Just got caught up on What We Do In The Shadows. Yes, it’s incredibly good and hilarious.

Great comment @MonzoPro, and Somehow brought to mind Withnail and I, especially the ‘perfumed ponce’ scene.

Yes, Mister Monz was very evocative there. Stoke indeed.

As for Withnnail, when that came out in 87 it was an unerring portrait in many ways of the existence my flatmate and I were living in London....strangely it took me a few years to recognize that it was all terribly sad and that he was Marwood and, well, that I wasn't. Contributed to me leaving the country in search of a different ending, and for that I will always be grateful (and will always love that film).

Must watch that again, haven’t seen it for ages. Danny could be several of my friends, particularly during the ‘Camberwell carrot scene’.

Stoke. Yes. My time there made Blackstuff look like the swinging 60’s. Grim. And several times I encountered gangs with very long knives, who wanted to ‘chop up the cockney’. Fortunately I was tougher than my early Garcia appearance might have suggested. Had an interesting experience in the dole office too, when they stopped my benefits for no reason. A sideways anecdote - in Basildon, where I was from originally we all had to stop signing on at the office, as a gang of skinheads had flattened it by jumping up and down on the roof.

I was only in Stoke a year before escaping to Wales. Previous to that I lived in a small van for a year, which was weirdly one of the happiest times of my life.

Back on topic: this Grateful Dead series is very good. Loved the bit in the third episode where it stressed ‘never accept a drink from the Grateful Dead’. The crew filming an early 70’s gig didn’t follow that advice, and it was very amusing watching their footage get slowly weirder, and more abstract as the effects kicked in.

  • One Trick Pony
I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Great bleak 70’s film vibe. Stellar cast. The reality of “stardom”
Did I mention the stellar cast already?

So you were Withnail? Lucky you're still going all these years later then!

Yes, remarkable film, and if you watch it at the right age, leaves an indelible impression for life. I must rewatch some time.

    Broadchurch.
Fantastic actors, script, pacing, character development, etc. it reminded me of “The Killing” in a very good way.
Sorry, Scots, but I had to turn on the closed captioning in order to get a lot of Tennant’s dialogue.

Just dived in to the 60s Batman TV show. Loved it as a kid, love it now watching with different eyes.

Broadchurch is one of our favorites. Anything with Tennant is good.

I got a trial of BritBox on Prime so for me it's:
    -I Claudius
    -Lovejoy
-Midsomer Murders (i do like my corn)

4.99 a month! No brainer for me a big fan of UK shows. I'm open to recommendations.

Don't get us started on all the good things you should watch...but I'm trying to think of older shows that might be unknown to you. I also wonder what the range of Britbox is. Two well considered items from the eighties would be The Boys from the Blackstuff and The Monocled Mutineer which starred Paul McGann the year before he was the 'I' in Withnail and I. Anyway, both excellent and high quality bits of work from that period...

Boys from the Blackstuff - possibly one of the best bits of social realism created for TV. As someone on the dole at that time I can confirm how accurate it was.

Gritty, and grim. Harrowing to watch, though I did enjoy the final scene in the pub.

    Shake hands.

I can't think of better television in terms of drama and purpose.

Can’t get either of those 2 suggestions on Prime. Argh.

I have been waiting years and years to see Peter Bogdanovich’s debut feature. It is an astonishing piece of work.
And to think...it was made on a Roger Corman budget and schedule...

  • Just started watching Upload last night, definitely more enjoyable than I expected. It reminds me of a slightly more upbeat version of a Black Mirror episode.

Snowpiercer is another one just starting that I'm enjoying more than I expected. The movie was so unique and quirky, I couldn't see how a TV show would work. But they are definitely taking it on amore long term story arc.

Still watching Sense8 - while the abrupt changes of setting were initially disorienting I'm getting used to them. I like how the various storylines are progressing. I can't believe they waited this long though to play Sigur Ros track in the soundtrack, given that one of the settings is in Iceland and Sigur Ros/Jonsi tracks have been used in other soundtracks.

I looked up the Korean actress and started watching her other Netflix show Kingdom. I'm not really into zombie shows or movies but I'm a sucker for period Asian shows, starting of course with the old Kung Fu Theater.

  • Was talking to Mister @iansainsbury the other day and we muttered about how this was surely art and I figured I hadn't seen it for awhile and was wondering how it stands up. It stands up.

"Get Shorty" on EPIX... It's like a 3 Season binge of Coen Brothers premise. Very funny with a lot of characters in play. I'm 1/2 way through. I wonder if there will be a Season 4.

The show runner did a lot of writing on "Shameless" which is also a family sit com worthy of the Coen Brothers. 8 Seasons on Netflix. #9 on Showtime. They keep almost every actor intact for 9 seasons. Most of theme are kids so it's a bit like binging Harry Potter watching how kids become adults physically... puberty and all that entails.

"The Americans" is probably the best TV show ever made, IMHO. 6 Seasons on Prime Video.

Disagree (and strongly :)) about 'The Americans', but I thought 'Get Shorty' was going to get no more than half an episode of my poor attention, but I ended up gobbling the thing entire. I hope there's more. Chris O'Dowd was/is brilliant.
