  • I've been getting in depth with Turnado recently. Although not inside Auria (as my work is primarily live) I'm looking forward to having a chance to get in depth with it there and have a proper play. I have a plan for this.. For a while I've been developing and arranging repertoire for my ethno project UDAGAN, and now as the tracks are starting to come together, I'm planning to record all my instrumental parts into Auria and then hit play tweak my Turnado patches to ecstasy.

    Anyway, I digress..
I've been scouring the web for any available insight into it and I spotted that on this site is almost three hours (combined) of Turnado and WOW2 tutorials:
    https://www.groove3.com/Sugar-Bytes-training-video-tutorials/Turnado-Explained
    https://www.groove3.com/Sugar-Bytes-training-video-tutorials/WOW2-Explained

As well as this, there are various tutorials for Fabfilter plugins available on iOS.
    https://www.groove3.com/FabFilter-training-video-tutorials

If you can get through that in a month, the monthly fee of $15 seems very reasonable indeed! I'm not going to put my time into those Fabfilter tutorials (I haven't purchased them as of yet as I primarily use Auria Pro for tracking/editing) but I may well 'byte' for the two others above as well as a few general production series (just as soon as I finish reading the manuals..)

Good find. That is an in-depth video there.
And what an excellent way to avoid actual music-making! I'm doing research! ;)
There don't seem to be any iOS-specific tutorials on the site. There's an Auria tutorial on Lynda.com, but it's pre-Auria Pro. Still, you can get a free trial on Lynda to see how you like it, and you could probably finish it then.

I do know that I would pay good money (decent money, let's say) for a step-by-step tutorial on Modstep and Auria ....

yeah, this is the biggest issue with all of these things. trying to figure things out, many moving parts, on our lonesomes. ableton, logic, most hardware, has tons of tutorials, shit's been sorted out.

  • Okay, I bought Pro-MB and Timeless 2 (so far) and am enjoying my early dabbles. One thing is puzzling me. When I select a preset for a track in Pro-MB, then switch back to main view I'm assuming the setting stays as selected. Yet, if I switch to another app, then back to Auria Pro which is still in memory, the setting for Pro MB preset has returned to default. Am I missing something?

Timeless 2 does that as well.

  • The preset is still there, only the name of it is not displayed anymore.

  • Thanks, guys. Hopefully this slightly confusing issue will be dealt with in an update.

Don't hold your breath - I reported this over a year ago and told a fix was 'imminent'.

It's surprised me, for quite pricey high end apps - by IOS App Store standards - how little there is by way of quality demos for Volcano 2 in YouTube land. L-o-a-d-s of stuff by 'experts' who want to talk about it, but spend less than a minute actually showing what it sounds like.

The most useful and informative, predictably, was an old SoundTestRoom demo from Doug Woods. But I still can't make up my mind how much I'd use the app.

Have you checked out the videos on the Fab Filter site? I found them very helpful. Though, I don't see one for Volcano specifically. I'm pretty sure I saw one for Volcano there though... but it may have been one of the tutorials for a technique and not for Volcano specifically.

Yes, there is a Volcano demo, but it's one if those where the presenter talks about it without actually doing much with it. No worries. Have now decided that as I can't find anything that fills me with inspiration, I'll save my credits.

Very pleased with Pro-MB and Timeless 2, though, which suit my workflow well. :)

I got more iTunes credit than I was anticipating.. but I think I'm good for now and it'll have to be burning a hole in my digital pocket I reckon. ;) Might get Timeless 2, and was toying with Saturn before the sale ends, but I'm pretty flush with new apps at the moment.

Timeless 2 is great. For video demos I check out the desktop plugin versions as they're more or less the same: https://www.youtube.com/user/fabfilter/videos

  • Got myself a $75 iTunes gift card, and I'll be sinking it all into FabFilter IAPs.

Do you have Pro-Q 2? I'm looking at that and wondering how well it works with Pro-MB.

  • Please excuse my ignorance in these matters, but are these the same Fabfilter plugins as the Auria Pro IAP’s? How can I tell they are 25% off (I see no indication if it)? Do these Fabfilter plugins go on sale regularly or is this unusual?

    Very much thanks!

Yes they are the auria IAps, usually only on sale once a year. They are all good. ProQ 2 almost essential compared to other eq once you try it. SAturn, timeless, volcano all great too

  • Thank you kindly Mr. Lullaby, 25% off is a substantial savings!

Grabbed Timeless 2. Made a little unimpressive marimba loop as a test, then started playing with running it through Timeless 2. Wow! Easily turned something nearly embarrassing into a very strange and beautiful lushness. Definitely lives up to the hype.

Toying with gettIng Saturn or Volcano too before the sale is over.

Leaning more toward Saturn I think.

