When the Alchemy excitement dies down, let's talk about

    "Multi- take Recording" :o

I know that will be a welcome feature for many

This! Assuming it means what I think it means. A God-send for recording solos.

How does multi - take recording work? I recorded twice over a section, but can only see and hear the most recent take.

You have to toggle it. In the track settings. It applies to all tracks when toggled.

Two more things would really do it for me

    1) mute clips
    2) AU send effects (right now seems to be insert only)

Probably will have to wait for NAMM 2018.

  • Nice to see progress but no Link yet. But for the iphone this is pretty cool.

I'm in love with the looks of the Logic update, and had a great time last night running through my old projects with it. It's finally not choking on one of my projects which has a lot of Tempo shifting automation. The Logic Remote is very stable now too.

I'd like to try GB again, but I hate selecting instruments by flipping through that carousel view. I'll try it though. For whatever reason I prefer recording guitar on iOS.

  • Someday live clips will be midi mappable... ?

  • GarageBand is so awesome when I use the internal instruments, I really love the combination of clip launching + linear timeline + song sections, but once I load in a bunch of AUs my iPad Pro 9.7 starts to struggle with it, it's probably worse now than before the update. I know the big iPad has got double the RAM but this feels like the AU integration was tested on iPads not sold yet. Slightly disappointing.

Maybe it's a particular AU? Which ones are you using?

I tested this out, works pretty well. But it seems to create a long list of blank takes (in addition to the real takes). Surprising to see an Apple product have a bug like this.

I've been using Poison 202, iSEM and Viking since the update and getting messages like "This song may have too many active Live Loop cells to play properly on your device" with only 2 loops, and also "Audio Units extension quit"

I know I must be missing something, but I don't seem to have any option to toggle multi-take in track settings.

Wrong menu, try the 'mixer' icon.

    Got it. Thanks!

  • I must say the Logic update is really huge and a good sign that Apple still cares (a bit) about music production. The new GUI is not my taste but i can live with that.
Garage Band on iOS is sadly still far away from the macOS version but it's also evolving slowly.
In general i'm quite happy with the updates...i mean they are free so nothing to complain anyway.

  • OK, I just made a groovy little thing in no time inside GB. That drummer stuff is great. And playing a mono bass synth line on the "Smart bass" fretboard is incredibly inspiring for me as a guitar player.

  • FM Essential is still a static noise-fest for me in GB. Those two do not like each other :|

Seems like the AU hiccups happen in grid view mostly, in track view it works nicely so far, hopefully its a bug and not a cpu limitation and they'll sort it out swiftly.

  • Now that the initial thrill has worn off, I'm starting to realize that my devices are the minimum required. They don't FEEL old to me...

  • so theres some decently good news for folks like me who are into alternate tunings such as 432hz and 444hz... you can create your iOS GB project, do all the work you want on the ipad, then just transfer it over to LPX via Itunes file sharing (crappy but oh well), and from there you can go ahead and alter your projects tuning. I am still holding out for Apple to give me global tuning in iOS GB, but now I can actually work with iOS GB however clunkily. Stoked.

  • That was a quick honey moon for me. Back to Auria.

  • Has anyone found a way to add or transfer alchemy presets to GarageBand ios ?

I don't have a Jailbroken iOS10.2 device to try on but the patch/folder-strcture insde the IPA file is next to identical to the LogicPro X install so it should theoretically be possible to dump in the patches and samples and then modify the patch-list...

And has anyone found a way to dig around into the Garageband package file to find any likely AIFF parts that are either Apple Loop files or midi inside .aif or .caf core audio files?
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Interchange_File_Format#AIFF_Apple_Loops
    Then take the midi out?
All while you're on an ipad, and without a hex editor?

They were *.caf when I checked.
Since *.caf is a 'container format' i guess the midi file is embedded...

  • Rated 2 stars. No midi implementation, no audio out routing. It's 2017....
Maybe low rating would help developing ,lol

  • It may be that Apple is adding certain GarageBand functionality mainly to propel Logic Pro sales.

  • New GB update still working very well for me. Alchemy obviated the need for other synths that I was waiting on to go AUv3. AU effects on vocals making a big difference too. All made possible by Ruismaker though...without that I wouldn't bother with GB

Importing a .band folder into Audioshare from iCloud reveals some things, but not had a proper rummage.

Also the latest update to file browser app lists ability to pass .band files as a new feature.
But I can't make it work.

Maybe Apple should start to sell GB for €30 too to stop people complaining about free software :p
We already live in times where work (even for free) doesn't get appreciated.
    Welcome to 2017! ;)
At least i didn't saw any real good GUI for multi-touch in other iOS DAW's compared to GB.

  • Garageband for iOS is just fine as long as no deeper editing or advanced automation is needed.
The included sounds are to my ears at the same level as the instruments included in LogicPro X. And it doesn't surprise me since the same engines are used in both apps, just a bit (ok a lot) more restrictions regarding instrument editing.

Yes. Also (even if you don't need or use them) the quality and amount of Apple Loops is great too.
Also you can get a lot free ones from third party too.
The smart instruments are great for touch-screens and there is a lot other good stuff.....free!
Sure it lacks the deep editing of some other DAW but they lack in other areas.
