When/If GarageBand gets controller automation and editing for AUv3's and internally recorded instruments it will be pretty darn powerful. I mean you can 'record' pitch-bend and mod-wheel but there is no way to edit the recorded data. All AUv3 parameters are visible but once again, no way to record or automate them.

There is one Youtuber out there whom I see as the uncrowned king of Garageband.

I learned a lot about GarageBand by watching many of his videos :)

    This guy is the king.

  • Sometimes you have to sit down and LEARN how to use an app first. I think some people use the word "intuitive" when they really mean "effortless ". Two completely different things. Somebody brand new to iOS music making should expect to put some effort into educating themselves as to how things work. This is true whether an app is intuitive or it isn't. A DAW of any kind would not be something a raw beginner could just sit down and use without some investment in learning it.

Wise words and i'm certainly one of the people who used intuitive when i should have used effortless :)

  • @Samu, I never knew there was a way to import an AIFF into GB without using iTunes. Very helpful info a few posts above; thanks for that! Here's an odd one: I opened a 115 bpm Apple Loop from Audioshare using your method described above. When it plays in a 115 bpm track, it sounds like it's playing through a "pitch warbler" effect. Kind of flange-y and phase-y and warbley. (Best way I can describe it). It even happens when I preview the loop from the Loops menu. When I kick the tempo up to over 120, suddenly the effect goes away. The same loop is un-effected when I use it in Auria Pro, timestretched or at the original 115 bpm. And there's no other effect being applied to the track in GB. This phenomenon does not occur on any of the Apple Loops that came with GB. I need to try importing some more loops into GB and see what happens, but I thought it was a little quirky.

While I agree there is a certain amount of startup effort you need to invest in apps, I also believe that apps can vary as to how easy or difficult they are to learn. This can be due to the scope of the app (how much does it try to do), the quality of the GUI design, and how similar it is to what we're already familiar with. The amount of documentation, the form of documentation, the need for documentation, and our own individual learning styles will effect how much effort is needed to learn an app. For some people an app's GUI design can be so off putting for them that they have no motivation to learn an app as it runs counter to their values of what a music creation environment should be like.

  • Hi, first time I use this board :)

using GB on iOS for years now on my iPad 4 (can't profit from Alchemy) to quickly save new ideas.
And it's a marvellous tool while on the road.
But there is one issue which drives me nuts. I already contacted the Apple support without solution, 'cause this feature is simply missing. Maybe someone knows a way around...

In the song overview screen you can filter by name or date, BUT the date is always the date you opened a song the last time and not the date it was generated. Parallel to normal desktop use that means "last modified" even if you only open it without any change.
I started to name my songs like "2017-08-23_nameofsong" to at least been able to know the date AND now I can sort it by name.
    Is there any other way?

I don't think there is another way. Only tip I have: name the song as 170823_nameofsong. It is shorter. I do this for years now without problems. You will get used to the code.

  • I started making music in general in GarageBand. I try not to use it but it's so easy and slick it's hard for me to really focus on learning much else... I wish it had automation, they could go more crazy with the sampler. A lot of little things could be upgraded. Better holding AU support. I have a the smaller original pro and AU kinda freaks out after a couple, or sounds won't load.

Lack of midi and stem export make GB annoying for me.
I love the smart instruments and the ease at getting ideas down, but I want to then edit and mix them with Studio One on my PC. At the moment, if you start something in GB, you are stuck in GB unless you have a Mac and Logic.

True, you can export the whole project and open it on a Mac with GB or Logic. Then you'll have everything, MIDI, too.
So for those, who are completely dwelling in the Apple realm, it's not too bad :-)

Can other DAWs output at better quality for more mastering headroom? I think I read this was a Garageband limitation (limited to 16bit?).

Yes 16bit output is one of the limiting factors for me, but I still use GB because I find it a very creative environment in which to work. And yes, Cubasis can do up to 24bit, Auria as well and maybe higher? (I can't recall and I don't have it installed in my current iPad).

Well, you can export the whole project and open it on a Mac with GB or Logic. Then you'll have every option to export how you like.
So for those, who are completely dwelling in the Apple realm, it's quite cool.:-)

Garageband on ios needs way more sounds for alchemy and a real sampler ...they also need to fix the latency that occurs with the apogee MIC that isnt present in any other app I own..over 50 ms of latency is terrible

oh and to upgrade the poopy effects to au or basically anything else...say even the au's that are built into ios?

