Was talking to Mister @iansainsbury the other day and we muttered about how this was surely art and I figured I hadn't seen it for awhile and was wondering how it stands up. It stands up.

My wife and I were just talking about this and I commented that it should be updated after this week. As this country burns ...

Fantastic actors, script, pacing, character development, etc. it reminded me of “The Killing” in a very good way.
Sorry, Scots, but I had to turn on the closed captioning in order to get a lot of Tennant’s dialogue.

Just dived in to the 60s Batman TV show. Loved it as a kid, love it now watching with different eyes.

Broadchurch is one of our favorites. Anything with Tennant is good.

I got a trial of BritBox on Prime so for me it's:
    -I Claudius
    -Lovejoy
-Midsomer Murders (i do like my corn)

4.99 a month! No brainer for me a big fan of UK shows. I'm open to recommendations.

Don't get us started on all the good things you should watch...but I'm trying to think of older shows that might be unknown to you. I also wonder what the range of Britbox is. Two well considered items from the eighties would be The Boys from the Blackstuff and The Monocled Mutineer which starred Paul McGann the year before he was the 'I' in Withnail and I. Anyway, both excellent and high quality bits of work from that period...

He was so very good in Blackstuff. Of course, nobody can die these days suddenly or bar obvious car-crash cause without us thinking of covidity etc. And 68. Seems like nothing. Which also led me, at the bottom of the obituary to the links:

...and thinking about the difference in how much life we all get dished out or don't. An awful lot of mortaity in the air about now...

Yeah, doesn’t seem fair. Both my parents were 68 when they died, no age at all.

He was great in Blackstuff. Apparently the series affected a lot of the actors pretty deeply.

I guess now, more than ever, each extra day is a gift.

Yes it is. Small yet enormous mercies etc. I have always felt that the under/over (for big boys with previously bad habits) could or should be 80. We'll see :)

    Viewer discretion advised.

  • Buddy turned me on to this lecture series, after I complained about bombing a job interview due to my poor knowledge of system design and distributed caching.

The last minute or so is pure gold:

"The most important thing about databases… for the rest of your life, is the following:

When you look back at the 36 Chambers, you have to understand who the original Nine who were involved in it. You have the RZA, the GZA, Inspector Deck, Ghostface Killah… Method Man, Old Dirty Bastard, and Raykwon"

  • recently my wife & I have been binge re-watching "Six Feet Under" (HBO). It's the 3rd time we've watched the series through. I always forget how brilliant this show is. It often deals with some very heavy themes/plotlines, but it's so very touching, and often surprisingly very funny. I don't think any other series has made me cry as much as this one. AND, it has one of the best ending episodes to any series ever (It'll make you sob like a baby!)

Easily fits in up there with the all-time great shows like Sopranos, the Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Fargo (except s3)

PS5 announcement. I like those next gen horror games.

  • Just watched the first two episodes of Staged. Don’t normally like the new Zoom based telly things, but this worked really well:

Can't believe it has been almost seven years since the PS4 came out.

  • New Documentary series on EPIX about a ton of great bands and musicians All living in this area of California known as Laurel Canyon, during the 60’s.

Subsequently the doc series is called Laurel Canyon. Some of the bands involved CSNY, Buffalo Springfield, the Doors, Joni Mitchell, etc... it’s pretty good so far.

  • Uncut Gems (forget what you think you know about Adam Sandler) and Joker (Joaquin Phoenix is amazing) both excellent.
3rd season of West World Is crazy!

Thank you. Good nudge. Been a long time. Summer late-evening binge material right there.

I really love his movie The Century of the Self

    Airplane!

I’ve not seen it for 20 years and it’s making me laugh more than expected.

Other than that, a lot of old black and white comedies with snappy dialogue (Preston Sturges ftw), ‘The End of the F**king World’ Season 2 (almost passed me by, I’m glad it didn’t) and a friend has convinced me to give Schitt’s Creek a go, although I’m not completely sold on that one just yet (I do like Chris Elliott, though, and Catherine O’Hara).

It’s a good time for comedy, I’ll argue.

Preston Sturges was a genius. I think I’ve seen all his movies at least once.

Hell of a life Sturges, and born to the father Edmund C. Biden which should at least cause some scrummaging around etc.

The Lady Eve is possibly the funniest movie I have ever seen. Again and again.

  • Anybody got any comedy recs? Like absurd, screwball, Naked Gun/Leslie Nielsen type stuff? Haven’t seen a good one in years.

  • Damn straight. I've read 2 biographies and perhaps not surprisingly, 'Preston Sturges by Preston Sturges' was the better one. His childhood explains a lot, being bounced around European High Society to the whims of Isadora Duncan. His first day of school he wore a toga, because that was the world he lived in. Inspirational figure. Invented kiss-proof lipstick.

I love it too @JeffChasteen (Are Snakes Necessary?) - Barbara Stanwyck's finest hour and a half I reckon.

@oat_phipps - if you can track it down and you're ok with subtitles, you can try 'La Cité de la Peur'

Ah Purim! I used to live in that area of Stoke Newington, owned a flat on a street just to the left of where he's driving about 20 years ago. God I loved that area. My wife on the other hand hated it

  • Still trying to finish off my Netflix watchlist, after which I'll cancel my Netflix sub.

F is for Family - A dark comedy recommended to me by the same friend who recommended Bojack Horseman. It's ok - pretty funny and topical at times, but not as good as Bojack. Best thing is the opening theme.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - More of a nostalgia trip for me I guess, even though theres's no He-Man or Skeletor.

Voltron - Another nostalgic reboot, but I like this one more than the versions I watched in my childhood, which, like Robotech, was cobbled together from 2-3 different anime and creatively mis-translated to make one show. This reboot was written/storyboarded/etc. from the ground up by one team, which makes for a stronger show imo.

Youtube recommended that channel to me, totally hilarious and sometimes NSFW lyrics...

  • Dark, season 3 is now available and gosh...it's so good...
