Think Figure with an additional track, midi stuff, chord, and CUSTOMIZABLE PATTERNS. Bravo @BeatonalDev! Very clever design here.

    And synth programming!

How does this app compare to Pulse?

I didn't like Pulse so this is much better for me. it's more comparable to figure. One thing, I think the internal synth sounds are way better than the crappy samples in Pulse, but this doesn't look to have sample import

Honestly, apps like this are what make iOS so much fun for me. The distance between something like this and, say, Beatmaker 3 is considerable. But, there's a place for both in terms of music-making--and in fact, perhaps even a place where both work together... Cool find.

What about IAA and audiobus compatibility?

Haven't gotten around to it yet, but will definitely add it in some next release.

Any possibility in the future for different time signatures other than 4/4?

It used to have it but i took it out since it didn't mix well with all the pattern stuff. I have added quantization options for 1/64th and 1/12th notes, so you still have some freedom if you don't mind arranging the notes yourself.

It's definitely faster. Figure/iKaossilator-style finger sequencing. About 30 seconds and you've got a nice little groove going.

Giving it a go for $3. Impressions are pretty positive so far. Synth engine is relatively tame, but I've gotten some dirt using the FX and EQ. Would like to see a scene mode, or at least iKassolator style pattern selection so that I can build on these little loops without exporting... but for $3 there's a lot under the hood. Feel like a more feature-rich Figure, although the presets aren't quite as punchy and modern-sounding. Compressor/Limiter on the master bus would be nice too!

UI is easy to navigate. Not a huge fan of the colors or fonts.

  • Hey @BeatonalDev: really fun little app. Two things from my first go at it:

--it's fairly simple to go into the edit mode to fix something, but a simple Undo at the top level would be even better. :-)

--this is the perfect app for the iPhone--I'm most apt to use something like this when I'm on the go and want to knock out something quick. Any chance you could optimize the UI for phone a bit?

  • One thing I've noticed is you can't slide your finger around from pad to pad ala Figure as it won't pick up the touch unless you lift your finger off first and then touch again. You have to touch each pad separately.

This is the biggest thing I notice right away. Any way this can be addressed?

I really like this one. @AndyPlankton is right, it's a good writer. Very quick and easy. Clever design. Can export MIDI (with the 2,79 Pro purchase etc). Easy open straight into (for example) Cubasis. Can also export a wave, but not sure why you would. Reminds me of Figure. The UI is nothing like as pretty, looks basic, but it's incredibly easy to use. AND you can edit patterns in a way I wish Figure could....a nice quick cheap addition.

Hmmm if you can 'Open in' the MIDI then it will not be as easy to ignore. Cheers for the info JG :)

Another quick question.....are the drum notes mappable/transposable ?

Currently not, but i'll add it to my to-do list.

:) thanks that would be great....what notes are they currently mapped to...I would be wanting to send them out realtime to Novation circuit which has 4 drum tracks, C3, D3, E3, and F3 (thats the octave I send from Luis Martinez apps, not sure of the actual MIDI note numbers) ....

I took the plunge, have had a quick fiddle, and think I will get a lot of use from this as a starter for projects...
Me also thinks @jakoB_haQ will really like this....he has wanted MIDI Out from Figure for a while now ;)

    Good job @BeatonalDev :)

    Good spot @flo26

I think they're two different animals (both of which I really like, so take that into consideration).

Pulse is all sample based, (and unlike some I don't think the samples are weak or crappy at all, and of course Pulse also includes a very easy import protocol so you aren't limited to the factory library), where Beatonal has onboard synthesis (and its own sample hits, but no import protocol as of yet).

For my purposes, Beatonal (presently) fits what @JohnnyGoodyear talks about: a place to sketch and export midi, where Pulse has song mode, and has the potential (a very long list of deep features, worth looking at the AppStore write up) of a mini studio to export finished loop or song .wav

The above lines are blurred for me a bit because Beatonal has a pretty tasty synth engine (which I wish Pulse had) which means I may what to export more than just the midi from Beatonal.

I just checked and I slide my finger around with free play (no pattern) and a pattern, and it picked up everything. Maybe your pattern was too sparse to notice?

Not on the drum page here which is what I checked before. It does appear the bass, chord and leads will change when sliding around but not on the drum page.

  • @yowza yeah not on drums, but you can't slide across lanes in Figures drums either

  • You're right!. I hadn't used Figure in so long I forgot. Duh!

  • I'd like an undo button as well please.

Very much thanks for comparison of both both apps will check out the deep features of Pulse.

    Edit: grumpy post removed

  • @BeatonalDev congrats on being the dev who finally improved on the Figure paradigm. Really appreciate the Midi out, keep up the great work!

Lol it's not 100% the same, but way better than the sloppy way Figure does it still. Very close

It's the same IAP, when you say yes to buying it, it'll say you bought it already and you can download it for free.

Now, Anyone having Sync issues with it's Ableton Link?
Seems the Sync is working at half speed with Maschine....

  • I'm loving this app. The midi out makes it a true beast. Run this into Gadget with each track to a different gadget on a different channel. Dope AF. Simple app with complex results. The IAP is worth it. Support the developer.

  • @BeatonalDev great job on this so far..hope you add more scales in the future.
