Rotor is eclipsing Reactable for me, except for some small differences like the drawable waveforms in Reactable synths, and the big difference of additional objects (doubling everything you'd want) that came with Reactables bundle IAP. Hopefully Rotor will do a bundle too.
Speaking of adding control objects, Rotor got me to re-up Genome...and this got me wondering if Rotors objects have hidden CCs, they do already receive more than just not on-off...
I was quite sure I didn't need ROTOR as others, I hadn't used Reactable app in quite a while but I was intrigued enough to observe reactions and things got quite serious when I saw the quality of the manual for ROTOR. That alone deserved my investment Anyway, now I am in and WOW this really is so so good. I created a little something for you to listen to...
This is great
Sweet!!!
I think once they update it for easy import in of samples, folks are gonna be kicking themselves for not snatchin' this up while it was at launch price.
Thought the little pucks were dumb at first, but now I'm looking forward to how much they'll cost. Might good holiday stocking stuffers.
@Trueyorky
Cool track - it's fun listening to you doing the fun stuff!
You're right about the manual, it's quite amazing, the exact thing people here on the forum are wishing for (and usually not finding) when they buy into a deep application. Incredible to be in-app, reading thorough and lively tech writing - which by itself is much appreciated - and then have embedded playable and tweakable examples and projects, I'm feeling a little spoiled..
This strikes me as a killer feature:
ROTOR provides real-time automatic tonality detection features not available in any other iOS app. ROTOR analyses loops on the fly for extracting their key/tonality, and combines with its time-stretching/pitch shifting capabilities, for guaranteeing that all simultaneous loops and wavefiles will always in sync and in key between them.
Does it work as well as it sounds on paper (screen)?
It does. It's actually one of the most impressive aspects I've found with this app, ie. just how well and accurate it does work.
The ROTOR folks via Twitter told me that it will also work with our imported samples when they update to include import via general audiocopy, as well as other methods.
@Littlewoodg @skiphunt @Ivan_Dj thanks for your feedback
Just tested the tonalizer with a couple of loops and played some synth lines in the mix. Yes, works really well. Awesome stuff.
Thanks @skiphunt. That tonalizer sounds like a neat trick!
Well, I bought it.
I didn't really use it but I got thinking I want to know what this is about.
Now what? LOL
Look forward to the challenge.
Think that this may ferment till update.
My guess is you will dig it, you've got Reactable going on and you're a Genome fan if I recall correctly...Rotor with Genome via Audiobus is pretty huge
I'm a Genome fan too, but isn't redundant with the built in sequencers? I'm not doubting you, but curious how you're using then together.
I'm still interested in this, but without any way to import without iTunes I'm unsure if it's worth the risk.
@Fruitbat1919 to get things going I dragged in a load of my sample folders through iFunbox. You can also record into ROTOR from AudioBus and use those audio files inside the app. It will be better when (if) other options are added but this works really well.
I rarely have access to a computer, so input has to come from my ipad
@Fruitbat1919 yeah, me too but I loaded in plenty to keep me going for a while
Think I will wait. I'm eyeing up PhaseMaker instead
which folder did you load them into, my rotor folder is blank in ifunbox?
@kobamoto doing this from memory but have you audio recorded any sessions inside ROTOR ? If so look where those files are in iFunbox and drop into there. You should also see the pre-loaded samples.
haven't recorded anything yet, will try and maybe the folders will show up
You people that bought it and use it and read the manual, how important is the "SOON to arrive" "puck" controller for this app in terms of functionality?
Are the pucks a deal breaker?
Can you use the app without pucks to the same extent, even if it's more complicated?
I don't think they will be 4.99 a piece...
App is really interesting though...
Yes they aren't necessary at all but will just add to the experience. it can be a little fiddly changing the rotary controls and I think it'll make it more fun and fluid. I really wish they added midi learn though too but maybe they want to sell more pucks so won't add it.
THANKS @Carnbot , sounds good....and it's a very impressive app
@soundklinik I seem to be getting used to swiping and twisting in the right places. All good here
Thanks, sounds like a fun learning process....glad to hear that it's possible without
Cheers
.....hard to resist such an interesting and quality app...bought it and dove into the tutorials...
All looks so polished... manual and tutorials, videos ...WOW..these guys really did their homework...
I agree
What is the easiest way to get started to "Get" this app?
NOTE: I HAVE REACTABLE and ENJOYED IT FOR MAKING LOOPS BUT NOTHING REALLY OUTSTANDING. I GET THE CONCEPT IN SOME ASPECTS but am wondering on how to approach this animal.
If anything, this looks like a cool community building type app just by the friendly helpful nature on this thread. This looks like a "Fun" app as opposed to nose to the grindstone MIDI channel quantizing pitch control ultra parameter controlling sequence triggering template work horses that are many other apps I use.
That is the main reason I bought ROTOR plus several people I know and/or respect vouch for the app on here in this thread.
Im using Genome to add more sequencing, with Audiobus hosting to make screen flipping easier. I find 2 sequencers aren't always enough (the sample players can do some very interesting things with sequencers, especially the Free running ones, and the fx objects parameters also can do tricks with sequencing.) Objects also respond to velocity info via midi, (and maybe CCs I haven't delved) and Genome has the nice curves for that.
In truth my go-to, Modstep, might be as good or better, Iwill try that. Will check in here after some trials
One Genome feature I've had fun with in Rotor sessions is Genomes live looping/glitch function on sequenced tracks, another live play surface to add to the ones in Rotor.
The Audiobus hub also can flow audio into that Rotor input object, so Genomes own synth or drum synth can be a sound source, sequenced from Genome. Or Modsteps onboard sampler or synth, and or IAA or AU stuff could flow in, hmmm...
The real reason for the extra apps is I got used to more sequencers and sound sources in Reactable, and I'm not clever enough to do what I like with what's in-app. If there's an IAP for additional objects (the way there was in Reactable) I'll probablay tone down the multiapp workflow.
You can? How do you do that? Using the record button just saves to the iTunes file sharing. I didn't know you could record samples into Rotor and then use them right off without having to transfer them via iTunes sharing. Are you sure?
