@richardyot Great intro, loved the slightly off beat piano. The vocoder style vocals work really well. I'm not normally a big fan of this style (I remember nearly having a heart attack when Neil Young brought out the Trans album) but they are just right for this track. Only slight criticism is that I would have liked to here a little bit more of that acoustic guitar playing in the instrumental part at the end, but overall I think this track is right up there with the best stuff you have done so far.
@marliess thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you liked it.
@richardyot thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you liked it. Definitely working on that album will have to give the SOTMC a co-producer credit
Thanks Richard! I did a track with just the end bit, but it was a bit tame so got mixed in with the other madness.
I'll try and give feedback for any I've missed soon.
@theconnactic quirky and quite disjointed this one, I think the second half works better than the first for me. The track jumps very suddenly into the faster-paced section from the slower intro sections, and then back into the slower part with the eerie melody. The outro is my favourite bit, that has a lovely spooky feel to it, but the tune does leave me wondering a little what you were trying to say with it.
@crouchie really love this one, great choice of sounds and really interesting arrangement and composition. Vocal melody is top-notch, voice sounds great and doesn't need to go any higher in the mix!
The musical backing behind the voice works really well, and feels vey unusual and original to me, with the sparse sounds and the repeating synth sounds and almost FX-like patches.
Well...Same track from last month but with a new camera and some improvements in arrangements, hope you'll like it !
An odd month of real life in all its unreal circumstances, but just realized I am off early tomorrow morning to the Maine woods until October (where hopefully I will find another song hiding beneath rocks etc.). In the meantime here's some doggerel brought on, in part, by thinking about nurture vs nature (that old thing...).
Life in Fuckery
Little Cathy Vickery was born
in Fuckery and lived her life
in the middle of the suckery
where she fell beneath the sway
of some landed knobbery, even got
cut to help out with the snobbery
but then the joker got hoppity
and all on toppity, kept in with
the jiggery but never stopped to
figgery the cost of all his pokery
a baby made him jokery before he
got fidgety and turned into the
midgety, so she had the bastard
charged with unwanted buggery
receiving from villains and other
base thuggery, then she bore her
baby hoggily cursing men groggily:
"Listen my lovely daughtery this
is how it oughta be, before they
take their hoppery get a hold of
all their coppery and put it in
your pockery or they'll only make
a mockery of what was said before
the jumpery when they lusted
for your pumpery; remember for their
foolery there must always be first
jewellery." Wisely now was she in
the ways of the womanly,
little Cathy Vickery who was
born in Fuckery...
@LostBoy85 Beautiful song Leo. Ah man, your vocals are stunning. Pushing yourself has totally worked & your best vocal yet IMO. Four odd minute song with vocals & piano only. Oh & bass......sorry Dave. Takes guts but of course with your skills, qualities, you drew me in & kept me completely mesmerised by the gorgeousness of your vocal performance. Anyway, enough of me. Got back home from the match this evening with a few "old Manc mates" in tow. Long time etc. I whacked your tune through the speakers cos I'm way behind on reviews & let those lazy twats do some work. Their comments:
Sike - "Serene." Never heard such a gentle word from him. Huge compliment. You'll never melt him. Flame thrower maybe.
Salford John - "That lads got a good voice. When is he at the Apollo?" I take it he meant the Manchester variety & not space. He was getting awfully close to lift off mind.
Gibbo - "Nice. Now where's the ale landlord." Apart from singing Blue moon ALL day, they are the only words he muttered. You got a "nice." Again, well done....thumb up. He only has one. Long story.
Wife. And I will leave you with this one. "Lovely new song by Seal that, isn't it punkster?"
Yes it is dear.
My new favourite of yours, but don't tell that Moira Sky. I heard she's the jealous type.
@orchardman Enjoying your "upping of fuzz" here. Drives your classic sounding song through & adds another style to your repertoire. Still waiting for that "Banshees" bash
Any tune that begins with four hat clicks, warms my cockles. What sticks out rhythm wise, is the main beat. The snare sounds slightly behind the music. More noticeable in certain phrases & as I've mentioned this before, it has to be on purpose. Some well timed & sounding fills in that classic way. Can hear you're playing your guitar loud n proud. Contrasts the quieter verses to allow your wife to take over with her usual top of the class vocal display.
