IMHO:
Positive:
Frees up room for other tech.
Helps towards moisture protection.
Negatives:
Heightens the need for dongles with all that they bring (cost, loss, inconvenience etc).
Puts all wired connection eggs in one basket and all that brings (extra use pressure, no alternative if problems to socket, possible other issues of sharing so many duties from one socket).
Darn good rant Jakob! Also, the Havelock show? LOL.
No dice on the USB3 adapter theory. The lightning port on it is only for power.
Hah, funny stuff. Apple has a plan for the future so, hopefully, after an adjustment period it turns out to be a good one for everyone.
Please enlighten us as to this plan if you would be so kind.
I didn’t say I knew what the plan is. I’m saying they have one using common sense.
I think this sums it up nicely.
They removed an essential port.
Even if you just want to listen to music and not create anything it's #%^*ed up.
I always have to laugh when you say now go finger your stuff, I know it is going to come, but it doesn't get old
This video sums it up for me.
I only hope that Apple learns from the waves this whole thing makes on the net,
so they don't get any "wireless future bs" ideas about iPad.
Looks like they are already considering removing it from the MBP as well
OMFG
of course I use the headphone jack on my MacBook Pro daily
and I wanted to get a new one as soon as they are out
STOP THIS MADNESS !!!
PRO WITHOUT HEADPHONEJACK, THEY ARE FUCKING NUTS!
You know there's a free adaptor included right?
This is totally insane.
an adopter for the most basic function I use
What drugs are they on?
If they do this I am out. I've been a loyal customer for 16 years.
They can do with the phone whatever they want,
But not with my computers.
Well i dont care as long as there is a way to have a wired connection, because of zero latency and stuff.
I too use it daily though. I will look at it once it gets released and I need an upgrade. So far my Mid 2012 Pro is jogging along well.
I heard they're doing away with the touch screen next and replacing it with AppleGlasses.
I bought a standard MBP in 2012, rather than the retina as it had both a headphone socket, and a mic socket - rather than the retina all in one. Works a treat - I have a line in to the mic socket from my iRig, so I can record into Logic and the headphone socket connects to an external amp and speakers for monitoring.
Now they're actually considering removing the socket altogether, as if this is an actual good idea.
I'm not sure who they think their target market is, but they're doing a good job of removing me from it.
They should stop supporting Logic too, and their other pro software, and replace them with squeaky toy piano music apps and pictures of cats. This is what the market wants apparently, and they will ensure we get it, whether we want it or not.
I always asked myself a question why audio-interface manufacturers even create 'Input Only' or 'Output Only' devices as they already use integrated circuits they use most likely already include pins for both...
This is why I'm really puzzled over the Korg Plug-Key. It should have a Line-In and Midi-Out too...
I'm hoping IK makes a new 'smallish' product that has 3,5mm jacks for Headphone Jack, Audio In/out, Midi In/Out, USB-Passthru and Charging. The extra Headphone jack could be used as a optional audio-out making the device 2-In/4-Out...
For me 'charging' represents a well deserved break after using the device for extended period of time...
I love this forum! All comments are awesome and all of you brightened my morning. I'll be walking around with a silly smile all day! =D
I practice I would be covered with the CCK3 and Behringer UCA-202 if or when I decide to go for the 7.
Since I don't yet own the iRig Field Mic I don't know if the headphone jack on it also acts as a sound-card/dac?
(Does anyone here even own a iRig Field Mic???).
Apple should of made a dual port in the headphone adapter dongle. One for headphones, & one for charging. Probably, other companies will make this?
Of course, there will be more than you can count very shortly seeing as how that's the NUMBER 1 compaint about this change. I bet Belkin has something out next week in fact
My fear is they will go with a one socket approach on the new MacBook Pro series and shrink the hell out of it!
I don't know about yourself, but personally I want a pro laptop of the same size, but with more ports and a better battery. The MacBook 12 is fine for a shrunken laptop.
Obviously, I may be worried without cause, yet rumours seem to suggest they will shrink the MacBook Pro this time
Thanks Auxy for this comment on your app
Well its all valid points but consider this. There's a lot of people actually buying special DAC Adapters or Boxes to improve their listening quality even though their Android Devices still have a 3.5 Jack. I mean the adapter even ships with the iPhone7 so no need to buy it seperately.
I personally don't think its too bad, if you're serious about music you are most likely connecting some sort of audio interface/dock to your device anyway.
Where will they get common sense from ?
It seem like the best option at the moment for iPhone 7 going forward (and all other iOS devices when they change too) is usb using the CCK3
So you can use usb headphones and other peripherals and charge.
My iRig Pro comes with a usb connector so that should work through the CCK3 unless I'm mistaken.
So inadvertently Apple may end up pushing the usb standard more with this than lightning
Although I'm going off the idea of getting an iPhone again, so for me this may be delayed frustration.
That's it really. It's not "too bad". Neither is it ideal for many professional uses. The one socket for all approach was tried with early laptops because of port size vs case size. So manufacturers created single ports and breakout port solutions. Ok, so the current tech is different, yet the problems then are the same now. All eggs in one basket.
You know the gig mantra - if it can go wrong, it will go wrong at some point. One port solutions with breakout ports were hated back then. Now look at the logistics - small delicate port with breakout cables is a recipe for disaster. Apples cables are notorious for falling apart without much stress.
Now I can see that one cable going to a well built DAC that has all other ports included is a neat solution. But for gods sake put two lightning ports on the device so that one is a backup. Any Pro unit should have a backup solution!
Why care it's only a phone? Well I care because all the evidence so far suggests that Apples idea of 'Pro' can be quite a distance from many real professional scenarios. If the one socket solution is to be taken forward to the 'Pro' devices, then that distance will be getting much greater.
Only time will tell. I personally won't just say that Apple know what they are doing. Yes they know how to make money. They know how to design well for the consumer / designer market. I don't think the professional needs will be high on the agenda when they decide that they can make more money from those that want plush design over professional needs.
I'm just curious if the 'adapter' also works with the iPad Air 2?
If it does, how does it compare to the built-in 3,5mm jack?
I somehow feel that the output from the Lightning->3.5mm jack will be 'hotter' than the built-in jack and thus be more capable of driving headphones that need more juice...
(Currently the 3,5mm jack on the lightning dock has more juice than the one that is built-in on my iPhone 5).
They are trying to remove it from the Macbook pro, but looks like it might be safe for now...
