Song of the Month Club - June 2017

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

  • Hi everyone,

This song sat in that pile of unfinished ideas that we all have for sooo long. I'm so happy to have finally finished the bugger! :D I used sessionband acoustic to arrange the guitar and thumbjams Cello, mixed in Auria and "mastered" (he says loosely! :p ) in audio mastering. It's a bare bones affair, I'd like to know if it needs anything else? Or if it stands tall enough as it is? Any other thoughts are also welcome.

It really does feel great FINISHING ideas. Thanks for listening guys.

@LostBoy85 out of the traps fast and first Mister Leo. Very evocative, great employment of your principal asset via the admirable use of harmony. I also love the simple/classic acoustic/cello combo. What else could be needed for a piece loaded with wistfulness (always my favorite flavor)?

The vocal is good/clear enough that no lyric cheat sheet is required, being a word hound I might grumble a little about the 'bike' bits but I imagine I fall into the one in a hundred who might trip over/criticize that so I would do little more than take it under advisement etc.

Well done and now you've got the rest of the month or so to kick back and relax :)

Actually I listened to this before you posted here. Very smooth. I'm normally a Deep House/Disco/Dub Club Headed Monster. :D ....... But I managed to get a listen to this(in between the mad silly Pool cleaning season here in Sunny Cyprus)....... I found it very relaxing. Loved the Vocals. Nice one mate. ;)

  • @JohnnyGoodyear thank you sir! :) I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@studs1966 thanks buddy! I appreciate the feedback :)

  • @LostBoy85 what exactly do you do with the session band sound in Auria? What effects do you add?
Do you record your voice directly into Auria? What mic do you have?
BTW it's a great song. And I like the softness in your voice.

  • @marcuspresident Hi mate, Firstly I wrote the song on my Ukelele, my skill on that is limited so I took acoustic sessionband app, chose the style I wanted and then programmed my chord sequence into that. I then simply recorded that via iaa into Auria, added some convolution reverb and that was it.

The singing is done directly into Auria through my presonus audio interface. I have a Shure PGA58 mic. I then edit the hell out of it and add deesser,EQ and compression (klevgrands korvpressor as it's super easy to use.)

Hope that helps. I'm glad you like the song.
    Cheers.

  • @LostBoy85 You have a fantastic tone to your voice and your harmonies are great - they work really well together. It is a lovely song, but I'm not sure the guitar and vocal are sitting right together in the mix - on my headphones at least. It almost feels like the guitar and the vocal are in different rooms?
I don't know why technically, but I would say that it's because of the reverb on the guitar?
    Even so, great song.

  • Hey guys like i said parallel eq and parallel compresion is a good thing i suggest you try. It made a world of diference.

  • @trackedout Good raw grungy guitar sound and some very eclectic stuff going on here.
Have you purposely buried the vocals? Is it a melody line to be worked on? Reminded me of Mudhoney. Anyway, liked the raw lo fi feel to this, has a good edge to it.

  • @studs1966 The intro reminded me of Transport Tycoon on the PC of the 90's. then it kicks in to a very slick sounding club track. I hope you're not offended if I say that it put me in mind of Jamiroqui jamming with Michael Jackson?
I'd prefer the bass sound to be a bit sharper, but that might take something away from the rest of the sound. Great vocals again and nice breakdown towards the end.

Hey dude, congrats on learning this new technique, it's always cool to learn new tricks! I wish I could get my head around parallel compression. I'm sure it's probably easier than I think it is.

This is another good track. Lots going on, I love the high end stuff, the texture of the acoustic and your signature lo fi vibe. Vocals sound better than last track for sure, but could still come up a bit imho. I felt some of the timing was off with the acoustic? Not sure if that's just my ears?

All in all...thought it was cool man! Congrats!

Very nice mate! So have you taken an accapella of an existing song? ( I have a producer bud who does this.) or is this something you've written and got someone to sing? Is the music heavily sample based or have you written the piano and brass? I'm just curious of your process mate. Whatever the process is, you have ended up with a very polished sounding track. Congrats mate. :)

Ok, I'm sorry but i couldn't listen to all of this as 15mins is way beyond my attention span for ANY kind of music at the moment. I did jump in and out and listened to maybe 6 mins all in all & it sounded very nice! Exactly as it says on the tin...an ambient soundscape! Congrats!

Thanks @LostBoy85.. All the acapella she I use are paid from sites, like Loopmasters/FutureLoops, etc, or from free sites (Looperman for example). I do have a acapellas from record labels(Defected, or Traxsource.com for example) but I don't use them as much, just in case of a copyright infringement. The tracks I do in my trackare some samples, but also, I add to it with my own playing with the keyboard, or iPad...... whatever is needed at the time inside my head........ (As I think samples can sound too cliche).... But whatever Samples I decide to use, are always Copyright free.

What i meant that too many samples in a track can sound too cliche....... It depends how you use, & what way you use them.. You can also use a Wav sample & convert this to Midi, then add your instrument to the Midi loop, for example.

  • @studs1966 Aha!! I see, thanks for sharing your process mate! Haha! Don't worry I'm not copyright police! :D I'm just curious is all.

  • [A wistful love song to due process]

    In the sad madness
    Of this one night
    All but the truth
    Will soon come to light

    As the constitution
    Of our sweet selves
Is placed up above on high
    On the lonely shelves

    A plum inside
    A poisoned peach
    Beyond us now
    Forever out of reach

  • @LostBoy85 hey thank you for listening. Yeah there was a timing issue but I am by far a perfectionist . instead of fixing something I move on and try to make the next one better.. About parallel compression its so simple, basically in auria on a vocal or any tracks output you assign it to buss 12&3 then make 3 stereo tracks and make the input buss 1 2 3.. So the first one leave dry. The second compress the third eq effects or any combination then mix the 3. Makes drums sound amazing. Well hope I made it easy enough for you to try

  • This is my original song "Kabbalah". It has an eastern/central european feel, and I used improvised percussion instruments once again, this time trying something new: two glasses, half-full with water and of different sizes, playing them with a flat spoon, resulting in a sound similar to a cowbell (but better, let me say that!). The main theme is played with a classical guitar, using quite forceful rest strokes to create a kind of urgence in the sound, and also electric bass and keyboard for the synth sounds. You'll notice the rhythm is unusual: that is because the time signature of the song is 7/4, that is, counting to seven, which is not very common. I recorded my performance using two iPad's cameras (one focusing the right hand, the other, the left hand) and a Galaxy On7's, and edited and mastered the audio on the iPad, using Auria Pro, and edited the video also on the iPad, using LumaFusion.

  • Lots of songs to review: this is a great month in the SOTMC!

  • @JohnnyGoodyear, what a beautiful song! The doubled voices one octave apart were a great touch, and you're singing better than ever. Are you using LumaFusion? Great edition!

  • @studs1966, great track! The vocal, is it sampled, or did you have a singer working with you? It's ready for commercial release, your track: I cannot find a single flaw, to my taste. Congrats, and keep it up!
