Hey, off-topic, but one question RE: iMPC Pro - do you find the default compression levels to be an irritation? What's the first thing you do when you start a new project on iMPC Pro? Lower the main levels?
Thanks.
It's a thorn in my side.
iPad Air 2 - 9.3.2
I can get one or two notes to play in animoog and then iMPC Pro crashes consistently every time.
Is it too loud or are you getting distortion? I haven't had a problem myself.
this is exactly my experience... they've acknowledged it and said they are going to do something about it I'm just impatient, this and the lack of panning and sample import and loop export across iOS is driving me nuts... ... You'd think that if iaa didn't work it just wouldn't work but my other synths work beautifully via iaa.
Patterning is not working for me via iaa at all (generator)
Yeah my levels were high but someone here suggested to lower the Gain in output section of the mixer view and that did it!
Ridiculous. It's not working for me either, but it's a different problem than Hook. I wonder when this broke? I wonder what else isn't working in iMPC? This is just speculation but I l think they have a very serious link problem in both apps.
Installed iPhone version on the iPad, tried out the record-from-IAA functionality (Animoog, a piece of one of @RustiKs presets https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/14522/new-free-animoog-preset-bank-available). Lovely preset (lovely in the sense of "when-I-close-my-eyes-I-see-burning-buildings"), lovely sliced loop.
Imported clips from AudioCopy, also lovely. AudioCopy is of course a key vector for Hook: if you own kits/banks, and to bring in own your own stuff...acidic loops from Rebirth for the example. Now all the Retronyms apps, that have tight loop making integration with AudioCopy can have a second life on the device, as Hook-fodder makers...
Yep.
I need to clear space on my phone before I download but surely:
Is there a batch export of slices or anything handy like that?
Batch import if you use AudioCopy app...from app-named folders eg Audioshare, or any with ACP export...
Thanks. Although I think I understood about 75% of that .
How about batch export of 16 slices from Hook out to AudioCopy?
Sorry! Downloaded now and just watched the splash tutorial. So being able to shoot a whole folder of samples from Audiocopy straight to the stage looks pretty amazing.
You could therefore batch export a lot of loops straight from Gadget to Audiocopy. And then straight in in one go to the stage of Hook. I presume.
That is cool.
Hook is amazing on the iPhone 5S guys!!!!
Recorded some model 15 trimmed and sliced it and it played in perfect sync with the preset clips. Then loaded up Voice Rack effects and Wow!!!!! Could send each channel to it for processing. I think they left out the start stop for a reason. This thing is super addicting!!! Music never ends!
So worth the price for the iPhone version! Will definitely get the full iPad version.
I can see me chopping up some loops from RDM and making some rock songs. Still don't know how I'll do it but this, gadget and blocs wave are my top composing apps! Oh and inf Looper for the chords and midi.
Music never stops!!!
Right.
Can't work out the flux fader thing yet. But I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.
I noticed what looks like pretty full midi learn... Again, surely that's good??
Can someone tell me if Spotify sampling is still limited to an arbitrary 30 second clip from the track, like it was in beta, or if you can sample from the whole track now?
Hook-grabber interface is super cool, but won't be of value to me unless I can choose from anywhere in the track.
The app-named folders references the AC app's set up: when you open from Retronyms apps like Hook (including iMPCs), it's got a function that asks u if u want to import the whole set from a given folder. If you own banks from shop it asks if you want to brink the whole kit, and as u open subfolders it asks thesaurus all the way down to single file. If you've sent stuff into AC from a given app that apps given a folder by its app name, and if you've opened AC from Hook it asks the same thing, if you want to batch import the whole folder. Irony think AC supports subfolders of your own files...
