  • I use my midi keyboard. You have to go to midi learn and touch the keyboard on bottom. It will illuminate green when you touch a note on your midi keyboard.

@Sinapsya have you been able to use your midi keyboard to play and record in Mastermind

Yes, you need to learn keyboard you want to use with your controller...

  • Just so I understand clearly, are these two new TT devices the only way to leverage IAA in TT? Or can you do some IAA 'stuff' in TT without using either of these devices?

  • edited October 2013

@Rhism- AFAIK these two new devices are the only way to use IAA in Tabletop, the IAA CC device is free and the sampler thing/loop recorder is 4.99 both act as host for IAA instruments

  • Although you can use all of the effects with IAA, and everything can be mixed into the recorder.

  • Sheer brilliance. I have new-found respect for Retronyms right this minute. And I wish to them joy, and happiness.

This app is top notch. Really inspiring workflow. The IAA keyboard and loop recorder open up possibilities that weren't possible previously.

Now all they need is an IAA effect unit so I can use the AUFX apps in Tabletop.

  • This is now my favorite music app on iOS... and I haven't even used it yet! wide-eyed with wonder

  • Heavy sarcasm.

  • @mgmg4871 Nope, I mean every word of that. Zero sarcasm. Huge respect for Retronyms.

  • edited October 2013

@Rhism: Is that sarcasm? The IAA devices are nicely done. Yes, the IAA loop recorder could be cheaper considering its spartan feature set, but Tabletop isn't an inexpensive app to begin with. That said, I'm getting my money's worth. I haven't touched BM2 (my usual DAW) in several days.

    Edit: Beaten by mgmg4871.

Question for iMPC owners: Is it worth buying if I'm not composing hip hop or other beat-driven music? I get by with the XOX drum sequencer just fine right now, I'm just curious if it has some benefits I'm overlooking.

  • It's an anagram of Merry Snot, by the way...

  • @PHᐃNTᐃSM Not sarcasm in any way - I'm speaking very sincerely, though I'm intentionally being cryptic so it may seem like sarcasm :) I think if you're happy with the app, then it is priced at exactly the right amount.

@PaulB And now we can never un-know that...

  • @Rhism You must have a device with a LOT of space. :-) I'm not a huge fan of this app. Granted, the last time I tried it, it didn't come with a lot.... Now that it can host instruments, it may be worth actually looking at to see if it has any value to me, but it will have to wait until I have another tablet that can actually fit the entire app on it. I don't know, I'm pretty skeptical.......

  • Guitarism for Tabletop?

  • And I never liked the sound of any of the default instruments that came with it.....

  • @Audiojunkie I've never bought / used / downloaded TT. My (very sincere) comments are coming from an entirely different angle :)

  • Looks like Guitarism for Tabletop is going to be there by default once Guitarism has IAA. :-)

  • It's kind of a brilliant move on Retronyms parts by releasing the two IAA host devices to be able to use any instrument outside of TT inside. Although Audiobus would still be nice if/when implemented into TT, at least it's not a locked up shell anymore. Also, a lot of people don't like TT because of how it started out being priced plus including IAPs but they've changed there model and the user base they do have is very loyal

  • @Rhism: I'm curious what this "entirely different angle" is. Can you share any more?

  • Just re-loaded it, since I removed it to recover some space months ago. I had never really given it a fair shake before, although I don't think it was nearly as good a fit for me prior to IAA. Looks promising.

  • I think Retronyms focused their energy on ways to implement IAA rather than criticism.

  • @PHᐃNTᐃSM Describing it might ruin it. But I'll try.

Starbucks made an empire selling something for $5 that used to cost $1 in other places. Some people scoffed that it was a rip-off, but Starbucks customers were very happy to pay $5, and kept coming back even when the $1 option was available right next door. I respect and admire Starbucks in creating that market and that demand, monetizing that happiness and sense of customer satisfaction, and ultimately creating a lot of value in the industry as a result.

Apple made an empire selling things for much more than they are priced elsewhere. People who don't like Apple products say that Apple fans are blind sheep who like to throw money away for no good reason. But Apple fans are very happy with their purchases, even if it costs a little bit more. We don't feel like we're being scammed or ripped off. We are paying extra for certain intangibles that we value. I respect and admire Apple for all those same reasons as Starbucks (and more).

For the last several months I've been on a mini-crusade to try to understand, and in some small way influence, the general backlash around IAPs for "basic" things like MIDI, AB, ACP, etc. So when IAA came out I figured most people would expect IAA to be free in all music apps, not something you pay for. And I think that's mostly true - if AB were to add IAA support as an IAP, maybe many folks here wouldn't mind but in general there would be a lot of complaints and bad reviews. People expect stuff like this to be 'included'.

Along comes Retronyms and they add support for IAA, apparently for free. But then they also added two new 'devices' to the TableTop experience, which can be used to enhance your TT-IAA work. One of those is a nifty keyboard thing which they made completely free - which is pretty cool since it's a very useful keyboard that they probably worked pretty hard on. Another one is an audio recording device that they're charging for, but from what I can tell people are happy to pay for it. From what I can tell, both these devices are actually essential to do anything useful with IAA in TT. So effectively they have made IAA an IAP. But people are happy with it, because it's packaged and presented in a way that is appealing to customers, and is a good purchase experience. In fact, now people are hoping they'll do more IAA devices in TT, such as an IAA effect unit, and perhaps that could also be worth paying for.

I may be mistaken in all this, but I think Retronyms may have just become the Starbucks of music apps. And that is an awesome thing, because we could really use a Starbucks-like leader to add value to this little industry of ours.

  • Actually you can accomplish the same thing without the new IAA audio recorder, using the TT recorder.

Yes but Zignal is Looper like Loopy....is more useful then Recorder.......and I'm happy to pay for make continuos Work From TT team.

  • @mgmg4871 I see, so that means TT can do 'IAA stuff' without the 2 new devices then?

  • @Rhism I said it can record without the new audio recorder. Of course it needs Mastermind to open IAA compatible apps.

  • @mgmg4871 ah got it, you did say that earlier too. Interesting as that tweet posted above seems to imply this could have been an oversight? Doubt that. Ok maybe I was all wrong about this :)

  • Anyone got Nave working stable alongside other IAA apps in TT ?

    For me it keeps unloading....

  • Guys, I have playeyed with Tabletop quite a lot, I have imini and iMPC. I always liked it, but now with the IAA it is awesome. The fact that it saves the external app you used and the patch, and then when you open table top again it remembers that, and plays the patch without actually opening the app is brilliant. I did a little tune last night with Magellan, iMini and iMPC on my iPad mini, and it worked fine!! I think that it can just load the background workings of the app and not the gui, if you double click you can see Magellan was not open. Brilliant!!
