It's buyer beware and anyone can request a refund for an app if it doesn't meet their needs.

I prefer to learn about an app before purchasing and have only requested a refund once.

This is my very first one. As I said, I always avoid day 1, but such an hype there has been for this app that I got it without waiting.
My fault. If I had read even one half of the posts in this thread, my conduct would have been different

I don't think the app was hyped, it seemed people were excited about Phonem because of the experience with the other apps and work Wolfgang Palm has done.

The excitement and hype surrounding a forthcoming app release, was one of the things I missed about this forum. That and the inevitable disappointed buyers, bug reports, and refund requests a week or so later.

I'm saving this one for my birthday next week, but what's attracting me to the app is the sound of the thing - from what I've heard it's unique, and rich sounding.

As you are an elder from the Planet Grumpoid I am going to wait until you have officially passed around the sun again and will then look forward to your assessment etc.

It'll be the usual initial giddy over-excitement, followed by raging anger that it isn't working properly, followed by a barely audible admission of user error on my part.

    Marriage.

  • This app is Phonemenal. Love it so far.

Agree. It really adds something to the apps I already have :)

  • I liked the look, I liked the sound, and I liked the feel. If you want speech synthesis then this app is unbeatable on iOS.

But, where phonem's are initially fun (many weeks if not months of my life wasted with a Commodore Vic-20 speech synthesizer cartridge and years later Vocaloid), they quickly become tiresome to program and lacking in proper feeling.

The desire for real vocals returns unsatisfied.

The other synths I already own are currently fulfilling my sound needs.
I cancelled the purchase after a 4 hour session with it resulted in zero useable output.

It's a keeper for me. Not for vocal synthesis, but for wonderful pads. You can put so much movement into a sound. It's wavetable synthesis plus for me. Horrible vocal patches deleted from a working patch base on day one and lots to discover.

Definitely not an app for helping me write music though, as I could quite easily lose days programming sounds with Phonem!

  • +1 love the sound love the app. Took some time but Phonem offers so much control :)

  • Just downloaded new update and I think it's broken the right hand xy pad on the AU extension. Can anyone else confirm? Can't get it working in AUM.

Thanks, very odd, not working for me. Air 2 9.3.2. I'll try a reinstall later.

Seems it's about getting them envelopes to do what you want with the 'voweltable' and getting the excitation levels just right. Lots of small tweaks to get the sound just right.

Ideally, for those of us either too lazy, too busy or unwilling, the app would be smart enough to do the donkey work. I'm thinking of something that can be 'told' via options that a phrase is to be sung or spoken at a certain tempo and pitch. Any chance, Mr Wolfie?

cool do you have any examples of how you use it for pads?

  • Is the AU-X version of Phonem only used to playing the presets created using the stand-alone app?
(I can't seen any buttons for editing in the AU-X Screenshots).

I don't have soundcloud or such, but once I get a set of patches I'm really happy with I will share them.

Same here, I recall seeing this mentioned elsewhere that the AU screen is limited to select/play/perform functions. Deeper editing needs done elsewhere, standalone or IAA.

Seems so, though I think its a fair compromise; Standalone for full-featured editing and AU for performance/recording/automation etc.

  • Opened up in AUM and yes Phonem is a stripped down version with small amount of editing but you can save presets from there.

  • I'm very intrigued by this app. Just watched several videos, but curious if you can import or reference your own sounds into it? Most of videos tweak the presets, and one video shows how you build phonems via typing in text.

I get that, but there are some presets that sound like guitars, etc. and don't sound like they originated as text generated sounds OR voice synthesis. Can you somehow import in or reference your own source samples?

I've gotten as far as touching the keyboard and sounds come out. From what I understand, you can import WaveGenerator and WaveMapper wavetables, of which I know nothing. Not audio files, but don't hold me to it. At the moment, I just really like the sounds it makes.

I was wondering that, I heard a bass guitar patch that sounded like a sample.

  • Many options here and Phonem is capable of a stunning range of sounds. You can create and import wavetables from Wolfgang's other apps - WaveMapper and WaveGenerator...

    Importing resources
You may use your resources from PPG WaveGenerator or WaveMapper in Phonem.
Go to one of these apps using the GO WG or GO WM buttons.
Select a wavetable or TCS you like to transfer to Phonem.
In WaveGenerator you find a new entry in the tools menu on the wave page: Export.
In WaveMapper on the OSC page you find the same in the context menu.
Tapping on it brings you back to Phonem and the new resource is loaded and can be used.

  • Not sure if this vid has been posted, I don't remember with reading through all the posts several days ago. I found it to be very helpful for me to understand this app. Well, who am I kidding. It's a step in that direction for me anyway. lol..

I can't seem to find the damn PRG button to initialize the patch though! As stated by @djpuzzle :)

"PRG button up by the top middle right and you'll see initialize as an option."

Right side of the programs name.

You know me, the weirder the better. Though I'm going to have to pay more attention to the tutorials. Then I can wrestle this screaming, slavering beast to the floor and hopefully regain control of this mad, leaky vessel.

I'm not feeling a great deal of love for this app. I guess I need to RTFM but it's got a very strange way of saving files. I just created a new patch that saved ok, this time, but seems to have rendered other presets silent and imposed my 'signature', whatever that is, onto them. Other times an amazing new sound I created sounds completely different when I reopen it.

I know, read the manual before moaning Monzo, but it's a weird one this. I've watched the vids but it's not sinking in.

It is weird but it's pretty much the same in all his apps so i guess it makes sense to him. Who am i to question the genius of Wolfgang :p

Anyway, once you've done it enough it will sink in and reading the manual and/or watching some vids was definitely required for me to get to grips with it

Definitely worth it though, the sounds this thing can produce are amazing

  • @MonzoPro have you listed all programs in the program browser, because I had a similar thing happen, almost every change you make to a program it re-saves with an iteration number, I also created a new bank to save my final patch, then I deleted all the iterations.
