread and Remixlive thread because they have a lot of the features I've been wanting for awhile. They've got music library import with sample start point feature (although the buttons could be made bigger, right now super tiny but better than nothing)

I freaking forgot my headphones and am on subway now so can't do anything but check out features but is this the closest we have to Ableton on iOS?

I've been waiting for a long time to get sample import on iPhone Novation despite iPad version having it launchpad so for this app to have it outta the gate makes me a little more forgiving of their past

    yes, scene launching, crossfader

    Wait, how does that work?

  • Is there a setting that can be set to have a track play through each loop once and move to the next one in the track? Let's say you aren't doing anything live, and you want to use the app to compose a track with just loops, and have it play through the whole song....Is this possible?

  • no follow actions yet

  • R.Nyms said they are going to make it possible to record via iaa while other clips are playing in update.... impc pro already can do this.

  • @Audiojunkie Like a song mode? There is no sequencing capabilities. You would just have to set each loop timing to 1 beat, hit the record button and then trigger each row manually. A song mode would be nice though.

Exactly!! That would be really useful!!

Are there any other prominent apps that don't offer input monitoring? Does Samplr? Beatmaker? I assume that Cubasis and Auria Pro do, And for the benefit of the spectators in the courtroom, would you mind explaining, um, exactly what input monitoring is? (The ability to hear source audio in a track whether it is armed, recording or in standby, correct? That doesn't sound too hard to achieve....) Not trolling, just trying to be clear.

    You got it right :)

BeatMaker2 has input monitoring as does Cubasis, AudioShare, TwistedWave, Garageband, SunVox, FingerBeat, Vogel CMI Pro to name a few of the 'recording capable' apps I have on my iPad.

In practice. If you connect your say iRig Mic HD or any Line-In device to the iPad(via lightning) it's quite convenient to be able to hear what the iPad is receiving either thru 'loop-back' to the audio-interface if it has output or to a pair of attached headphone before starting to record. (It's easy to test the practical function in apps like AudioShare (Monitor On in the Record dialogue) or enabling the 'speaker' icon on an armed track in Cubasis).

When recording/sampling in the nature it's quite common to attach a mic to the iPad/iPhone and use a pair of headphones to listen what the mic grabs. Without a monitor function this is not possible :D (The same applies if directly sampling 'speakerless' devices).

What bothers me is the developers ignorance and/or lack of understanding of the input-monitor function...

I still have hope that at least AudioCopy will get a input-monitor feature making it usable as a 'field recorder', without a monitor function it's well.... (Most of use remember how long it got to get a simple feature as 'delete sample' feature implemented in another 'pro' app, a function that should have been there from day 1).

Then again I'm not a DJ so I can't judge the usefulness of 'Hook'...

  • I'm no dj either, but for samplist this is great..... I don't know what's up with all of these apps that come out without a delete feature but through our lobbying we got retro to put it in before those other like apps got it, and some still don't.

I think input monitoring is coming but in the meantime I use audioshare for line sampling, hooks in app sampling and iaa sampling are the best.

  • I do wish it had the resampling feature of the impc pro

  • No hate for Retronyms here (I think they bring a lot of innovation to the platform) but I'm having a lot of problems with IAA recording into Hook.

Patterning results in tons of squelchy noise.
DM2's playhead can't even be started
ISpark can be heard but won't sync tempo

There is something going on because I have no problems with recording into iMPC Pro. Kind of surprised this slipped through.

Until it's fixed, this is pretty unusable to me.

  • what are your device specs and model, and how is animoog working for you in the impc pro?

  • I'm liking it a lot too on the iPhone