Are there any FX on her voice? Didn't feel as full this time although in no way detracted from this being a fine tune/listen. Decent weather is fading fast down here....time for another orchardman musical channeling sesh.
@theconnactic Another unique offering Dimitri. A master class of twisting, bending & chewing up new notes/chords into something new & exciting...obscure. There is always a tune, a structure to grab hold of but I love the way you play with that & travel down a musical direction that screws with what I'm expecting to hear. When you hoick the tempo up at 1.35, you took me into Rush territory. Brilliant playing & your timing for such complicated finger picking is spot on.
You continue pushing guitar boundaries & when you step over that line, (it seems, without breaking into a sweat) it is a joy to experience. One note of sadness from here...... I miss your title explanations.
@technemedia Hang on ere a minute! Is this @JohnnyGoodyear on the vox? If it isn't, please get together in the future & make a tune. Perfect fit to my ears. Could be very interesting & fruitful. Appreciating the laid back, cool underbelly of music. It's an infectious tune/groove that has ample breathing space, which accentuates the shwanky atmosphere it knocks out. Mixing skilfully worked. A bassy, more prominent vocal tone in the right ear & opposite in the left. Nice one sir
@crouchie Happy birthday Crouchie I hear & more importantly, FEEL that melancholy dripping from every beat, touch, word. Shame about the low tolerance levels with your own voice cos I'd love to hear it being poured into my ears from a yard of ale glass & not a sherry one Your lyrics & how you deliver them with such feeling, deserve it.
Musically, I'm fond of this stripped back you. Where's your pic gone by the way? Thank you for the pointer/reminder. I need to peel off some layers also. Think with this song, it works very well because your vocal & story should be the star. To get that desolate, sad feeling across in a song must be difficult. You've done it & congrats on that. If this is where you are heading, I'm looking forward to a winter of Crouchie wonders. Appears that you & Mr Modstep are becoming close friends. Nice combo.
OT. Good solid start for the Seagulls. No Barnsley or Burton for your boys next term. Things will get a lot easier with trips to places like OT.
I may have arrived in the wilds of Maine, far up here in the windy right bit of this big country, but I have brought my files with me and have added a note into yours....
@trackedout Identity. You have it in bucket loads. You'd only have to hear one of your tracks in the past to easily recognise one released in the future. Ta for the drum recording info. Just saw that. Thank you. Speaking of which, what drums were used on this song. Your bass riff & playing is already becoming an integral part of your signature sound & when you make it big, will be discussed in highfaluting musso circles for years to come.
Vocals could be higher in the mix but this is you. Do it your way. If you didn't want the words to be understood, fair play. Would I like to understand your songs story? Maybe but I don't really care. It's you & your music & how you want to create. That's what matters. The whistling at 1.40 is sublime & sends haunting shivers down my crooked spine.
Keep pushing hard. Terrific stuff
Hahahaha. Thought that may alert those reds up in Stephen King land. Enjoy your time there.
@marliess From "My Sherona" last time to My fat belly, in this outing. A lot lighter in feel but equally as heavy in terms of vocals. A compliment. Excellent job with the lyrics & particulary how you've delivered them. Lots of planning & thought must have gone into this. My favourite is how you say "guacamole." Fits in so well.
Enough praise for you sir. Of course, your daughter deserves the lions share of the applause. Nice one on getting the young ones involved & taking part in your craft. She will be advising you soon. Good luck with all that!
Relaxed, flowing music that has just enough funk feel to maintain the foot tapping throughout. Very good song highlighted by your daughters perfect piano playing.
Made this quick one yesterday. Put it together from start to finish in like 3 hours and didnt do any final mastering or anything like that on it(sounded crappy on iphone earbuds, but good on speakers and studio headphones):
Used poison 202, howl, impaktor and pow wow loops(funny free app with some native american loops) on ipad and alaturka drums and bias on computer. And ofc studiomux to route stuff to ableton.