AT LEAST LET US IMPORT OUR LPX ALCHEMY PATCHES INTO GARAGEBAND MOBILE!

  • I am missing the pitch bend option by sliding left and right on the virtual keyboard for AU synths. Would be cool to have this.

Yes, the wheel is there. Sliding right and left an the virtual keyboard, is what I am longing for. This is possible with the GB built in synths like Alchemy. It is so precise for sliding up 7 semitones and after that sliding down 2.

Well, Noise supports this feature. Looks like the AU instrument must support MPE, then GB enables this feature on the virtual keyboard.

  • Here are a few issues in GB:

    1. Every time we open a project and close it without making any changes, it re-saves the project and moving it to the top. This is ridiculous. They should know there were no changes and hence no need to re-save it or update its timestamp.
    2. Track selection is cumbersome - we need to go into the Sequencer screen to select a different track for the keyboard. Instead, they could display all of it on a single screen like they do in iPad Pro or how Cubasis does using panels or they could offer a Track dropdown on the Keyboard/synth screen (similar to NanoStudio) where we can tap on a track to change to the new instrument for the Keyboard.
    3. From Google Drive, the Open In option does not list GB. I need to save to Files first.
    4. Recently, they introduced a bug where the Glissando/Scroll/Pitch button is GONE! It is missing. Hopefully, they will notice it and bring it back.

  • To me what lacks in GB is stable AU. We had got no sound bug AU during months, and now I have issues with song export and AU like Audio Damage. Sometimes export is done with AU crashes messages, or there are strange pitch variations with Replicant. Last thing is that AU are much more cpu hungry in GB than AUM and no freezing options. So it’s not really usable for me as I really need AU. And it’s too bad as live loops mode is so closed to Ableton Live session view, with even audio and midi loops. It’s a so nice workflow. But waiting for months or years for proper bugless app is too much for me I fear.

    • to me, the interface is not intuitive at all, I keep struggling to get the simplest things done and get constantly lost. "Intuitive" is in the eye of the beholder, I guess ;)
    • very slow workflow. Everything is riddled with slow, exaggerated animations.
    • no automation editing. Complete showstopper, 100%. End of story.
    • very limited editing in general. No linked (cloned) parts. No MIDI editing to speak of apart from moving notes. No arrangement tools.
    • no scales support in the pianoroll IIRC. Makes editing on small screens very cumbersome, or if you have no musical talent ;)
    • no sound design capabilities. Yes, there's a ton of sounds and they're of high quality, however, I want THIS sound and then with THAT filter type and modulate it between 100 Hz and 10 kHz PRECISELY because THAT'S the musical idea I have in my mind right now. Not possible.
    • very limited and static aux effects. Only 2 aux sends. Not useful for professional production.

I could list lots more but that's off the top of my head. Not trying to offend anyone. GarageBand is probably a huge lot of fun to lots of people for an indeed very decent price. So, I'm not complaining. Just answering the question :)

  • I see myself heading the way I did with Logic. Minimum 3rd party plugins. I just stuck only with Spectrasonics. As GarageBand iOS builds out over the years I’ll probably just stick with Moog. Hopefully Animoog AU is forthcoming.

  • I think it’s missing a global fx and eq

Also, to be able to draw fx modulations would be cool too

I’ve had zero issues with AUV3, I’ve had five or six synths or instances thereof with fx and everything has been fine.

Audio damage fx apps are cpu hungry within AUM for me so I won’t use them in GB, apesoft and kymatica fx have been stable in GB

You can get a global EQ if you create a brief remix FX track then delete the clip. the FX track will remain as a master bus with an embedded visual EQ B)

Share your gb Files to AudioShare and take advantage of the directory structuring the app offers.

  • Two annoying things about Garageband are:
    1) The count in is fixed at 1 bar. I usually prefer a 2 bar count in. Especially for faster tempo songs where you have to switch to another app.

    2) You can only loop an entire section or the entire song. You can't loop multiple sections (eg. Just section B and C) and you can't just loop 2 or 4 bars within a section.
I often want to loop just 2 or 4 bars when writing, recording and editing.
Also, it is often good to loop a section, but start 1 or 2 bars before the start of the section if you have a lead in at the end of the bar before, or even if the first note you are recording is on beat 1, but it's something with a slow attack like strings that you need to start playing before the actual beat.

  • Many good points in this thread.
I'd to to see more and better fx to shape the sound of my vocals.
    Plus Flex Pitch
I would like to have the global fx/remix effects for a single channel of my choice, too.
