Yeah I think I'll skip this one
What, no Apple Music support? I thought that was possible with the API changes Apple released earlier this year?
However it seems to work without a Spotify Premium account (at least in iPad) which is crazy cool (and maybe the reason for the 30 sec. Limit).
Of course if Premium accounts are also limited that's stupid of course.
Full Apple Music support would the cool though (and it would be the first app to implement it).
I think I'll play with the iPhone version until the dust settles ;-)
After watching a couple of demos here, I've put Hook in my wish list to keep an eye on it. The app has potential, for sure. But at the moment is seems loaded with mind numbing EDM crap, and missing features that are vital to me. Judging by what I read here, the developers seem to want to follow their own path, and have a take it or leave it attitude. So for now, I'll leave it.
can you be more specific, the devs have been quite responsive about this app..... they don't do audiobus but everything else people are talking about here they are looking into and are already planning on implementing some.
Until they introduce their next app, then all ideas get left on the floor. This company has along track record of that. Ever since their work with Imini (which surprisingly got followed up on and within 2 years of release finally was stable enough to use live) I've not had any desire to check out any products.
That's why I feel as I do, not because they're villains for not including audiobus, as mentioned earlier in the thread (although since it's apparently not hard to implement). I like the quote from someone earlier in the thread, "not invented here" syndrome.

Not 'doing' AudioBus is a problem for me. I see no good reason why any IOS music app cannot include this compatibility. What do they have against it?
Also, why do I have to use the horrible AudioCopy. I prefer to use AudioShare, and Dropbox.
I will keep an eye on this app, and hope for the best. But at the moment it appears that Retronyms preferred development path diverges from the path I like my apps to follow. And with the best will in the world, an app would have to be revolutionary for me to change that now.
I just can't figure this one out. I can't really get it's place in the scheme of things. It's great that the phone version is free and it looks like a lot of thought has gone into it, but the terribly 'generic' sounds that come with it don't inspire me to take it further.
No Audiobus, No Audioshare, No AU, Dropbox, Audiocopy ......No deal......
Yep. It really does absolutely nothing that I can't make happen elsewhere. And better.
Tried the iPhone version.
Good on anyone who's happy with it. I pass.
@kobamoto it might be a good idea to create a seperate thread which focuses on how people use Hook rather than a thread such as this where a significant proportion of the posts revolve around the reasons why they won't be using Hook?
Audioshare works for me. Just export the wav file from AS to Audiocopy and it can be pasted into Hook! Worked like a charm with a nice long 2 minute loop i did from Rock Drum Machine.
I must say my first try at getting 5 loops from Gadget into a new project in hook wasn't a great success.
They batch imported in ok... And you can send them to the stage and drag them around.
But they come in with no BPM or Key. (In fact how an earth do you set a key?).
They also each seem to need to be 'sliced' in order for them to loop. So that's fairly laborious to do that to each file. Once done it detected my 176bpm drum and bass loops as 86bpm (easily done I guess) - but I see no way to correct this.
Playing the loops back sounded wrong (maybe some were recognised as 176bpm).
But before I had time to go back and check, it then crashed. Loosing the entire project.
I haven't yet found the inclination to try again.
I did create a project with a sound pack I had previously bought and that seemed completely pre configured and all set up with BPM and key etc already. So it seems to work a lot better with purchased packs right now.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 Ok So I had a quick play with this and it seems that there is a naming convention.
XXXX_XXXX_tempo_key_nameofsound.
So you could have a standard naming convention like Initials (Underscore) SoundPackName or Song (Underscore) Tempo (Underscore) Key (Underscore) _ Name of sound
Cool. Thanks.
So does that mean you don't need to do the slice thing after that?
Also, how do you determine what key the stage as a whole is in? (Presumably it then automatically transposes loops that are not in that key?)
Also how do you assign a key to a loop sampled from Spotify?
