One: Did you know before you started this piece that there'd be no words?

Pretty much yes, although about mid-way through the month I did have an attempt at trying to shoehorn some kind of vocal on it one weekend when the house was quiet. It didn't work as I couldn't find the right feel/mood.

    @JohnnyGoodyear said:
Last question: Was it actually quite a relief?

Yes it fucking was. I felt a lot less pressure without having to deal with vocals... And everything was easier.

Thanks for the feedback. One advantage of not having vocals is that it leaves a lot more freedom with structure, since you don't need to have the verse/chorus thing going. Theoretically you should be able to have this kind of evolving structure with vocals too, but it's much harder to pull off. Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" is about the only song I've ever heard that manages to pull it off well.

My Life In the Bush of Ghosts, I've not heard that one - YouTubeing it now.

Two: How much did you pay @MonzoPro to come by and make all the gibbering noises?

The sum of ten pounds was mentioned, along with a pint of Drummond’s Old Frothage, though both have yet to materialise. I’ve already contacted The Gibberers Union regarding this matter.

I already told you the cheque was in the post. I'm still annoyed that you asked for ten pounds rather than a share of the royalties though.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I like the melancholic feeling in your song. A song is always more interesting when you know the story behind it. Thanks for sharing your story. Your voice fits the song very well.

Irie indeed. V. nice cover. Plenty of the reggae root, but I love the (very gentle) circus-type sounds. Also really like the shouty almost-toasting concrete jungle vox bits. Main vox is lovely. Bob would give you the nod on this one.

Thanks @JohnnyGoodyear . I tried changing the chorus a little bit to give the song a contrast to the "soft" singing part.

Ah. Essential part of the canon. Have to do that tricky thing of listening AND remembering when it was put out. Still one of my favourite/most influential albums...don't actually listen to it that much anymore, but I think about it often.

I'm happy to report that SOTMC has had exactly the effect I was hoping for in terms of productivity. I started the month plunking out a new tune on a banjo (have the voice memo recording for posterity) and spent the ensuing time learning how to use BM3 as a full-fledged recording tool in addition to composing/arranging/refining the tune. The homage to both @Shaken&;Stirred and 10CC are entirely intentional.

First off, and no small matter, great title.

Love the banjo. Please do a cover of 'For The Turnstiles'.

Def. left field, slightly mad. I like the choice you made at the end. I was expecting, even hoping, for the whole thing to spin out of control, but the laundry/snoring samples are just right.

As is the way of that we most admire, I want more. The surreal but the personal revelation also.

  • I'm slack.
I have not yet given feedback to anyone for this month's SOMC. All of this season's holiday stuff really gets in the way of life. However, I will refrain from going all E. Scrooge here; that is for another time and place.
Anyway...I promise to get my song comments in during this coming week.
    Thank you for your patience,
    JeffC

I’m still kicking myself after seeing how well the single’s doing.

  • And I also need to apologise for the delay in vid commenting. Began the sesh recording on location yesterday morning, dropped the Rode USB mic, spent the day/night/cleaning/ aggressively crying, and now on editing todays attempts... well, the drop must be the cause for crackles on the soundtrack. Whatever comes out.... comes out. Thought a vice would hold it to a lapel. Stupidly designed :)

As much as everyone loves your video reviews, I’m sure we all appreciate how much work goes into them. They are a work of art themselves.
You should give yourself a month or so off occasionally, as I imagine that they are extremely time consuming!

Thanks Def. Appreciate that. Going to watch MOTD and then get back to it. Mind, that’ll raise temperatures as well..... :)

Thanks mister. I'm quite happy with progress made using the sampler in arrangements but not so happy about the thinness of the writing in this tune. The metaphor is ripe to take deeper but I spent my time elsewhere this month. No matter, there's always next month! Off to learn the banjo part in for the turnstiles...

  • @Bluepunk hope the mic's OK and no permanent damage. I'll echo defrobot and say that with the business of having to write a song every month, and then on top of that having to do a video review of every single entry, SOTMC has basically taken over your entire life.

We. your fans, are known to be demanding, but under the circumstances I am willing to let you have the occasional homework pass.

  • Thanks Richard. It’s the addict in me. Mic in hospital and not terminal. Cheers.

Where do you all write your songs? A topic for next year perhaps. All bar one of mine were written sat on two lovely logs at the beautiful beach....WERE.

It began so well on Friday morning, lots of love and loss. Balance. Thought Lord Word and his tune/words fitted the occasion. Then (no connection to The Club) Mic murders, Alcatel arsed, Luma locked, resulting in having to use stock tracks in place of yours. I am so sorry. Oh, as the vid progresses, so does the vid/audio lag.

Good News. At 05.16 hrs this morning at the beach, I found her, a new drift log to write songs with. Dragged it, hid it, alarmed it and armed it. Need a name please.

Love and Loss, and Love again. :)

    The man scarves.

Quite brilliant and exhausting (especially for you). I wonder how many words are actually used in this fast-fire 8 minutes. A novel before you know it.

Christmas jumpers are quite a thing around here. Have to look into it.

Much as I love your reviews (and I do), I was yet more taken with the Log Obit. I think you should focus on cod-attenborough slices of everyday life. England's must trusted man etc. It's all there for you matey.

  • Brilliance again, @Bluepunk. Killing me. Thanks for taking the time to do that. :D

  • I don't know if I'm more bedazzled by @Bluepunk writing and locutionary genius or the generosity of spirit, time, and effort required to produce such a video. Either way, I'm grateful for having the luxury of watching that video. And I agree with @JohnnyGoodyear that the log bit was the best part (bookended by the recitative in the review of Jeff's song).

Sid is still counting...tell you next month. YES sorry, that was countrychristmasist of me and I’m sure you too have cent centres that sell Noel nonsenses over at your end of the bridge. Thank you and shall look into evolving into Puncle Jack Hargreaves next year. :)

No sir, thank YOU for reviewing without song this month. :)

Thank you so very much Luke. I had to google a couple of your words (that shows you I know very little about them) and thanks because I want to learn more. There is only one genius when it comes to words in The Club and we are incredibly lucky to have him here. Back to your song because I forgot to say that you have set yourself a very high bar comrade. Like that. Thanks again. :)

  • @fattigman very nice cover, and you've got a great voice. The production is very good (vocals could come up a notch though) and it's very nicely executed. Oh and did I mention your great voice?

And now that the epic video reviews have arrived, the month can officially be put to bed. It's worth writing a song just to get a mention in the video! Epic.

  • @fattigman top notch rendition of a great tune! I liked the vibe and the singing was right on the money... well done.

@Janosax the sax is the star of the show (for good reason) but I thought your backing loops were inventive and added just the right feel to the whole she-bang. You've motivated me to try a whole production done more/less live in AUM at some point!

  • @studs1966 and @lukesleepwalker thank you very much. I was late to the SOTMC november so I haven't had the time to listen to all contributions. I want to give each song a couple of listening so I can give a fair feedback.