@richardyot Hope those crazy circs have long been tamed. I did think for a moment that the dates corresponded with the derby defeat. A return to Kent may be required on 26 October. Talking crazy, the most off centre I've heard you. Not just vocally either. Love the vocoder effects, really effective on this song. No, I mean the structure of your piece. That country air does have a certain freeing up quality about its breath because this retains the loose feel, ease of journey but there's something different & very satisfying about this one. Can't put my finger on it but it does make me prod, poke, question & travel deeper inside to investigate.
Well done on getting this down without being able to use the comforts of a home studio (yeah, I saw the pic of all those lush mics) & deserves musical gold stars for that alone. My dark receptors particulary enjoyed how you delivered "And then they die" line. That resigned to the fact, deal with it, Hamlet cigar moment.
@JohnnyGoodyear So fuckery brilliant, King of wordery. A minute long, sad heart felt, dark story (not long enough), sang by a clever, original poet - ry. Don't know how you put all this power, through words, into 60 seconds but I'm always happy & waiting to take the punch. Think this is the first time listening to one of your songs that my uneducated arse hasn't needed a dictionary. I also detect remnants of your cocknery accent trying to fend off The States influence. That suited this story & lovely to hear it's still hanging in there.
Not so much music this month but in this case, as always, your words are your music.
Pure class, original, more fuckery please vicar -ry.
Jiggery pokery in a Lear-ish cacophony. Not really, good poem, like it.
I noticed that too - the owl and the pussycat go sailing down the Thames, via Tilbury.
@MonzoPro @Bluepunk I'll ave you both know that I was born in 'Ounslow and my old mum had me sent to electrocution lessons before I went to the big posh school because of it.
Many thanks Mr BP, on all fronts. V glad u liked the tune, am trying to keep to minimalism for a while. The Albion rewarded me by winning away with a last minute penalty on my birthday, and all beyond that is a bonus!
I have much thanking and reviewing to do. Am finding the monthly thing tough and so make it every other month for a bit. Hope the world is treating u well.
Oh yeah Crouchie... I'm a glad all over...... I will let the lads tell you in song form. Hope you manage to find some spare time from somewhere......anywhere.
Just my two humble cents at an attempt for constructive input: Over at the OP-1 forums, which also use this same vanilla website , they also host monthly "battles" that i use to participate. Everybody submits via their SC as you guys do here. But the previous month's winner who is hosting the current battle gathers or shares all of the submissions and curates a SC account which is dedicated to OP1 battles only. I guess the host gains temporary access as a mod because the OP1 battle SC player is embedded at the top of the thread.
I think this ensures that nobody's submission gets lost in between all of the feedback posts. Plus, what a more pleasurable listening experience, eh?! Not having to scroll. Honestly, I have no time and or lost my skill set as a song writer to partitipate, but when i go looking for new and inspirational music anymore, i tend to find gems at these type of friendly competitions. I've given up on labels and stuff, blogs, charts, ect. I'm semi-new here so please forgive me if I have over-looked something already in place, but skimming through some pages it all seems scattered.
@Blipsford_Baubie there is a SoundCloud account, which I curate, however I am currently in a weird situation in between houses, with my computer in storage and all I have is an iPad. For some reason I just cannot log to SoundCloud on my iPad, so for the time being I am unable to add the tracks to the SC account.
Ok, I found a way around the signing-in glitch, and have embedded this month's playlist in the second post.
Appreciate your ongoing administrative efforts Colonel, especially as you and your horde are living in a tent currently.
+1. Thanks gaffer.
Thanks Richard.
You look and sound like you're having fun, and an enjoyable track it is too. Just as well I don't shoot a video with mine though, not as impressive a setup as yours - it'd just be me in an armchair crouched over an ipad.
Good stuff.
I like this, obtuse rhtyms that brink to mind King Crimson - prog & bass? I'll have to checkout that native american thing too.
