First of all, DAW point upgrades usually spend months in beta -- I think Live 9.5 was in beta for four months, 9.6 was in for three? And the base Live 9 platform has been out for nearly 4 years now. Those were just point upgrades -- redesigned instruments, tweaked workflow, new integration. Korg is launching a new-ish, full-ish DAW on a new platform. Audio recording for the first time? That's a lot bigger than a redesigned sampler.

I'd also imagine there's a fair bit of work involved with the AU/VST conversion for 30+ diverse instruments, plus compatibility testing with the new OS and cross-compatibility testing with both OSes, plus bug testing for the new sharing platforms. And there's also ReWire to build in and bug test for the first time, and there's the challenge of multi core x86 CPU optimization, and testing with common and uncommon audio interfaces because you don't want it to trip over someone's fifteen year old FireWire drivers.

Plus managing development resources with whatever other digital products they have on the go. Plus "general" marketing to Ableton and Logic users that don't know about iPad instruments, and sorting out their licensing requirements, and anti-piracy because it's easier to crack software on MacOS. Plus behind the scenes things that I don't even know about because I'm not a developer.

And the pressure of launching a "finished" product in this day and age -- you can always fix software with updates now, but you can't always repair your reputation if you get bad launchday reviews. And there's also the risk of setting a launch day and missing it because something doesn't work right -- that's bad for business, too.

Edit: haha this came across a lot more aggressive than I meant it to. I'm not a grouch! I just typed a long post on my phone! My point is that there's more involved in porting software than just flipping a switch, and I think a several-month-long "hype window" is reasonable. We're not used to it because major iOS apps tend to drop unexpectedly -- they go from rumour to release seemingly overnight (Moog and Korg are great for this). Desktop software, on the other hand, usually gets formally announced months in advance.

  • I have a pretty good feeling we'll get our first proper look at Gadget for Mac sometime in the next 24 hours...

I got very excited for a brief second when I went I seen another update for Korg Gadget on my App Store updates this morning until I realised it was yet just another minor update for bugs.Arrrggg! :) Korg are teasing us with all those minor updates like teasing a dog with a bone.

  • It's so super rude of Korg to push out these incremental 2.9.x updates while everyone is waiting for 3.0 :D

  • They just demoed audio recording with a guitar. Recording over a 6 part song from start to finish and the audio was automatically added to the Rosario Gadget for each part of the song (i.e. cut into the 6 parts of the song).

Now they do the same for vocals.

  • This looks awesome... Cannot wait to do that on my iPad ;-)

This would suggest that re-arranging already recorded parts may cause issues if the parts have tails that go beyond the end on the scene.
I wonder if there will be an audio editor to allow for chopping the tail of a previous part from the beginning of the following part.
If not then this may be a bit like automation recording where you really want your arrangement in place and flat (i.e no scenes that repeat) before you start recording.
It should be fine if your audio fits inside a single scene.

  • Now they are showing Gadgets as plugins in Cubase on the Mac. I wonder what the price will be, seems like a very nice addition to any setup, with all 31 gadgets as VST/AU plugins - a lot of sound for the price (whatever it will be).

But should make the Gadget App interesting even for musicians using other DAWs

  • And its all over...

  • I caught the end with the woman singing...

  • If we can use these gadgets with Audiobus or AUM.... <3

Yeah... it seems to me recording direct into Gadget sounds like a bit of faff if it artificially chops every 16 bars (or whatever length your scenes are set to).

I guess if its a sparce rap, some twiddles on a trumpet or something similar then it might be ok because you could rearrange scenes - but anything more continuous you'll get the issues you mention if you try rearranging scenes.

I don't see myself recording directly into Gadget (why would you?). I see myself recording into AUM / Audioshare and then prepping stuff into 16 bar sections and then dropping them into scenes in Gadget to be further arranged.

    I think :)

  • In the video they definitely overlapped sections when recording, but then again they did not re-arrange after ;)

    I think :)

I don't think it will be perfect, but it is definitely better than no audio, I tried the AUM route, but that suffers from different arrangement issues, as in your audio stays fixed in time so doesnt move when re-arranging at all.
Both scenarios would require a re-recording after a re-arrangement, but at least with Gadget you will have a 'draft' of what the final audio will be like while re-arranging.

I'm now wondering about the sample management, is it destructive ? If i record 6 16 bar scenes, and then delete the middle 3, will I still have all 6 scenes audio loaded and wasting space ? or will the audio for the scenes be managed individually and deleted if I clear that part or delete the scene ?

    So many questions....LOL

  • So are we there yet?

  • I think just being able to loop audio in a convenient way is a good starting point.

  • In the magic Japanese video, did they bother to say WHEN and HOW MUCH?

  • I keep getting an error message on every Darwin track anyone has a fix?

  • Korg just said on Facebook they're announcing more information tomorrow.

"More information." Be still my heart. Dollars to donuts we're gonna get rickrolled. Again.

  • We gotta keep the hype train rolling. No brakes
