Nice app. Shame it isn't 6 operator DX7 though. This app is more or less like DXi but better with more features. However, to get the most from it need a MX series Yamaha synth.
After a quick look it looks like a 'engine' from ReFace DX as each operator as feedback option.
There is also a 'model selection' which changes the sound quite a bit.
Still hoping Yamaha will add IAP to this so we can unlock all the patches and features.
(I don't need nor want another keyboard at my desk).
I already have an expensive Yamaha keyboard, but not an MX, which seems a little odd.
Yeah, I have two somewhat classic Yamaha Synths, the SY85 and TX81z.
I would gladly pay IAP to get full functionality!
(After 'Nick' quit at Yamaha UK many many years ago I have no connections inside the company, used to 'beta-test' the Mac versions of the PLG Editors and the Mac-drivers for the SW1000XG).
I'll see if I can write a somewhat polite letter to Yamaha support and ask for IAP...
I sent a support request to Yamaha regarding alternate methods for unlocking FM Essentials.
(I used the form on the app support page).
Will it work with a mox8?
Don't know, but if you have one it's free to try
The link gives me an error saying "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store."
Oh well, I have (and love) the FM4 app.
(Also have FM7 and FM8 ... And a TX81Z module.)
Search for fm essential in iTunes.
Thx. Found it! Now I get to see enjoy the same fun/aggravation as the rest of you. :-)
I think I will delete this frustrationware and go back to enjoying FM4.
Doesn't work with my MOXF. Hope they change this. I don't understand why they would not make it accessible to MOXF and XF users? We've spent way more money on keyboards from them and yet they give this app solely to the new MX?
I'm with you comrade
+1
I'm glad this wasn't a paid "app"...no state saving makes it pointless and not yet worthy of the AU badge. Dismissed!
Sounds great, just like synth book did. But why is Yamaha unable to release normal synth apps, instead of weird limited free ones? My money is right here.
Indeed.. that Synthbook thingy as an AU would be good enough to become my bread-and-butter go to workhorse synth. I'd pay a good price for that.
@Samu: I used to have an SY85 also. Great piano sound except that it died out too quickly(decay) ...Love the analog slightly overdriven sound. As a keyboard salesman in NY I sold Moby his SY85.
That's cool

I 'sampled' few of my favourite 'raw' samples for usage elsewhere using the Line6 MobileIn

Agreed, even better would be a full emulation of AN1X or 50% of AN1X, the PLG-150AN
(I'm a PWM junkie and the 'Free EG' on the PLG-150AN is freaking awesome, 4 hand-drawn modulation 'waves' that could be tempo-synced or left free-running at insane speeds).
Yamaha has a 'gold-mine' to monetise on iOS so I'm still hoping for IAPs as an additional unlock method...
That was my thinking. I've always wanted to own an AN1x (when it came out I had to choose between it or a Korg Prophecy, and I chose the latter).
And since they acquired Steinberg they also have the knowhow in-house to pull it off in style!
That's why I 'dream' about Cubasis 2.0 being able to unlock the Yamaha Apps in the same way that some Yamaha keyboards can unlock Cubasis LE
Still no reply from Yamaha regarding adding IAP as an option to unlock the app...
(My TX81z refuses to work and suffers from constant memory loss, probably the battery is dead).
It is funny how Roland, Yamaha and Korg are still making their presence felt in iOS but in quite different ways. It seems Roland are almost looking the other way and accidentally put out an app now and then. Korg have made what they can do on iOS their own thing and along with the hardware, they seem to pay more attention. Yamaha sort of seem as though they want to concentrate on pianos and musicianship-enhancing areas, and these interesting synths things seem almost to have been slipped in without anyone official noticing or realising what they in fact are.
I should already know the answer to this, but I still haven't memorized some of these intricacies:
Are AUs supposed to support state saving? I loaded up several instances of this AU in AUM with different presets selected and saved that AUM set-up, but upon re-loading the set-up, the presets go back to "E.Piano King 1".
Yes there are supposed to support state-saving. This one does not. So it's not really useable. Very unfortunate though I hope updates are planned to bring it up to spec. Perhaps @LFS can help us with this one.
AU does support state saving but this app only works properly when you attach the hardware keyboard and unlock all the features, including saving presets and state saving presumably. A pity it's been hobbled.
You almost have to go out of your way as a developer to disable state saving in Audio Units. The fact this plugin doesn't support it hardly seems like an accidental oversight to me.
We need these guys to make a come back but this time on iOS
well, not really... if you're into FM then TF-7 has all you ever dreamed of... in particular the 'extended algorithms'
and it's easier to tweak than the afforementioned sysex-controllers for the hardware
in TF-7 you really get a clear picture of algorithm details and interaction
sound quality is stellar, but needs CPU cycles...
cheers, Tom

Another option would be the pretty awesome on iOS is dexed.
http://asb2m10.github.io/dexed/
But then again, I love my TX81Z so this Yamaha App is just what the doctor ordered.
It desperately needs another alternative method of unlocking...
(I'll see if I can dig out other e-mails to Yamaha than the standard support form).