I've got Pro-Q-2. It's good, but I rarely use it. I find most in-app sounds are already as good as they can be, and my attempts at EQ-ing only make things worse. I did struggle with it once to take a high pitched noise out of a track but just couldn't do it. More of a reflection on my skills though - I'm more of a bass and treble kinda guy, all this stuff about shelves is beyond my DIY skills.

Thanks, MonzoPro. That's very helpful. I am already getting great results from Pro-MB and was considering Pro-Q-2. But having read your post I'm thinking that it's even more of a specialist tool. Too clever for me to get the best out of it, without devoting much time I'd rather spend making music in the first place.

  • Eq is best used subtlety when adding frequency imo. I find that these kind of eq are best used when you need to cut out an annoying frequency or rolling off the lower and or upper frequency..

I'm no expert but a few YouTube tutorials on eq can be very helpful

It's a lovely interface, but you need to know what you're doing as it's easy to make things worse. The UI looks dead easy to use, but I've been unable to fix issues with sounds when I've tried to do so.

Without wanting to attract the wrath of the Auria fanboys, I'd add that this is my personal view, and one from someone who doesn't know what he's doing with this type of thing. I'm sure in the right hands it's an essential tool.

  • Just had a very enjoyable hour playing my guitar through some of the presets in Timeless and Saturn, absolutely tons of fun, great quality sound.

Picked up Thm overloud, Pro Q 2 and Pro C 2 as well ( these last two look like they could take some getting used to, but I've not had time to take more than a quick look.)

Well worth the money imo, could have even saved me money if I'd bought these prior to some other apps.

Saying that , I'm now wondering if I really need both kidneys or would Volcano and Drumagog be more useful lol

Very nice! I picked up Timeless, Saturn, Pro-Q 2 and Pro-C 2 as well (and, like you, I'm a guitarist). I'm not sure how useful Volcano would be to me for guitar work, but I suppose it'll make its way into my arsenal eventually. The UI for these plugins is just too tasty to pass up.

Uhmed and ahhd a lot, watched dozens of videos, most clearly aimed at those who are already experts, and concluded that Pro-MB, Timeless 2, Volcano 2 and Saturn are all I'm able to handle. I understand what they can do, and feel I can get my head around using them.

The rest, while undoubtedly fine apps, are higher than my brain grade. And, as has already been suggested, incorrect use could make things worse. So, not for me.

Just got these last night too. Hooked up ipad to my Yamaha AV unit thru the Infinity 70s speakers and was truly blown away.

    It's just that good

  • Wow, this thread completely snuck by me. But since the sale is still going, and I'm an Auria user who owns all the FF stuff except Volcano (because I did some research and decided I don't need it), here's my penny and a half:

Pro-Q2 - essential. Even if you love the PSP channel strip EQ, which I do. But when it's time to get mixing, Q2 covers all the bases, and is very noticeably better, than any other EQ solutions out there I've seen on iOS.

Pro-C2 - only played with this a couple times so far, as I agree with earlier comments regarding the quality of the PSP channel and buss compressors included in Auria.

Pro-G - a very nice noise gate that works as advertised.

Pro-MB - nice, versatile, and a total resource hog on my Air 1. Should be noted it handles Expansion as well. I used a targeted expansion technique to make a repeating tom line really come to life.

Saturn - not much I can say that hasn't already been mentioned. Everything from warming up a cold vocal to creating sulfuric bar chords with a guitar, and lots and lots of presets in between. You can even use it to get pitched feedback on your guitar tones - very handy in the virtual amp world.

Timeless - I once made a bell synth preset (FM synth, I think) sound like rain. If that sounds at all appealing, there's your ticket. I actually prefer PSP Echo because it's so easy to use and is a thing of beauty, but when it's time to get trippy, Timeless has trippy in spades.

Pro-DS - once I learned how handy De-essers can be in a Mastering chain, this app started doing double duty, one instance per vocal bus, another on the main buss for mastering. Essential for me.

And what some say is the best limiter out there, Pro-L. It includes a K-meter so you can see how far into the infamous loudness wars you've waded. It is the cat's meow AND the cat's pajamas. Plus, with the ease of automation across their whole line, it's so nice to drop it down in quiet parts and ramp it up a bit for choruses and big endings. For me, Pro-L is the most indispensable of them all.

  • Thanks for those rundowns, @eustressor. Can you go into more detail on how you manage to get pitched feedback from Saturn? I can see how this could come in handy for me.

I haven't tried anything like that... but just with headphones via the iPad it sounds so good, rich, and lush... doesn't have that typical thin iOS sound. Sounds closer to what I hear coming from the desktop in Logic Pro. Thought maybe it was an aural trick or just my imagination/wishing thinking.

I was a skeptic, but now I'm definitely picking up one more. For a non-guitar-playing, or any instrument for that matter... sound mangling twiddler... do I go for Volcano or Saturn?

Wait... I already downloaded the desktop demos for Logic from the FabFilter site... forgot about that... might was well take them both for a spin and see what seems like the best fit. :)
