you also might need those super great fx that don't exist in blocs wave yet
individual slice edit
import from iTunes library
etc....
I've been lucky in that I haven't had any of the slicing problems you've encountered. I not being able to record via iaa while clips are playing was getting on my nerves, thankfully they said they are going to change that
It wasn't the slicing, that's fine, it was the fact that for some reason, Hook does not want to grab the most recent audio in the pasteboard, leading to much back and forth between audio share and multiple pastes before it finally took the clip I intended. To me, audio copy/paste on the pasteboard should be the most straightforward process in iOS music apps and it has consistently behaved properly on 99% of apps I've used. To have it suddenly become a convoluted, shot in the dark process in Hook is beyond frustrating. You'd think they could get that right. Anyways
I've learned through missing panning/mixing in apps like blocs that these things are not always a reflection of the devs talent but I do understand your sentiments. These devs just need more time and reminders.
@db909
The smooth audiocopy experience happens if you use the AudioCopy app...which isn't so popular hereabouts, but it is free, and makes the import smooth...
I just realized you cant record into Audioshare the output of hook...bummer
So how do you do a mixdown?
hit the record button at the top of the screen
Spot on. I don't understand why either, and that's the most frustrating part. Why wouldn't you want folks to have every possible option to get sounds in? If you wanted it to be successful it would seem like it would be better integrated with the well established ecosystem. As it is, it kind of feels like all the garage band limitations with an added bonus of a finicky interface and a boat load of bugs. Getting my own sounds into this thing should not be a process that makes me want to kick this cat as I walk inside. It's not even my cat.
Thing is: import of ones sounds is built around either live IAA, or the AudioCopy app ecosystem, which includes the sample packs for sale therein, and integration with Tabletop (and Rebirth) for shipping fodder into Hook.
Doing stuff with live audio and/or samples in Retronyms means doing stuff in that ecosystem, IAA for live play, AudioCopy (the app) for samples. A choice that they made since Tabletop got IAA, and they rebuilt the old Sonoma ACP. It's a done deal, from what we've seen since.
The upside is that AudioShare is set up for bulk import into AudioCopy, and that folder can then be bulk imported into Hook
yep, the only sample import problems I have are that you can't audition what you're importing from your iTunes library before you import it...... and thankfully they are going to take a look at that as well.
I couldnt for the life of me figure out how to bulk import from audioshare. I can only do one sample at a time.
I only do one at a time too, looks like littlewood goes from audioshare to audio copy to hook
The algorithm when changing the tuning sounds really bad. The warping and beatgriding is annoying as hell. And loops length is limited which means it's not really a Dj app, you can't mix whole songs.
I'm finding the time stretching sounds horrible. A 176bpm percussion loop sounds dreadful at 120bpm. This is at the default 50 threshold in the auto slice setting. In BlocsWave the time stretch just works and sounds good (IMO).
I have AudioCopy (don't mind using it and it usually works pretty well with other apps) - but I swear it's copying in the wrong file into hook sometimes. I think there are bugs. Admittedly if you take the whole folder it works. But I'm talking about bringing in individual files.
Then finally there's this renaming thing. I don't really understand why, when I do the number of beats thing it insists on auto renaming. If you bring 10 clips in from Gadget they are going to be named from track 1-10. If hook starts renaming these from 11 upwards it gets VERY confusing!
yeah some people call it a dj app but a dj would not think so.... the crossfader would be on the clip page if it was, and there would be a tap tempo...
what about the warping and beatgriding is it you don't like.... just not a fan of warping and gridding or ?
how many bars is the loop?
also what happens when you stretch one of the loops that came with hook the same amount, does it sound equally as dreadful?
Yep, you are right about Blocs, you have to set the key and the number of beats when you import. It takes 5 secs and if you have the key and the tempo in the file name it does it automatically.
How does one add the key to a user sample in hook?
Does Hook really have the best time stretching on iOS.? It sounds wrong to me. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
I would be one of those rating it, if I could get it to work.
It's 4 bars.
Ill find some time and try the same amount of stretch with a similar hook factory loop.
then to set it correctly it would be 4 slices and 16 beats, is that how you set it?
Reflection regarding 'Time-Stretch' and comparison between Hook and BlocsWave.
These to apps may use two completely different methods(to my ear) to 'stretch' the sounds.
BlocsWave 'recalculates' the wave-form when changing tempo while Hook(and iMPC Pro) seem to use similar method to what was used in the old 'tracker days'(the sample offset command) and automatically triggers the detected 'transient points/slices' at appropriate time and order.
To make this less evident when stretching the sounds to slower speeds the slice starts to play back in reverse when it has reaches the end to avoid silence. (This method is also used with REX files).
I may be totally off and my ears are playing tricks on me but that's my analysis of the situation.
I set to 16 beats. But I let the auto slicer do its thing. I think there were more than 4 slices. And some were bigger than others.
I think I heard some backward sounds.
try 4x16
Thanks. I will. That would make sense.
I think manipulating loops already in Hook is much more straight forward than getting your loops into and having them work as expected. For me, it will be worthwhile to learn more before deciding how I can use Hook for imported material.
Bug update today
Did you check what they changed?
Downloaded the iPhone free version. Tried sampling Eleastic Drums, no sound (sound stops after playing one bar). With AUM I get a loud buzz (Retronyms keeps trying to destroy my ears and gear like iMPC pro beta).
Finally loaded my old trustful BeatMachine and got sound . Hook fails to sample accurate/on specific bars so had to trim manually but while messing with slices it crashed.
Deleted.
I will not even bother to download the free iPhone version until the mic/line-in recording gets an option for input-monitoring.(I connect the stuff I sample directly to the iOS device using Line6 MobileIn bypassing any kind of mixer for as clean input-source as possible and not being able to monitor what comes in is "got no polite words for this"!).
I tried the free version, and managed to import a few of my own bits of noise. Not really my cup of tea and deleted it, but was tempted by the full version after watching Doug's vid (as always) - the cross fading was very clever. As with iMPC Pro you can see the potential for great things, so if it gets more love I might take a plunge in a future sale. Maybe.
