I think Mister @DefRobot has it exactly right, that almost fallen apart feel, but less strung out, more the afternoon after. Perhaps more of a sketch in places, but has a cool sixty-something vibe.

@Jocphone and @Bluepunk, best Christmas tune of the year. Nasty and sweet all at the same time. Punk lives. Love the interplay in the vocals.

Thanks Rick, such a high accolade! Of course, being of the alternative persuasion, we had to go and post it after the big day. Didn’t want to deprive Master Sheeran of his royalties this year.

@Bluepunk displays such mastery and ingenuity with his vocals that I want explore that interplay much further this year.

Thanks for the comment and a Happy New Year to you.

  • @LostBoy85 I haven't heard the original but I was thinking how great this sounds. I was also thinking "I wish" (I wish could make something like this). Being a vocals man I just love the vocals. It is sentimental and kinda bought a tear to my eye...job done.

  • @studs1966 Some festive disco to warm the winter nights. It's a fun track, more disco fusion than pure disco IMO, I have a whole bunch of these jazzy disco type tracks garnered from compilations over the years, and I like the mix of old and new - it's not house or EDM, but something with an older and more soulful vibe.

  • @Shaken&;Stirred I'm reading this one as a critique on trickle-down economics, which are probably a talking point stateside right now thanks t the infamous tax cuts. Maybe I'm way off, but the lyrics can certainly be interpreted that way.

This one feels more alt-rock (or indie as we call it in the UK) because the electronic drums are less prominent in the mix and it also feels less "rock" than some of your previous entries. It's a good sound and a direction that seems to suit you well. Vocals are good and fit the song well.

All in all a good track, and it's interesting to see how your sound is evolving over the months.

  • @Tarekith this is a great track. It has a dark and brooding, but catchy, groove/riff that is a real earworm, and compelling atmosphere, very interesting instrumentation and arrangement (all beautifully crafted) and the acoustic guitar is really lovely, in a non-obvious and quite original way. Well done.

@lukesleepwalker I really like this - apart from one small thing, namely that the vocal delivery, especially at the start, is a little bit hammy. But otherwise it's a very good track, well-written, and well-performed and produced.

You've got an excellent voice, that just needs a tad more restraint in parts, and I really liked some of the instrumentation: the electric piano, the laid back drums at the start, and the guitar that comes in as a call-and-response part with some of the vocals. The busier drums in the second half work a little less well, something like the GB Drummer might have been better suited to this track.

The vocal melody is really good, and makes the song very compelling. Overall it's an excellent song that grows in appeal the longer it goes on.

Thank you, sir. What warms my heart is that there are no guitars on this track (the fakery is complete!)... As for the singing, I love your commentary as it speaks to the struggle I have right now. As a singer, I've always sung slightly out of my range (higher) and developed some character over the 30+ years I've been warbling along. In the last few weeks, I've been transitioning to my "old man voice" and singing in my lower natural range, and quite honestly, I am relearning how to sing. That is, I can hit the notes down lower but I'm still trying to find my "voice" down there. The fact that you picked up that I'm not quite there is very helpful--so thank you. I'll keep at it.

Something that I've only come to realise in recent months is that much of singing is actually stylistic, rather than just technical or ability-based. Kurt Cobain, Sam Beam, Tracey Thorn, Tom Waits: all highly stylised singers that don't use standard singing technique but rather something quite artificial that not only sounds good but suits the emotion of their music. Even really good singers like Marvin Gaye or Sarah McClachlan use a lot of stylistic flourishes in their singing (vocal fry, falsetto for emphasis, breathiness etc).

On a technical level your voice is really really good, you can really sing. I think you just need to find the right feel and style: volume, delivery, emotion etc...

  • @JohnnyGoodyear an understated piece, with the vocals (and the words) front and centre. You like these fragments of songs, you've written a few of them over the years. It might be interesting to string a few of them together into an Abbey Road B-side style medley, like a melancholy Beatles for ageing intellectuals (a huge untapped market there surely).

The pads and vocal pads/samples in the background are very nice, but the vocals might be a bit too high in the mix - it would be good to be able to hear the music a tad more clearly.

