@technemedia
Very interesting piece, reminded me of Talking Heads circa 'Remain in Light', the mix needs work - the pops on the vocals and the low level backing relative to the voice. I thought the lyrics were really engaging and was actually a bit disappointed with the 'phone' bit of the end, relative to the lyrical build up prior to that.
@theconnactic
Didn't get on with this one, I'm afraid. Sounded like the kind of prog that I'm not keen on. The vibrato on the guitar was a tad 'muted' for me (I know that's a personal preference) I did like the shades of Al di Meola and the drum sound, though and the rather spooky ending.
Is very reminiscent of Mr Sylvian - all you need is some fretless bass and the vocals higher in the mix - don't be shy!
@technemedia the mix needs a little work as the music background is too low compared to the vocal. I thought the beat started out quite interesting but I think it needs a little variation somewhere along the way. Overall though I liked it
@crouchie great song with a really nice vocal performance. I thought the arrangement got a little too fussy particularly in the chorus towards the end, there just seemed to be too much going on for me. As for the mix, I don't think it's a case of the vocal needing to be higher but a case of turning some of the instruments down especially the drums and the bass in the chorus. There's loads of really interesting things going on but sometimes I think they can be a distraction from the song itself. Of course it's probably just me being old and out of touch
@trackedout interesting stuff sort of psychedelic garage rock. Great bass line and guitars, not sure what you were trying to do with the vocals.
You and your Auntie Vanessa have got to team up more. Cracking number. Her voice is stunning, unique. Please dial it (her vocals) up by a million as I want it to fill my lugs up with beauty & class. Is she a professional singster? If not......she should be. Her tone and skill would be ideal for other genres. So natural, nothing forced. I'd love, and be honoured for her to have a bash at one of my disasters. Well, if you don't ask........ Damn, forgot, it has to have a tune. Fair enough. Exactly the same reason I haven't asked @orchardman good lady wife.
Ultra smooth dance deliciousness offering hints of mysticism and the Far East. Also an understated urgency runs underneath and contrasts perfectly the evocative nature of her voice. Cool rhythm section. Maybe that crash cymbal could be dropped a smidgeon but other than cranking those vocals up please, it's another fine song from your stable in the Med.
Thank you, @Igneous1!
Thank you for the kind words, @crouchie!
@trackedout hey man, thanks for your thoughts on my track.I appreciate it dude.
I loved the bass on your track, very cool! You have a cool unique style that I don't hear very often, kinda lo fi,beach vibe?? I do feel you need to work a little on your vocal production though mate. (Just my thoughts dude, keep or sweep ) It's just,I know you can sing fine and you have a cool tone to your voice so why bury it?? IMO your music deserves the best vocal you can give it.
Also...please don't take this the wrong way,but for such a talented dude...you've gotta work a little harder on your song titles!!
So yeah, loved the music as I always do with your stuff.
I'm just trying to give you a little push is all mate...
@crouchie Hey man,I always love the production on your tracks,it's never too busy, nice space, sounds, beat. The vocal is good but, yeah, you know it's still a little low in the mix.Its nice and clean though.
As much as I loved the production I did feel that it took a little too long to get where it was going.I loved it when everything was going on towards the end, really cool,I just wanted it a little sooner is all. The end was way to abrupt for me,which is a shame considering the high quality of the rest of the track.
It's great to hear new stuff from you though mate.:D
Howdy all, interested to hear everyones september sonic babies! Will work thru this months batch and then post my sonic frankenstein. Someone mentioned recently that its hard to be effusive about tunes from genres outside ones own preferred styles...full disclosure that my ears love guitar tunes, but i'll put my biases in the back pocket for a bit.
Studs, great job for a spur o the moment tune. Vanessa has a great voice, reckon she was a bit quiet and the percussion a touch high. Some nice rhythmic melodies rolling through - could consider automation to showcase diff parts of melodic / rhythmic content as the song progressed...but i dont listen to this genre so take with grain of salt. Must be nice to work with such vocal talent, well done.
hey Monzo, nice jungle rythms in the first couple of minutes and liked the synthy bits....reminded me of a video game arcade called 'electric circus' that i used to frequent in the 80's. Ive had a bit of a play with frekvens, its a good fit for this style of tune. Reckon some vocal chants would sit nicely with this song if you felt like changing it up a bit.
Hey Leo, dude youve really got some range to the style of your tunes and also your voice. Great effort vocally, the arrangement really showcased your voice. The style is not really my go, but I really liked the keyboard intro...it gave me a bit of a flasback to an aussie 80's track called ' working class man' that was all over the radio back in the day.
