Will we able to load your Live Set House Samples ?
I'm really looking forward to it!

Yes, but it might be some time before I finish the set. Having a bit of writer's block combined with trying to prep for a move back to Seattle from Luxembourg in a few weeks. Sorry!

So, I'm curious. I think the idea of the Circuit is brilliant, and it looks like great fun. My question is how much sound design is actually possible with just the Circuit, standing alone (i.e. no editor on a laptop, etc. -- JUST the Circuit). When the iPad works for music it's amazing but it can be frustrating...and of course, it just doesn't have the same feel as hardware.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Having no up to date computer, I couldn't install the circuit editor, so quickly got bored with the standard patches. I have now incorporated a mixture of hardware and software by using the circuit to control my favourite iOS synths alongside my other hardware and for me it's worked out bang on. The circuits macro knobs mapped to the iOS synths gives obviously far more predictable results than the standard internal sound mappings.
    I love it!

  • Is it possible to connect the ipad directly to a Circuit (via CCK) and use the TouchOSC template to edit the synth engine further than what's available on the Circuit itself?

It can be both instantly pleasing and hugely frustrating at the same time....as you are working blind from the parameters you are adjusting you cannot plan a sound, you can (and regularly do) happen across a sound.
Over time you will learn each individual patch and what the controls do to that sound, but that is a pretty long process.
So, if you have a sound in your head and you want to make it, it will be very difficult, if however you have a tune in your head and no idea of what sound to use it is pretty quick and easy to find one.

Thank you -- that last part I think indicates it's not for me. I always start with the sound, and enjoy building/creating/designing sounds. Too bad.

I wish they would make a sampler Circuit. :D

what's good Pt, I'm keeping my eye on this one, price wise it's in between octa and electribe, check the rest of the clips on their channel

Yes, if not a bit fiddly. You can only edit 2 patches per song and those patches can't be used in other songs unless you recreate them. I got fed up of all that, hence using mine as a controller for my iOS synths.

Mmm, I saw that! But what can you do to them? :)

Pitch, sample end, distortion/drive, and hi-lo filtering. It's basic, but greatly expands what you can do with the little box.

I had fun enough with it to now be considering a volca sample.

After buying the Circuit am trying to keep a close eye on myself not to fall into the hardware pit :), in terms of the Volca Sample (which does look fun) is there no app or combination of the same that does similar/variants etc of this?

ModStep using its internal sampler ?

Or BeatMaker2 with a load of samples loaded in.

Or Bilbao in Gadget (to which it seems very similar).

Yah I hear BM3 is going to be pretty sweet too. I just like no screen and knobs etc. Just a toy really.

Or.... the new version of KRFT when it comes out of beta. It has sample input.

  • Ok you Circuit-loving, -liking, -tolerating bastards, I've got questions (like not in the manual questions). :) As always, thanks in advance for any responses!

    • can the sequencer send out MIDI CC data? (Eg to control/sequence iOS synths). If so, which ports - MIDI break outs or USB?

    • Can the knobs transmit MIDI cc data? (E.g. To control iOS synths). If so, which ports - MIDI break outs or USB?

    • How's the battery life in real life use? Buy lots of batteries or good rechargeables?

    • Sample memory amount (not time)? I know you can try and use tricks to extend it, but just looking for "base" amount.

    • Sample manipulation parameters - Are they per step? Parameter lock/per step automation like synth part?

  • edited February 2017
    • Yes, out of both ports. Synth 1 is fixed to channel 1, synth 2 is channel 2, and drums are channel 10.

    • Yes, both.

    • With a new set of Duracells I get about 7-10 hours of use I'd guess, never really timed it exactly.

    • About 6MB. All samples are converted to mono too.

    • They can be per step. Step Automation is more like Korg than Elektron. IE, if you change a parameter from one step to another, you need to manually change it back on the following step. Same with sample flipping. If you have kick on step 1, and then record a flip so it's a snare on step 2, it will stay on the snare sound until you record another flip back to the kick.

  • One last one (ha!): I asume it's possible to use the pads to play external synths via MIDI? (Gotta love that scale mode!)

Thank you thank you, T! Hope Novation are taking notes. :)

    Yes sir.

  • I hope-pose that this means we'll be getting full patch editing and randomization on and from the hardware itself + an iOS editor?

Nice :).......Components iOS would be good to have too.

  • Update to the Components site just dropped too. New Packs, and now you can delete and rename your saved pack too.

Wahey - often wondered why this wasn't possible

  • Yeah, it was much needed!

  • WTF? Registration is required :s I'm so tired to create an account just to get access to a free tool. I'll stay with the online version using my Google account.

I have been looking at my Circuit lately and just seeing the rest of the money I need for an iPad Pro.... "Hey there Circuit... Not using you much lately... got tired of booting the old PC up to load you with samples and patches... Sure be nice if you played better with the iPads... maybe Novation could make an iOS app? ...or maybe I just convert you into a new iPad... Hey there Circuit..."

I do wonder why as regards Novation/Circuit/iOS app etc....

  • there's still hope, they started out with the whole purpose of the circuit as being something easy to use and sketch down music but ended up with the beatmachine with the least accessibility, even the knob assignments were a mystery but there is still time to make every aspect of the circuit adhere to the original ease of use concept.

but look at iOS, how many times have you heard someone say they left Macs and pcs behind cause they didn't want to be bothered with all of the shenanigans only to move over to iOS and start jumping through more hoolahoops than a hoolahoop competition :D

I would just love to use the Circuit on the train more. I have room for my Circuit and iPad mini but not Circuit and laptop. :(

If you happen to pick up the VST/AU/Standalone Editor you get a great Lemur Editor along with it. Did anyone else happen to catch that you can do Program Change for Synths 1&2? Drum Selection on Ch. 10 with CC 8,18,44,50 (Drums 1-4).

With the VST Editor you expose 127 Circuit parameters within Ableton too (Options.txt etc) - much possible with this addition!

  • Make head brain very tired.

  • Did an article about the VST Editor & how to extend control with it & Controlers like LCXL / BCR2000 etc: https://aud-ios.com/2017/04/24/circuit-midisynth-editor-take-full-control/

  • Firmware 1.5 out today with a feature that reminds me of this scene from a similarly titled classic