You're absolutely right (yer git) about the mix. I had it all planned out, but the crossfading between the two different pieces went all askew and I ended up flattening everything into one file (mostly one part accident, two parts stupidity). Shouldn't really be allowed near any of the buttons. Amazing really how much I've completely ruined, broken, lost, deleted over the years. ANYWAY, I sort of like your idea about a melancholy medley, but then that itself would take some fiddling about probably beyond my skillset etc.

As regards 'fragments', I've given this a lot of thought and am guessing they come from having more of a poetry background than a songwriter one. I write what it is and then that's it. And usually quite short. Probably why I was drawn to poems in the first place; forces/allows me to say what I want without the usual rambling. I suppose a pro songman would simply add more words or make more music to pad around the words I have....all ongoing. Have to apologize in advance and admit that I sang a New Year's Poem (an old one) again this New Year's Day and it's reasonably short. If I can get that mixed better I will likely submit it for January as well....

Hope this year is good to you, that the childbirth of building is put behind you, and you find yourself in a steady, happy spot.

Meet “Futuro”, the newest superhero in the hood (in this case, “hood” means the Milky Way):

This music video was again made with footage from a public domain movie to create a short movie, a webisode of sorts, in fact a Flash Gordon movie /TV show - Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe (1940) - and it’s my tribute the old sci fi TV shows and old sci fi movies I watched when I was a kid, with silent movie-styled intertitles explaining the “story”.

Hey, this was really fun, I enjoyed it. That driving, foot tapping synth melody is great! I like how you integrated the various guitar styles - it all works! you're playing is as articulate, and impressive as ever, nice work! The only thing I might try to address is the Spanish guitar part seems to sit on top of the rest of the mix. It seems it might be able to be blended a bit better so it sits within it. I listened through my monitoring headphones; in the room it might not be as much of an issue. Otherwise, this is great!

Oh.. I know you're a hardcore Auria guy, are the synths Twin 2? they sound really good.

Hey you guys. Late, late entry. Wrote a Christmas song, half recorded it. Didn’t like it
Then all sorts of things went wrong in life. Hey ho.
Dug this old tune up. Tweaked it, chopped it, remixed. I’ve not had time to properly master it and I know the EQs are all over the place, but wanted at least an entry.
Will do my best to review all entries over the next few days. X

I love the intro here - it sounds like it's going to be some electo/edm thing, only to get blindsided by the wall of guitars! Very effective at getting the listener's attention. Then the lyrics start, which I like. Verses are good with the back and forth vocal thing still holding the listeners interest... Then the chorus which is very catchy, good hook, vocal stacks are well done, sound huge and add excitement which is just what you want in a chorus. Then the guitar solo comes in, followed by the chunky breakdown, and I'm a guitar guy, but at this point I found myself starting to drift. The first 2:08 is great, but the second 2:08 is mostly instrumental, except for one more run though of the chorus. IMHO, there just isn't enough new there to stay engaged. I think this could be edited down to closer to 3 minutes to have a very catchy tune leaving the listener wanting more. I really like your style, and sound, great work on this.

Oh, I hope the "all sorts of things went wrong in life." where minor, and easily corrected. Cheers!

Well, put simply, this is compelling. The song is good, the arrangement works, and the dueling vocals work like peanut butter and chocolate. The only thing that I wanted was the second half of the song to lift just slightly—something new to propel us to the excellent surprise ending. Maybe a polyrhythm or a jittery arp? Anyway, loved this one.

  • @DefRobot Very solid rocker. I thought the guitars were close but need just a tweak or two to power the mix. Vocals are top notch! It’s noteworthy that I thought the intro and outro were worthy of more time and attention. I guess it’d be tough to interleave with the driving rock vibe but I’d be interested in how those more atmospheric parts might meld with the middle? Good stuff, always enjoy listening to your monthly installments.

  • @richardyot For “tossed together” not bad at all. Recalls some of Air’s more atmospheric pieces in parts (and that’s a compliment)—nicely interwoven textures and sounds. You have a real feel for how to effectively balance an arrangement. Hope the construction project reaches a quick and satisfying conclusion in 2018!

