Thanks man! I appreciate the kind words. I dig that old ska stuff, but never had the pleasure of playing ska in any bands I've been in. About the bridge at 2:00 - I had concerns that maybe that goes on longer than it should, so I'm glad to hear you like it. Cheers!
I finally realized who your vice reminds me of: REM. What a great song. This is a truly brilliant mix and arrangement. All the little transitions just drive it along perfectly. Perfectly. Fabulous stuff..
Hey, thanks for listening and the thoughts. Hope to share and contribute more here!
Very nice piece! I'm not much of a critic of classical pieces. Growing up, classical music was always something by bassoonist big sister listened to, that would send me running for my guitar and Van Halen albums! That said, this sounds good to me. For me, of the two, I actually like the violin sound better than the piano. I would maybe have preferred a richer piano that filled out the bottom end more. I also notice a couple held notes on the violin where I expected vibrato to kick in, but didn't. Again, I'm far from an expert, but he seems those string players always add that to the held notes, so I've come to expect it. Anyway, thank for sharing this, nice work!
Bummer! I was really hoping for some disco sleigh bells!
seriously, this sounds good. After listening to it, I read @rickwaugh 's comment about the vocals being a bit too loud at the beginning. That didn't strike me, but I thought the vocals around 1:50 might be a bit too quiet, so go figure! Nice work, and merry Christmas!
Cheers mate. Your right about the vocals. I had I little trouble balancing the vocals in the mix. But I'm not complaining. The acapella was free. I thought about the Sliegh bells sound, but I didn't want it to sound like too Diana Ross "Best of Motown Christmas Songs".
Hey, welcome! Glad you took the leap. It always "feels weird" to me too, but especially here, sharing creations has always been a very positive experience for me.
I had the same thoughts as others about the tonalities that seemed like they might be off. I'm not a jazz guy at all, so some of it may be lost on me, but I think including some repeating melody lines that don't require some much focus from the listener to "get" my help engage the listener more. The mix is real good though, and the sounds work well together. Looking forward to what you'll bring in January!
Yes, it's unfortunate that I can't get different sound libraries into Notion, and switch, because that's normally what you do to get whatever you want, at the right spots. But now that I think of it, I'll have to see if there is a vibrato marker that I can use. There's staccato, accents, I can make it louder or software. Will have to check that out.
wow man, this really kicks butt! very nice work! So much going on, but never feels like too much. Mix of sounds and textures are great - highs, lows, clean, dirt, left-side, right-side, it's all there and done well. I'd say you are a Gadget Master!
Hey! Thanks. Good points about the repeating melody lines and also that jazzy stuff. I agree with you, and others, that the keys sound weird at first. I guess I'm just used to it after listening to it over and over. I'm not a jazzy person either but I wanted to play (or mimic) that style while making this track. I like it this way but I definitely understand how it sounds weird. And thanks for the compliment on the mix. Right after I uploaded, it sounded like there was too much reverb on some of the instruments and I'm still not sure. But I guess it kind of works OK because there is not too much going on.
Also, I was just checking out your track when I got the notification! I couldn't make my mind about the sound of the drum kit used but overall, sounds good! Which synth did you use for the melody starting at 2:14?
wow Rick, thanks for the kind words! I've always liked REM, so that's nice to hear. Funny, another "Rick" made a comment on the track in soundCloud last night likening it to REM, so maybe this track in particular has a little more "Stipe-ish" vibe. Cheers!
Thanks! That synth you mentioned is Kauldron. Started with the preset "Sacred Mushroom". There is some Turnado at work there, and maybe some other effects as well.
Did not expect to hear such serious compliments dude
I'm trying to get away from the monotonous Gadget patterns
I'm glad to hear that I'm getting a little bit
Thank you!
@rickwaugh I like the fact this piece is quite accessible and easy to listen to. You establish a melodic theme with the violin and then explore variations on it, but you don't stray so far that it becomes bewildering.
I think technically the piece is good, lots of melodic invention and variation, what I would like to hear though (as always) is some more emotion - maybe more of a swell or crescendo as the piece evolves because it seems to be stuck in the same place feel-wise from start to end, so I don't get much of a sense of story or journey along the way, aside form the variations in the melody.
As for the violin sound: there's nothing really wrong with it, but it could maybe do with a little more in the way of dynamics: more of a physical sense of the bow scraping the strings etc... It's perfectly OK really, just lacks a tiny bit of character.
