@midiSequencer hi, just picked this up last night. I’ve only had a short play so far, and like it... But I have a few questions.

    1. You did some demos with hyper fast tempo for interesting effects. quantum only goes to 240. So, it can’t perform those amazing high tempo effects? Or, am I missing a setting somewhere?

as mentioned by @Trueyorky the song tempo is slower to all tempo divisions (think of this as ratios).
So song tempo = 1..240 bpm
A sequence is 4/1d (=x6) to 1/64T times the song,
but you can also tempo divide steps 4/1d to 1/64T....

So I usually pick a slow song BPM (e.g.30) and speed up the sequences.
Here is an example of a 30bpm song I did 7 months ago on Quantum,

Nice. (Just unsure why it needs so much space on the device. Could that be optimized?)

Its retina graphics for those of us that have iPad pro's (bought mine a couple of weeks ago). I could optimise it but really is that such an issue? I'll keep it in mind though for when I do the modern skin.

(bought mine a couple of weeks ago too)
Always good to optimize, I did that with my graphic-heavy apps and it made a huge difference.
Space is so limited on iPad, many thanks in advance!
    Anyways, really fun app.

    2. Seems someone here who is a professional graphic designer, was on board to help you rework the GUI of this one. Did nothing ever come of that? This looks nearly identical to the GUI of midisequencer... A GUI that frankly, prevented me from purchasing it. Just being honest here.

I'm a on-man producer - so do all the coding & gfx etc - just had help with new features and debugging. Its therefore easier for me to reuse than start from scratch.

However, this retro style isn't everyones cup of tea - so a new skin will appear making this much more modern (and easier on the eyes) - but for me the important aspect, and the fun thing to produce is functionality.

don’t know if it is possible. but can you record notes in like this (starting 1:53). ? if so, how?

    Seems like it does...

awww it totally does. and does it really well! the deeper i dig the better this app gets..... so cool!

    3. I only originally played with the lite version of midisequencer before I decided it might not be for me, due mostly to the interface. What are the main points that make Quantum different from midisequencer? Some here say it’s “more powerful”. How so? Just more sequences possible? Granted, I haven’t yet spent enough time with quantum yet to join the chorus of glowing opinions others have of this, but so far it seems very much similar to midisequencer.

Its more like midiSequencer two - but contains a years worth of extra development and the contents of another app I was producing (clip sequencer). I also completely rewrote the clock to work on ppqn, added many sync options and updated to allow sharing & ableton link.

midiSequencer did loads, but it wasn't really polyphonic sequencing - so lacks the polytonal, polyrhythmic characteristics you get when playing melodies together (harmonic or otherwise).

by all means listen to the demos & look at the videos - this style of composing might not suit you - but to me it's serendipity & creation by discovery - swipe your finger over the 16 notes, copy/paste & you get hypnotic patterns emerge.. therefore its contrapuntal & fugue like.

@midiSequencer - Just had a really long play and am struck with how finished this app feels and I’ve only scratched the surface. It’s so well thought out, so much fun. I know you’re going to add more stuff and people can’t help but ask for more, but this feels very complete as is.

Thx - when you can think of something that would be nice to add please do! I actually use this app to create my music now - dark ambient & contrapuntal sequencing.....

    Thank you!
Deep into a groove on the the first play.

cool - hope it creates happy moments in your music making.

planned (at some point) is midi file import/export/play too.

Oh, I’m on board I think. Was just trying to decide if midisequencer might’ve better suited me. I’m not wild about the GUI as stated, but the functional prospects look very interesting.

I have paid attention to the demos. One of the reasons I never went for midisequencer is that I figured I’d hold off and get the freshest baby instead.

The model 15 demo is the one I was thinking of, but wasn’t there another one where you achieved some tangerine dream effect using hyper fast tempo? Like around 1200bpm?

Just started the intro to quantum video, which is going to be very helpful. As someone new to audio work, some of the musical terms aren’t entirely familiar to me. Seeing them demo’d and explained as you’re doing in the intro video is perfect for users like me. I’m hoping you do another one just like it, but takes it beyond “intro” and more into the advanced functions.

  • If I've understood this correctly Quantum can 'replace' midiSequencer with all it's IAPs and adds a ton of new cool stuff? :)

no hassle - I just forgot to switch it back!

Ah, that may explain why it seems to work perfectly under LowerInstall! (As do Xequence and Kaspar, I've been delighted to find.) But big thanks for remembering those of us who quite like it back here in early 2016, though I'm a bit envious of all you future-dwellers under President Hillary being able to listen to Jóhann Jóhannsson's Blade Runner score.

plenty more videos planned - not just IOS either. The video I did only covered one sequence, no parts, no actions or much of the extras quantum gives you.

This was the TD one yes? That was done on midiSequencer, so I must do one with multi-sequences :)

You can always get fast notes by adding echoFx - its all about tempo dividing step intervals.

But what you probably looking for is TD's Rubycon opening section - Chris Franke did this using fast sequences to create an ethereal effect.

this one (using quantum) is quite fast

Loving this hooked up to my modular! Really great tool! One question, because I’m obviously too stupid, how do I change MIDI channel per part? The help says I set it on page 2, but I have no idea what that means :s

Skip, you're going to love this. Watch the dev's 23-minute tutorial and you will be awed. It's like a generative app but you control every parameter.

Look for the little asterisk at the right of the sequence line. That gets you to the rest of the settings.

    thx
midi channel can be assigned at three levels:

    1) Sequencer (page 2 - so use * button on bottom RHS of screen) - you will see a Ch label - 0 means use step midi channel, so enter something in here to quickly set.

    2) Per Step - there is a parameter lane ( a fader display) just for midi channel. You can draw it there - per step. The fact that parts use steps means, for example, if you set part A = steps 1..8 & part B = steps 9..16, just change steps 1..8 to use ch 1 & steps 9..16 to use ch 2 say.

    3) You can modify midi channel using midi fx too.

So, when we humanise.. it’s like REALLY like having a human playing these sequences, only better... The Humanise feature is revolutionary...

    Rather, Quantum is a REVOLUTION.
    Much Respect to the developer..

    Crazy..

Easy there Zaphod. We’re still learning how to work the tea dispenser. We’re not quite ready to engage the Probability Drive just yet.

One small bug report and a feature request:

    • Dashes “-“ in file names are translated into question marks when saving.
    • Please consider optional “vertical motion” for knobs. Rotary knobs drive me nuts.

    Congrats on this amazing accomplishment!

  • Got the vids - such an well thought out amazing app !!!

terrible dialog level on the video though ;)

  • Hehe, good video indeed, however I had settle for "knowing" some things are in there and that I'll probably now will find them as I know I should be looking for them, but in the video I missed the initial click for quite a few things and all of a sudden there was a new pop-up with lots of great options. Even though it was repeated a couple of times in the video I have no idea where it came from. I'll probably find it when I get my iPad though. :)

Also a video with several racks, and how to set them up, would be great to see.

  • I agree on the rotary knobs, they are a struggle ...

How to make one sequence transpose another? I was trying to set up a slow-going S2 and select this S2 in the "transpose input" of S1, but couldn´t hear any difference no matter what.