I got it because...I don't know, why not. And I actually rather like it. Seems like the intention is good enough at least. I think the demos didn't really do it justice because they weren't done in a genre of music I really like at all, but I think I can get some other use out of it. It's got some promise I think. But recording a sample from Spotify is just completely unusable for me. Everything I've recorded that way has come in full of noise and or silence in weird places. It absolutely doesn't work in its current form. Also noticed some problems with IAA but not sure if they're the apps fault or just the busted way IAA drunkenly wobbles down the street. If I select "instrument" of Drumjam, record with that, then delete that iaa node and bring in the main output iaa of Drumjam, I get silence. I've run into this silence thing a couple of times I other apps but I've recreated it this way several times now. Also I've had the app just crash and completely close on me when trying to import from Spotify. Also seems to be a bit of a mess around previewing recorded clips while the song is playing (or loops are triggered or whatever you want to call it). Seems they aren't always in sync, sometimes the recorded loops can get "stuck" and won't turn off. So, yeah, there are bugs. That's not entirely shocking for a day one app of this complexity and I'm sure they'll get it sorted out. I don't know if it will get much use or not, but it's interesting to think about and certainly not a bad experience even with the current bug list. I wouldn't call it just a toy. Overall it's a well thought out app and will probably get some use from me, though probably not the way they intended for their target audience.
And if you 'audio paste' one file that is deep within a folder-structure (like the banks that can be bought) the whole folder-structure is re-created in the destination app (at least in iMPC Pro). If you then decide to delete the sample the folder-structure remains since there is no way to delete folders other than connecting to a computer and manually doing it with iFunBox arghhhhh.
And even if you delete folders in AudioCopy the folders are no longer shown in the app list but remain on the iOS device meaning they are not completely deleted.
Happy Hooking everyone
I think they have been listening to you Comrade @Samu
the folder structure inside Hook fixes this: importing a clip into Hook from inside "kicks" inside "one shots" inside "house shiz we sold you" inside AudioCopy does replicate the ENTIRE FOLDER STRUCTURE from inside AudioCopy, (as in iMPC Pro) -
BUT in Hook you can delete the whole daisy chain at each level of the folder structure from sample on up...
score one more for Retronyms. Hopefully they'll go back and fix this in iMPC Pro.
EDIT: AudioCopy update just went live with some fixes...
Would be nice if their hive-mind went back down the chain....
Neato. Congrats to the Retronymers on the release.
Mmm.
Ok. So I've pretty much figured the flux fader. Quite nice. Not sure I'll ever use it in a track though. Those riser sounds might get pretty familiar.
Anyway - sampling a couple of bars from Spotify - bloody love it. Now that has legs. It's so easy.
It seems to inexplicably just give you 30secs from the middle of any track (??). Any way to navigate to the rest of the track?
And slicing...
Again, love the auto slice. Seems to work really well. But can anyone help me with what you can actually DO with the slices? Am I supposed to be able to assign 16 slices to 16 clips? If so how, please?
(Really I'd just like to be able to export those 16 slices for use in Gadget).
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 the slice loops are for slicing up the loop at the transients in order for Hook to better loop and allow for better time stretching.
It would be nice to be able to export the slices but you can't.
Maybe they will add that to AudioCopy along with the hook grabber.
definitely hit retro up on their Facebook and request the export slices feature... they are listening right now and already working on stuff for the next update
You'd think they'd let you export the slices to IMPC pro. I totally did the Spotify grabbing, but yes, it's a random 30 seconds. And at least with copyright free jazz I'm looking yet? The BPM matching is way way off. Of course I'm using the free iPhone version. Perhaps this is different with the iPad?
the phone and iPad version are identical.... how is the bpm way off, it's not automatic you have to adjust it don't you?.....
It tries to figure out the BPM but it seems to always be a little off. Good thing there is a tap tempo and a click you can adjust.
Well, tried to play with it some. It's too buggy for me on an iPad Pro 9.7. When I'm exploring a new app, I make mistakes of course. But the state of this app for me right now is so bug riddled that I can't get a good grasp of what I'm doing wrong v when the app has shet the bid. Gonna hang it up for tonight and try again tomorrow.
And for an app to not have an undo button prominent on every screen at this stage in the horse race is inexcusable. Period.

I asked about this during beta... If it is this way because of some legal issues, and was told it was just a matter of feature priority (although I can't imagine the coding effort was different to grab 30 seconds vs the whole thing).
JP suggested I request this feature, which I did.
9 times out of 10 (literally in a five min song) the area I want to grab is not in the Spotify clip. It takes a great feature, and an amazing user interface with the hook grabber, and really just breaks it.
PLEASE REQUEST FULL LENGTH SPOTIFY SAMPLING!