@richardyot, yes, there’s the rub, getting that feel into midi acoustic instruments. I’m going to have to mess more with the midi once it’s in Auria. The structure is a standard sonata structure, so follows the norms of statement, variation, etc. There were lots of key changes, but I certainly could have used more tempo/feel changes.
Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully I haven’t driven folks off of submitting this month, as the don’t want to comment on a classical piece.
alright guys i am back in town from travels.. i been a little confused... my last entry got mixed reviews. i got a sounds tighter and more on point but its just not what i was expecting it to be feeling from it.. even a request to be more off than on.. ill be back on a track and listening to all your songs ...
I agree....... +1.
@Shaken&Stirred Hello mate, well I have to say, I think this is a great track. The lyrics are weird and wonderful, great imagery. Well sung! (although maybe the transition, just before the last chorus is just a little bit off?? Not 100% on that..just caught my attention is all.)
My fave thing though is the mix. It just sounds very pro! Well done on that mate. Everything is crisp and clear and not a bit of mud in sight...in sound? Haha! U know what I’m getting at.
Great job man.
Hey Leo, this track sounds great, it's very polished, your voice is fantastic, the lyrics are well written, and the production is spot on. Radio ready, very nice work!
I will say, the vibe of the original version is more my style, but the song shines as a ballad as well.
I do have some constructive (I hope) criticism - stuff to think about, a suggestion I might "throw out there" if we were in the studio and I was producing this...
I listened to it multiple times over a few days, and something about the hook/chorus didn't feel right.. it wasn't hooking me as it should. The first two lines are great, but the "starting down the sun/every battle won" bit, they way they are dragged out, I think it causes the chorus to lose momentum a bit. So my suggestion would be to leave the first chorus as it is, since the song hasn't picked up yet, but for the second and third choruses, combine the third and fourth lines into one, to keep the momentum up, and then the "those were the days..." would be the fourth line of the chorus.
Another idea might be to only do that on the 3rd chorus, make it a double chorus, and it would be a bit shorter, and would serve to further etch the hook in the listener's ear. And then maybe omit the bit that starts at 3:32 to keep it under 4 minutes. With this option you might have to move some of River's bits to the break after the second chorus!
Anyway, I hope this provided a tiny bit of useful food for though. Once again, a superb job on this, and I look forward to more from you next month!
Thanks Leo, I appreciate the kind words, very nice feedback! I think you're referring to the transition from the bridge to the final double-chorus. Yeah, that was a tough one, maybe I didn't get it quite right. I did one of those reverse delay things -
...and getting it all lined up was more of a challenge then I expected.
thanks again, cheers!
@Shaken&Stirred Thanks so much buddy for your very useful feedback. I appreciate you taking the time.

Downriver started as a sketch I was working on using Auxy on my iPhone while wandering solo around Brussels and Amsterdam in 2016. I reworked the core ideas quite a few times in the following months while I travelled, eventually morphing it into a more old-school breakbeat style of track.
Ultimately I ended up keeping the main drums, bassline, and background melodies almost exactly as they were from the initial Auxy sketches. Those were exported into Ableton Live 10, where I added some background pads and distorted chords from my DSI OB-6 and Ableton’s Wavetable synth. Some additional percussion samples were added from my sample library to round out the rhythmic elements. The guitar is my Taylor 814ce acoustic being processed by a TC Electronic Hall of Fame Reverb, as well as Ableton’s Echo and Pedal devices. Final volume and dynamics control was done with DMG’s Limitless.
Hope you enjoy,
Tarekith

I liked the composition, but yeah that violin sound was a bit flat for me. There's not much going on in terms of articulations, so it felt a little one dimensional to me.
Not bad at all for your first song! I wasn't really getting the folk aspect that much, but nice groovey jazz vibes for sure.
Happy times! The vocal feels a but loud for me in places, but that's par for the course for disco I think.
This was has a nice psychedelic vibe to it, especially with the lead synths. The low end felt a bit light to me though, not much thump going on with the drums or bass.
Cool, sort of a new wave and punk vibe to this one. The main vocal was really loud for me personally, would have liked to hear it a little further back in the mix.
Thanks Erik, I appreciate the feedback. Yeah, lead vocal levels are hard to get right, when you, as the mixing engineer, are also the "talent" (a term I use loosely) I often import one or two reference tracks into Auria, for comparison against the my final mix, to help get it right, but still not always successful. thanks again.
Thanks for the feedback.
I love this. Everything sounds really good, especially the percussion stuff and the guitar. Acoustic guitar adds a lot, and it sounds almost like a santur. Did you record it with a piezo or a mic?
Piezo, I always use that for recording since it’s so convenient.