  • @trackedout I dig this one! It has that early 90’s slacker vibe in spades and it is delivered effortlessly, which is crucial for this sort of thing. The lyrics work for me and so does the arrangement. I half expected a recorder or melodica or even a half assed harmonica toward the end but that would be sprinkles on top. Vocal delivery is spot on. Well done.

Thanks @Shaken&;Stirred it did take a while. There are probably three completely different versions knocking around, was fun trying to get to something that I didn't hate though.

I was thinking about more drastic changes to the second verse but once @Bluepunk added his brilliant vocal plays I felt that adding anymore change would maybe take away from it rather than adding. It's a delicate balance that we strive to achieve..

  • @DefRobot An Anthem! I was marching after ten seconds. I admire your vocals and especially the secondary/harmonies. Beyond singing abilities I think some folks just kill the harmonies better than others. Yours are lovely. Was put in mind (beyond the raindrop nod to 10CC) of Pixies, albeit a faintly more affirmative version. I can completely imagine 2,000 people in a club signing along with that chorus and losing their minds. I'd be there.

  • Been free-diving for the month of December. Can’t hold breath any longer. Is it over? Good. Apologies folks. Reviews this weekend. Time to wake, stretch and have a dance to this mesmerising mix of mince pies and methadone:

This track has a very organic feel to me, meaning not super polished and as if it were produced decades ago, which is very cool, IMO. It reminds me of something you'd find as a bonus track in a boxed set - a demo version of a song that later went on to become a hit. maybe because of the background noise, or the lack of drums. Anyway, very nice work!

  • @richardyot said:
OK so I'm a little out of the loop, been a really crazy time here, so I owe a fair few reviews and have had precious little time to do anything this month. I'm posting this mainly just to say I showed up, and that's what counts. It's nothing special, just ticking the box.

Hey, Kudos for getting something posted, given the sitch. I hope the remodel is sticking to schedule, at or below budget. This sounds nice, nice melodic theme. The instruments play well together and it's mixed well too! cheers!

Thank you sir, I'm always interested to hear your feedback. yeah, I dialed back the overdrive and density of the guitar tracks on this one, which I guess has given it more R.E.M.-like quality that a couple have mentioned. You are, in fact "way off" on the meaning behind the lyrics, it's more personal than that, as I responded to Mr. Goodyear's comments a couple pages north in this thread. It's more about where my two teenage sons are at in life, and what they will do next.

  • @lukesleepwalker said:
@Shaken&;Stirred another strong tune this month. Like you, I really like the QuatroMod Diffusor effect on the guitar; has a really nice vibe that fits the song perfectly. I'm going to show my personal listening preferences, but the song really came alive for me in the bridge. The bridge is just fantastic with the Turnado glitchiness funking things up--to me, that part leaps out of the speakers and demands that the listener pay attention. I get that you don't want to interrupt the flow in the other parts, but I'd love to hear a bit more of that glitchiness in the other sections. Good lyrics, too, per usual. The Candyland reference was the hook that immediately grabbed me--love that one.

Thanks man, yeah, I like those glitched breaks too. I've done that on a few tracks, usually as an afterthought and then wish I would have gone there sooner, so I think we're on the same page there!

  • @theconnactic said:
Really good, @Shaken&;Stirred, the mix is cristal clear and the production values are top notch. Your voice really stood out, but everything is well done and in its place. Bravo!

thanks, I really appreciate this. It's hard for me to objectively listen to my stuff and determine how the production quality measures up, so I find your comments very helpful.

As others have mentioned, R.E.M. lies in this tune. Mostly for the guitar line and vocal melody in the Lemonade stand chorus bit. But you’ve got your unique sound to go with all that. The breakdown is great. The repeated chorus to the end works well. Wasn’t mad on the sudden end, but overall, this is great.

Haha, I moved to South Carolina a year ago, and maybe being so close to Athens, GA is starting to have in impact on my writing! :) I've always been a fan of that band, so I'm happy with that comparison. ...and yeah, I dunno if I'm crazy about that ending either - wasn't sure what to do there. Thanks for your feedback!
