But I like having a free AU even if it only has 10 presets.
There could be another view.you get a new great keyboard + a great app as a bonus.
Agreed
However I don't think you really have an AU if when you save the project and re-open it all changes / selected patches are reset. It takes deliberate work to hack the AU interface like that.
Can you imagine the manager telling the developer -hey make sure these "free presets" cannot be recalled!- Dissapointed developer rolls his eyes and does what he's told

The MX49 does indeed look quite tempting. All of my 'favourite'(looked at the voice list) Yamaha samples are there.
And 'sampling' that Keyboard will be 100% digital thanks to class compliance. Now lets just hope that a MX editor finds it's way to iOS too to allow full editing of the synth and that will make it quite hard to resist.
But I do not need another keyboard. I'd gladly pay premium (~$100) to get a complete Yamaha app with AU-X's that covers, AN, DX, VL, YB3, AWM2(XG/XG-Lite) with a dedicated AU-X effects.
(Imagine the above as instruments in Cubasis, yummy!).
To be clear I'm not ranting against limitations of free software per se.... this for me is completely about protecting the proper emergence of AU on iOS. The AU value proposition means multi-instancing and state-saving.
In a year or so there will be several more high quality multi-timbral AUv3 instruments. Some of us are just passionate about ensuring a successful transition.
Yes me too
I've also spent thousands on desktop instrument software from Native Instruments, Spectrasonics etc. I would spend the same on software for iPad Pro. It's not a toy...
Agreed, I 'own the right to use' the Korg Legacy Collection on my laptop and the iPad version of the 'M1'(iM1) is way more user-friendly. I'm also very close to getting the Roland stuff too...(SH-101, SoundCanvas etc.).
But I've got a 'soft-spot' for Yamaha because my first ever 'new' synth I bought was the SY-85 after evaluation and learning how to load my own samples via disk. (I made a small conversion 'shell command' for the Amiga back in the days).
I somehow feel Yamaha will add IAP to this app quite soon because the launch-timing is just so bad since hardware to unlock it is not even available
In a way it'd be quaintly interesting if they offered it as a paid extra within their Mobile Music app.
Or added AU-X's to Mobile Music Seqeucner so we could use those sounds in other apps too
What's the tempo slider for in the AU interface? Also I hope they surface the ARP in AU at some point
My best guess is tempo-based effects
)
(Did you notice that the - button doesn't work but the + does
Hahaaa nice catch
I do like the 'motion-sequencer' so the tempo setting controls that too. But to be honest it should use the tempo from the host so the tempo-slider could really be removed.
I also noticed that DX Essentials is velocity sensitive when using the Cubasis keyboard but the built-in keyboard lacks y-axis velocity. But then again It was 'designed' to be used with the MX49/61 version 2...
The app is not huge in size so it can stay on my iPad awaiting updates
Yes , same. Updates are the new "notifications"
I’m not offering opinions. Yamaha offers the app to everyone, but says plainly that its full functionality is available when you connect to a specific hardware synth series. Indecency is subjective, but I’m not seeing it.
I don’t have the hardware and am passing on the app. Are you saying there’s no compatibility with Audio Unit Extensions (as advertised) even when properly connected?
A question for Yamaha is how many iOS users would pay that much. I wouldn't, but the iPad is not a pro device for me.
Even without save options FM Essentials is a nice source for 'happy accidents' and sound-exploration
Yep...it sounds super! and once unlocked could become contender for top instruments on iPad
I tend to think of the Yamaha FM Essentials AU implementation as not working as you'd expect because non-lock/crippled AU apps consistently have the ability to save the state of the AU as a preset such that it will be recalled when loaded up again. The U.S. App Store description doesn't mention the lack of preset saving or limited access to the app in their description on the App Store. Many people will not be happy about trying the app out and thinking they have some sort of limited AU host preset recall when in fact they have none after spending some time developing a setup they want to save.
Yamaha should be up front about the lock feature in their App Store description rather than alienating people by suggesting there are functions in the locked app that aren't available such as normal AU support.
Thank you and exactly.
I have a 'gut feeling' that IAP will become available with the next update...
I mean they have to at least fix the non-working '-' button in the tempo menu when it's used as an AU-X
(There are some other quirky bungs in the app that need a fix too).
Another 'question' that popped up while I was thinking about this. Is unlocking 'permanent' or does the MX49/61 Version 2 need to be attached all the time in order for the AU-X/App to stay in an 'unlocked' state?
The 'reviews' in the different countries app-stores 'scream' for IAP or removal from the AppStore...
This is not good for Yamaha's reputation... (Especially when the hardware that is needed for unlocking is not available yet).
From the U.S. App Store:

