Tabletop Updated: Inter-app Audio Devices & AudioCopy 2
Retronyms has updated Tabletop to version 2.2:
Tabletop 2.2 adds two new devices with support for inter-app audio. One is a free controller for midi-controllable apps, and the other is an inter-app audio recorder that can capture the audio produced by other apps. This update also adds support for AudioCopy 2.0. Finally, it adds several bugfixes and iOS 7 enhancements.
The IAA MIDI keyboard is called Mastermind and is free. The IAA recorder device is called Zignal and is a $4.99 IAP.
Despite Tabletop being a relatively "closed" environment due to the lack of Audiobus, these new IAA devices open up some great new possibilities. I usually use BM2 for my productions but I've been having a great time experimenting with Tabletop recently. Hopefully this update with IAA support convinces more people to give Tabletop a try.
Comments
Def makes it more usable and the free midi IAA keyboard has a sequencer so you can sequence any synths and etc with it as well as CC knobs
it crashes for me quite often - but i haven't updated to ios7 yet. maybe that will help.
Guys don't take Table Top for granted, they have a large user base
For anyone curious, here's the guide for Mastermind:
Mastermind is an inter-app audio controller allowing you to control up to 128 parameters on the target app with four banks of 32 knobs.
Audio Input Source
Tap this icon to reveal the menu of installed compatible apps, and a selection of Retronyms’ recommended apps will be displayed as well. Tap select to connect to the compatible app. Once the app is connected, its icon will replace the blank Audio Input Source button. Tap this icon to open the target app.
Banks and Knobs
Each knob sends and receives MIDI for the indicated control number. Test a knob to see which parameter is mapped to it or use the MIDI mapping interface in the target app to associate the knobs with controls in the target. Tap each bank of knobs to access additional parameters; the currently selected bank is highlighted bright blue.
Sequence and Timeline Editor Buttons
Opens the Sequence menu and Timeline Editor found elsewhere in Tabletop.
Octave Control
Tap the +|- buttons to move the octave up and down, respectively.
Scroll
Tap the Scroll button to enable changing the keyboard octave by holding a key and dragging left or right.
Pitch
Adjust the pitch wheel during playback to change the pitch of the notes.
Keyboard
If the target app has a keyboard, it will be playable on the Mastermind.
And Zignal:
Record audio from other apps and play it in Tabletop with Zignal Interapp Audio Recorder.
Input Source
This menu displays the list of installed compatible apps, with an additional list of Retronyms’ recommended apps. After making a selection, tap the icon to open the app and begin recording. After returning to Tabletop, the audio will start when playback begins.
Edit Audio
This button opens the menu to select the recording mode and provides options to Cut/Copy/Paste/Clear the pattern.
How do you set the number of beats to record on the IAA recorder?
@mgmg4871: I haven't had a chance to test it myself, but this video shows an example of it being used:
I don't believe it gives you a count-in, but starts recording as soon as you begin playing. If anyone can confirm or deny, I'd appreciate it.
Also, if you'd like to record an IAA synth in Tabletop without Zignal, there's this option:
Thanks @PHANTASM. I'll post here as I sort it out.
Looks like it's just a 2 bar loop with overdubbing and audiocopy.
Can you control any apps via virtual midi with the free midi thingy or only IAM apps?
@mgmg4871: Is the recording BPM aware? As in, will it record longer for an 80bpm 2-bar loop than a 140 bpm 2-bar loop? Is the recording triggered when it detects an audio signal?
just upgraded tabletop now on ios6 and don't see either of the new modules - also getting lots of crackling and hickups. oh well - this will be of more use once i finally upgrade to ios7 in a month or two.
@PHANTASM Yes it is bpm aware. Recording is control from the IAA panel. Click record for standby, record begins when you click play button.
@Syrupcore As far as I know you can't control other apps outside of Tabletop.
@Halftone: The new devices require inter-app audio, which is iOS 7 only.
Question for Tabletop users: is the BOOMROOM reverb device high quality? I already own AUFX:Space, but having a high quality reverb inside of TT would be convenient.
Honestly I have spent a lot of time in table top lately , I like the routing of the devices , the Fx sounds great.

@mgmg4871 TT defaults to a two bar loop but you really need the Triggerator to set individual loop lengths, copy, paste, resort loops etc.,
@Syrupcore TT now uses IAA to control and record other apps in and out of its own environment
I wonder what how this will work with Audiobus once she is IAA enabled ?
Sounds like it could open up lots more options especially for apps without IAA but that are Audiobus compatible......
Anyone getting the following with IAA when opening from Tabletop?
Alchemy having to load twice before it opens in tabletop and audio is terrible,
iMini won't load at all,
Nave audio is terrible,
Nlog Pro no sound,
Galileo no sound,
Magellan no sound and this message......
"Alert: Another app Is controlling Hardware sample rate, this devices sample rate is currently being controlled by another app. This caused Magellan to deactivate. To re-enable Magellan please set the hardware sample rate to 44100.0 Hz in all other apps. If this is not possible, please close all other apps by opening the multi taks bar."
When I press ok to the above message it just keeps popping back up !
Oh dear
Any ideas ?
Close all apps from the multitask. Open the host app first (the app you want to dictate the buffer size), then try opening the others again?
By the way, I did notice when using IAA and Mobile Music Sequence with Alchemy, that Alchemy got stuck running in the background draining the battery on the phone, even tho it was closed from the multitask. I had to do a hard reset to kill it. So if you have an app that shows you what processes that are running, that could help trouble shoot things, since there seems to be some issues with ios 7/IAA (or maybe just MMS or Alchemy, i dunno)
This is wierd....
Now the sound is ok but there seems to be an issue with iMini its intermittent and still doesn't work although you can use this within tabletop anyhow.
Nave seems to be glitchy too in terms of staying in the midi controller and not disappearing all together......
More experimentation needed....
If you want to change a Bar Number you must open Triggeretor and up-right you can set you favorite number of your loop...
For Who have problem with Terrible Audio & message in Magellan...you mast delete Tabletop and reinstall, but First make your backup...
Only app I've had an issue with since IAA is Alchemy, it's never worked right for me but iMini and other work just fine
Just loaded up a saved project on tabletop with Magellan, Nlog, Gallileo & Alchemy as nodes and when the project finished loading the apps disappeared from each of the midi mastermind units.
Definetly some opportunity for improvement....
@JMSexton I just noticed the problems with audio may have been due to me recording and playing whilst introducing new nodes.
@JMSexton the only app with issues is Alchemy. I also noticed that when you use a external midi control keyboard and try to record a secession Master Mind does not recognize the midi from the controller.
Has anyone else had this issue.
Mastermind works only on channel 1
@Sinapsya have you been able to use your midi keyboard to play and record in Mastermind