Dude, great guitar intro, really sets the tone and rolls beautifully into the vox. Vocals (lead and background) really lovely. Made me want to know what the song is about (which sadly you tend to miss a bit when you binge listen SOTMC entries as im doing now). Love the guitar playing and tone also, great job.
Hey Dimitri, i was feeling some sinister urgency listening to this one, it really has a vibe to it. Mix is great, as is the playing, and enjoyed the tempo change through the middle of the song. Great job. I'd love to know what lyrics you would have layed on this if you were to add vocals at some point? There's an old skyhooks song called 'horror movie" which is really memorable cos of the vocal theme....i get a similar vibe with your song too.
Thanks mate.
Hey crouchie, great job on this one. I feel very differently about your voice than you, it sounded great in this tune. I also dont think it needed to be higher in the mix, it was clear as a bell for me. The ending was a tad abrupt, but other than that this tune wouldnt be out of place if i was surfing the radio dial in my car.
Hey dude, love the bass line, really dragged me in when that kicked in. Tune was catchy the whole way thru. I'd love to hear the vocals a bit more upfront. Enjoyed the outro where the tune cut to the verby whistle.
Here's my baby for the month This tune is about eating/loving junk food and not giving a rats what anyone else thinks. Guitars via tonestack, bass via flux.fx play, drums from diode108 (scratchy bits were mixed with caramel). This is also my first collaborative tune...my 8yo daughter, who's been learning piano for 4 months, banged out some piano as she was listening to this and i thought 'what the hell', and recorded her in via cubasis (panned right in final verse/outro). Hope you enjoy it.
@marliess with lyrics like 'I love sausage rolls they go in my hole' you can't go wrong. Great fun and musically and production wise really good.
Hey orchardman, thanks for having a listen & glad you liked it.
Thanks matey! Funnily enough I did a similar track a couple of days ago and put a chant type vocal on it. Still sounded rubbish but sort of worked!
Wayyyyy behind on my reviews due to the crazy circumstances in my life right now, but this is my entry for the month.
Lyrics in the spoiler:
Time
Flow through me
So patiently
Moss covering stones
Ashes made from bones
Time
The centuries
Their memories
Lost lingering dust
A cradle caked in rust
So People live
And then they die
And time will give
Then will deny
Time
Eternal line
Endless chime
Echoes in my mind
Waiting for a sign
Time
So unkind
It's eyes are blind
Devouring you alive
So People live
And then they die
And time will give
Then will deny
A fight you won't survive
Honest appraisal says that (for me) that is a good first draft. It feels as though the whole thing might be a little quicker, it also feels that many of your vocal lines come in a tiny bit late, but that's probably not timing but more likely phrasing.
Thanks for having a listen...the vocals were an interesting story for this one. This is actually a re-working of a song I did six months or so back...that version was my first (and last) crack at a 'serious' song, but I couldn't stand my voice on it (it's called 'fly' and is in my soundcloud). So I wrote some new words, changed some of the instrumentation & delivery and this is what came out. I'll probably lay down vocals for a new track next week so appreciate the feedback re timing / phrasing as something to work on.
Really enjoyed the keyboard intro / outro and the atmospheric vibe of the tune. The vocals are really cool....stylistically remind me of black sabbath's planet caravan (which was my fav tune back in the day) and the narrative has a bittersweet vibe of giveth and taketh away. The 'exhale' type effects from around 3:15 were a cool footnote to the vocals, great job
@LostBoy85 probably the best vocal performance I've ever heard from you, love the falsetto parts, and also the fact that you sing quite softly in a lot of the song, and only belt it out when you need the emphasis. It's great that you're still improving on an already very good vocal talent.
The piano in the song is very good, as well as the overall arrangement. The song is probably a little too saccharine for my tastes, but technically it's a stunning effort. Well done.
@MonzoPro it's got the usual madness but it's also got that pulsing tune/groove which makes it a lot easier for me to hook on to the tune. When I was younger I used to like getting stoned and zoning out to Locust Abortion Technician by the Butthole Surfers, this is like a more chilled and less mad (yes really) version of that experience.
And at the end it's almost quite pretty, which actually makes a powerful contrast to what came before.
So we have a tune, a groove, and some structure to go with the weirdness, for me that makes the whole thing gel a lot better.
@orchardman another tune with a classic feel, the vocals seem to get better each month and the songwriting also seems to be improving as time goes on. You must have enough material for an album by now
It's very accomplished, nice vocal melodies, excellent arrangement, and great playing. The vocal might be a bit thin sounding, could maybe do with some more warmth in the mix (and the lead guitar too), but then again it could just be the crappy headphones I'm listening on at the moment. Otherwise nothing else to criticise.