Plug into MX!
-You can play full 271 voices and voice store function if you connect your iOS with Yamaha music synthesizer MX BK/BU series.

I don't know about the AUx implementation. Seems odd they'd cripple state-saving in the real version. Is that confirmed?
Got no access to the full version since there are no new MX keyboards around to unlock the app with, if there was I could easily test it... I've found at least a couple of other 'bugs' in the AU-X so i suppose it will get an update soon anyway.
I think Yamaha could really make their mark with an IOS based music workstation, kind of like Korg has done only hopefully more open. While it undoubtedly generous of them to release high quality apps for free, to then half cripple them is not doing their brand any favours. I have owned Yamaha hardware keyboards for many years, and more expensive ones than the MX, so feel a little peeved by their current policy.
@lovadamusic you can try creating an AU preset yourself in an AU host app such as AUM and the preset will not recall the settings you tried to save. Yamaha either made sure the AU couldn't save any settings or they didn't implement AU correctly. Even the selection of the app's factory presets we've been given access to can not be saved as an AU preset as they will not be recalled correctly which would be typical for an IAA app but not for an AU app.
It's one thing to not have access to parts of the app without unlocking, but it's another to say it has AU support when a critical element of AU, preset saving/recall, is absent.
Saying something like partial AU support with full AU support with purchase of the Yamaha synth and full access to all the presets in the app would be more accurate and straight forward. There is no indication of the app being locked until you download and open it. People can't tell from the App Store description if the presets are for the app or the Yamaha hardware synths. Clearly Yamaha withheld revealing the locked/crippled aspects of the app until people downloaded and used the app.
If this is all the thanks they get I can't see Yamaha bothering to make more apps at all.
Oh! They're doing this to feel good about themselves!
Silly me. I thought they were just in it for the money.
I think disappointment wants to make a scandal here, but is Yamaha really trying to dupe anyone? If so, they could have just not said anything at all about the necessity of the hardware. The full AUx support is apparently for the fully working version, and they might not have thought to, or thought it worthy of spelling that out. Considering it’s a crippled version, why would they allow saving anything? No one should have created anything with it without making sure they could save the preset first. It’s a crippled free app. The App Store description says so up front. Add to that—Yamaha doesn’t embrace iOS like some other big companies. That’s apparent, so expectations when it comes to what they offer should be in line with that reality.
No one knows at this time whether Yamaha’s strategy with regard to iOS is wise or not. It may turn out that iOS is not profitable enough, and the love and recognition gained by supporting iOS is not substantial enough to make a difference for a giant like Yamaha. If they make great products, musicians will be buying them regardless. Or maybe they’re just shortsighted and will be sorry… we’ll see.
I somehow feel that the 'strategy' here is to use the iPad as an 'extra screen' for the new MX49/61. I mean the MX will unlock Cubasis LE so in theory you would have a full 'workstation' with added synthesis capability for a reasonable price
If I didn't already own controllers or a laptop and was just starting to get into music making the combination of an iPad with the new MX would be very tempting indeed...
Fine sounding app, shame it is currently 'hobbled'. The re-appearance of the draggable parameters on the oscilloscope is especially nice. As with the excellent AN2015 in synth book, it seems to be another case of a somewhat unfulfilled potential. Hopefully it will eventually be fully liberated.
