If you're considering non-analog mono's at this point, it's been at least two months since I recommended the Novation X-Station 25 to anyone. So it's about that time. The X-station is a nice little VA plus you get all of the MIDI controller/MIDI interface/Audio interface benefits. You can find them used for well under your price range. Can probably still sneak a Meeblip in for under budget.
I've demoed a few and came away really liking the Waldorf Pulse 2 but not the most hands on interface. I've had a mopho for a few years and i can still coax new and interesting sounds out of it so i'd get something you like the tone of with enough depth for programming your own patches.
My biggest regret in life is selling my x-station 49.
Just in case anyone forgot what an organ sounds like.
edit: Just in case anyone forgot what an organ can sound like.
After having owned, and sold, Juno 1, mc202, Moog Prodigy, Korg Prophecy, Novation KS5, DX7, I'm - strangely - very happy with just a Microkorg. And a Novation Circuit, that I can't manage to get attached to, because of the sound and the lack of pitch bend.
love the microkorg true classic. not many synths with a continuous production run of 15 years plus
.
If anyone hasn't already seen it (by my last count, almost the entire world's population has viewed it from start to finish at least a few times) I mention the Microkorg S in my latest WTFKnobs on iM1 DWGS waves.
Pioneer is releasing an analog synth designed by Dave Smith, announced at NAMM.

Doctor, do you have anything for a bad case of GAS???1!11eventy1
Much as I admire Ray Manzarek's playing, his organ sounded like crap. I heard Rick Wakeman say the same recently. Listen to Jon Lord to hear what an organ should sound like.
Nice playing, not a huge fan of the clean organ though.
Jon Lord yes....but it was the doors and Manzarek that made me get into organs in the first place
Without any hesitation: Korg Monologue.
Not as sweet as Bassstation (which is a big plus), and has more versality as the Microbrute. Basssounds can sound so huge, fx so creative. Very, very fast envelope. Oh, and a sequencer with really good sounding slides! LFO in audio rate (this is more important than to have 2 x LFO, imho, which can have VERY drastic and innovative sound sculpting effect (on waveshape, pitch or cutoff), even lots of vocal sounding sounds are possible (with the usage of this high frequency LFO). Velocity. Oh, and even as an effect unit for external audio (drumloops etc.) the Korg Monologue is pure dope.
It is a classic. I cant't rave enough for the Korg Monologue.
P.S.
Korg Monologue has 100 user memories
Agreed- absolutely. I have mine now- and it is proving to be the essence of a liquid analogue palette whose sonic atoms unite to dance majestically together in wonderful plane of untamed synchronicity. It is also user friendly in many ways. It does not matter so much about the lack of a ribbon gate controller as I mentioned earlier- as you can assign the slider control to gate time.
I was looking to pickup a synth or controller too but i bought a strat
Well i think I have made my decision....
My initial requirements changed during my deliberation....I still want something to play live, but I now want Polyphonic and also more than 25 keys.
My reasoning for these changes were down to me really thinking about what I am trying to achieve and how a new piece of kit would help and I realised I only have 25 key controllers so 37 keys brings something new, more would be better but space is a limiting factor, hence me now accepting mini keys, and if I'm going to play on three octaves I will be using both hands again, and not my right as I would on 25 keys which means polyphony now becomes important.
It was a close run thing in the end and I had a great journey checking out all the bits of kit people recommended.
My final decision was between Yamaha Reface YC and Novation Mininova......and I am going for Mininova. The YC sounds amazing but I didn't want to be limited to 1 type of sound (albeit a great one) These were closely followed by the Reface DX.
My main reasons for choosing Mininova are that it has the performance controls which look perfect for the type of thing I will be doing.
It uses a bigger version of the same synth engine that circuit has, which I initially used as a reason to rule it out, but I have come to realise that I can use Mininova as a sound designer for circuit (as long as I only use the parts of the synth engine that circuit has) meaning I will get more out of circuit too.
I think a mono synth would have been nice but ultimately not as useful.
Thanks for all your input on this.
also, don't know if it was mentioned already, check out the yamaha an1x. i have had about 3, can be found for 300ish. great sounds. very playable keys and responsive knobs.
For this price range Korg Minilogue is about the best you can do for something with polyphony and keys, as opposed to a module. I have one and I love it. Can't really beat it for the price.
Got lucky, and I got a brand new Roland JD-Xi for €395.
With the new Patchbase editor for iPad it's very potent/versatile it could be a killer.
Haven't completely got my head around it, but it looks very promising in a mobile setup.
Will be back in a couple of days with my findings. Should anyone be interested.
And is of course red, as these will be invaluable when they get cult status.
Can the mininova be used to directly manipulate the sounds on the circuit (beyond the 8 macros)? If so, seems a no brainer. If not, seems like it could be pretty redundant, sonically. Though the performance controls are indeed very cool.
I'm not sure what the Mininova will send out CC and NRPN wise when editing sounds yet, or if it is able to dump all values out over MIDI....but if I stick to the wave forms available in circuit, and the 2 OSC's, 3 Env's and 2 LFO's I will be able to design a sound hands on using the Mininova, and then port that sound over to the circuit using the editor (or my Lemur Template)
The Mininova will add sonically because of what it has over and above what the circuit does....More waveforms, 3 OSC's, 6 Envelopes, 3 LFO's , additional FX as well as the performance pads, ARP and vocoder of course.
Just a small tip: Dont create patches with 2-3 oscillators having large difference in volume. JdXi resets the volume from all oscillators to one common value ,so whenever you tweak the volume knob the patch will sound different .
It was one of the main reasons I sold it.The other was the lack of acoustic sounds, most of them are dance oriented. Also the analog synth engine was not big enough. (I also have a Casio XW G1, not portable but way better on features )
But I am sure you will enjoy it I really liked the workflow, creating sounds and rhythms very fast. I don't think there is any other portable synth with 3 synth engines and dedicated drum sequencer .
@Korakios XW-G1 is a sleeper. Casio US seemed to realize what they had on their hands (apparently, it just landed on them from Japan, no heads up) but couldn't quite break the mold of what folks already had in mind when they thought of Casio. Wish they'd double down on the good parts, fix up the OS/UX a bit and give it another go.
The OS part is dark art!
@kobamoto great video you found. Thanks for sharing! Was looking for months an Alesis ION (which is hard to find with full working encoders) but this video totally changed my mind!
Yeah, wow. That sounded amazing. Wish it was all straight minilogue though. From the creator:
It's hard to know how much of an influence that stuff is having.
You may get 3 iPads for the price, but still beautiful

Mininova still a good choice, have fun with it (I do !!!! )