Thanks for your help on this . Much appreciated.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 I have no idea about setting the key but I can tell you that in order to properly set the tempo, the program needs to know the length of your sample. You can set the
number of bars in the slice mode.
I love the idea of this program but I'm having a lot of the same troubles as you. It makes me really appreciate how blocs works with samples.
Even if the program knows the tempo of your samples, you need to give it guidance how to play back the sample if the tempo of your current project is significantly different. You do this by slicing it up. You should notice after slicing a sample that hook does a pretty good job of playing the sample at the same pitch even if the tempo of the project is a lot lower. This way you can have samples of different tempos all working together in a single project.
Thanks. I just wonder why the user needs to go in and do this. In BlocsWave it just does it for you.
Sure, it's good if you can chose to go in and adjust slices if neccessary, but it would be good if it defaulted to auto slicing. (Or maybe it does if you put the tempo in the filename?)
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 I tried it with the tempo in the Filename and I still had to go in and tell it to slice it up. I might try a few more things later to see if I can get it to.
Here is a response I got from JP regarding this.
"the best way to make your own sounds loop is to add the tempo and slice data in "slice loop" in the editor. After that, they'll loop like anything else. "
Also, did some further testing with Ableton Link and it doesn't sync up correctly. I let them know and said its files and they are working on a fix for it.
Had another go. Mostly the naming convention thing doesn't work for me (pretty sure I got it right). Perhaps with the sound packs the info is contained in the wav somehow?
Once or twice it might have worked.
There's a very odd thing with it changing the names of files too. If I have "songname_176_A_xx_track 1" and then set it to have 16 beats not the default 8 to get the BPM right, then click 'done'. It renames it to eg ...track 7 (if I also have 6 other tracks loaded).
This makes it extremely tricky to figure out what you're doing with clips saved out of Gadget.
I also swear it was bringing in different clips to the ones I actually selected in Audiocopy - or there is some buggy behaviour certainly.
Pretty fraustrating.
Yea I had some similar things happen to me but it seems that it will not over write if a Filename is the same. So if you use general pasteboard it names the file general pasteboard and if you try and paste in another file it will not over write the file. So I have just been deleting the general pasteboard file after I import, Slice it up and rename it.
I also have a German wife.
matt you mentioned blocs, in blocks wave don't you have to tell blocs the key/beats information if you make your own samples that's really cool if it does it for you I haven't used it in a while but last time I did I had to put in key information etc..?
also hook has the best time stretching on iOS
also when you slice up samples in hook you can go in and do things to the individual slices like edit them, reverse them etc...
the fact that you can get something like this free on your phone is being extremely underrated, there isn't anything on iOS that can do what this does for free, and the closest thing paid is the impc pro....
So can someone walk me through how to get an 8 bar custom loop to....loop? The project bpm is the same as the pasted audio
Yea I would love to see a love child between BlocsWave, Launchpad, and Hook. Maybe we will see that in Loopy Masterpiece Edition. Maybe we will see.
go sample edit, set it to slice loop, then the loop button will appear n the clip parameter page
you have to set the loops to slice loop in sample edit mode for them to time stretch or loop
Thanks. I got it working. Unfortunately so far it has been a huge pain in the ass to get my own loops going. A. All the setting up each time you import: slice mode, drag markers, set beat number, set loop behavior. This wouldn't be too bad if it weren't for THE HORRIBLE PASTEBOARD INTERACTION. I dunno even know how it works, but I ended up having to import to audio share, then copy, then paste, oops it grabbed the last one I did, delete wrong clip (which is buggy as hell too), rinse repeat. Now I have the loop I want finally. Get everything playing, find out the reverb and chorus effects are the worst I've ever heard. So now I'm down to some basic eq, drive, ring effects. All the really cool shit seems you can only do it live or automate a transition. I dunno, so far this thing is just not fluid and a frustrating experience trying to work with custom loops.
My verdict thus far: still waiting for that panning and mixer to come into Blocs Wave
