Along with those two, and FLSM, this really is the best straight-up DAW on the android platform...
(There are a few other items on Android, not strictly DAWs, that I can recommend)
Please do. Let me know your recommended Android apps.
Audio Evolution Mobile is on Android, I think. I don't know how well it works on Android, but I'd take it any day over FLSM if it works OK.
Lack of time signature/BPM changes is a bit of a flaw. I looked at an early version of this but hated the interface. Might try again though.
LOL. Caustic obviously.
+1 Caustic. I rarely use it on iOS because of the wealth of newer apps, but if I was on Android, that is what I’d use.
Wait ... Zenbeats is on Android too, and has a free version to try out. That could be very promising. I really like Zenbeats on iOS.
AEM is definitely on Android. We’ll have to agree to disagree about FLSM (on both Android and iOS). FLSM for Android stands above AEM in a few areas, certainly for those that want deep onboard synthesis. AEM ships with sF2 only, and there is no plugin support on the Android platform. FLSM offers other things that AEM lacks, and vice versa but that’s another story for a different thread
@Samflash3
Recommendations for Android: yes Caustic (obviously lol) and the rest of the cross platform options - (a few off the top of my head SunVox, Pixitracker, Fractal Bits, Deflemask, Kaossilator, RD4, Music Studio, and Nanoloop - which is in public beta on Android, a very different version not available on iOS)
The Android soft that attracted me to the platform are 3 that have features and workflow unavailable on iOS: G-Stomper Producer, Bandpass (which is in public beta), and DrumPad Beats, which is built on the Caustic sound engine. Another cool one unlike any iOS app is Synthesizer by Yossi Barel, which contra the name is a very deep sample based groove box.
Good point about plugin support and onboard synths. 👍
I didn’t think about that.
Yep we’re well spoiled on iOS
@dwrae hi I been using AEM since its beginnings on iOS . Any plans on a user interface overhaul or an option added to change colour theme from brown&yellow?
According to the developer, the Android version of AEM is due to move to V5 update soon - IOS version will get the same features (hopefully including tonebooster effects v4) bit by bit some point in the future.
@Hypervox ok cool hopefully the graphics&colour theme gets an overhaul. Its a great DAW sound wise but the interface to me looks bit dated now Brown/Yellow etc.
The developer has added Cntrl S to Save projects. How do I get the ipad keyboard to show so I can type. Thanks in advance
Sorry to disappoint, but the yellow gets even more prominent in v5, especially on Android.
Example:
I didn’t know about this one. @Littlewoodg I think you’ve mentioned another daw at some point but I believe it was more expensive?
What was it? And how do they compare?
I need the audio part too but honestly I’m afraid of new daw purchases, not so much for the money as for the potential disappointment...
How does AEM cope with time signatures, tempo changes, midi editing...? I won’t even ask about MPE
@dwrae ok cool
It’s what we used to call a sleeper...it has a very nice entry price, (without any add ons you can do a lot with the onboard instruments and limited tracks...). Once you start getting into the in app purchases - as I always do (I’ve bought all the sf2, and most of the fx) you’ll get closer to the price of all the other daws whose iap I’ve also bought...
I’ve had it on the device and used it, as with most DAWs I’m fickle, and delete and redownload apps including this
I had to check on the AppStore description for tempo and time sig support and I didn’t see it. That’s not a definitive answer.
It’s a cool app and very capable, and the dev is constantly tweaking, and adding features. When I was beta testing the iPhone version, and even as a user in this forum, people would make a suggestion and dude would make the change in under 24 hrs. So there’s that (I got kicked off the beta but that’s a story for another time)
The workflow is very smart. It’s feature rich, and has great support.
The other DAW I was talking about was MultitrackStudio. Another sleeper and one I’ve never deleted.
It also ships with the full set of GM soundfonts like AEM
It does support time sig and tempo changes. It has a feature set that’s almost ridiculously broad...it does many many things that the “first tier” DAWs don’t do...
It’s a nearly exact port of a desktop DAW (this and N-Track are the only ones on iOS) and has back and forth integration between iOS/PC/Mac builds.
In some ways the iOS version is slicker and more intuitive that the desktop version. The desktop app has been developed since 2009, and was touch enabled for Windows machines way back in the day. All of that makes for a very deep stable build on iOS.
It’s an incredible iOS DAW imho,,,I think people are put off by its GUI (gray, plain, some would say ugly. No processing wasted on pretty colors). It also has an idiosyncratic workflow, there’s a learning curve like any DAW and it’s not steep really, just odd for some people
All in, with all in app purchases MTS is about $60, much like Cubasis (Cubasis is more than that if you buy all the IAPs) Auria is way more if you buy everything, I think AEM ends up around $60 with everything...
Having said all that I’ll probably re-install AEM because it’s been awhile, just to see how I get on with it...I do have a crazy # of Soundfonts I can put in there.
The AEM feature set is very impressive, again out doing many first tier DAWs
Each DAW is a special creature...and each dev’s ingenuity amazes me. AEM and it’s dev is no different. Comes down to how you feel working in there. AEM is awesome in that regard because it’s free to try, you can get a feel for the workflow painlessly.
Man, I can blab.
Yes, Multitrack Studio, thanks @Littlewoodg
What I fear is investing time in learning to later find out it lacks this or that. I really like NanoStudio but nobody knows when audio is coming.
AEM looks nice. I hope somebody can tell me more about time signatures and tempo changes.
Let me know about your impressions after reinstalling 😊
It’s @dwrae the dev?
I really like the design for what I can see.
Yep that’s the guy. I’ll keep you posted: I’m downloading it now...and I’ll probably buy more of the IAPs once I do. There’s something wrong with me, I think. Though I really want to support the dev
Wrong? Buy? You’re not alone 🙄
Reinstalled, (and bought the rest of the IAP sf2, and a bunch of IAP loops, yikes!)
Good sounds all around
The instruments and loops cover enough ground that one could complete projects without straying outside the app.
This makes sense in that (I believe) AEM is a port from Android (where as we know there's no IAA and AUv3.)
No onboard synth, but on iOS that's not an issue...
Wasn't long before I was making stuff in it, I had some muscle memory from the last time it was installed: it has its learning curve like the rest of the DAWs, but it's not terribly steep. I just needed to remember how to get to which menu when. There's links in the app to tutorial stuff on YouTube, these from Tim Webb that originally were in the "Let's Play With..." series on his Discchord site...worth a look if youre thinking about buying. Videos, and free-to-try is a pretty cool way to get wet
Well, you have my attention. I went to their website, tried to find something about time signatures in their support but no luck. Did you try that too?
No But I’m poking around in the app and app descriptions, on AppStore and Google Play- no love so far
@despego im on it now, and looks like you can adjust time sig is in the tempo section.
Looks nice, @shinyisshiny It seems it gives you option to any type of time signature?
This and MPE support as described in the app description makes it very attractive.
I'm going to think about it anyway, I don't feel like a rush anymore - I used to jump into any app whenever there was MPE written on it and that doesn't always mean something.
Thanks for the heads up to you all.
Just a short note to confirm that AEM Studio records MIDI MPE (although no editing) and can cope with (almost) any time signature. No tempo changes though.
I see new updates are coming.
We just announced tempo and time signature change for AEMv5 for Android. This will come to the iOS version in the next months as well:
