Alec Baldwin was making a new western and something really bad happened. Something similar to the John Carpenter "Twilight Zone" movie episode. Tragic.

    Holy shit.

Succession Season 3. One of my favourite shows ever, so glad it is back and that it comes out weekly so I can savour it rather than binge watch.

Amazing show. I'm about 2 episodes into the second season. Stumbled across it accidentally. Such great writing and acting.

The BFI Player has a great season at the moment called The Path to Dune. There are a couple of his early 'arthouse' films included which I haven't seen yet seen.

Can't get out to see Dune until after the weekend. I was overjoyed when I read the Peter Bradshaw review in the Guardian earlier this week. I was confident he'd deliver the goods again, but with a prize like Dune, there was always that nagging thought in the back of my mind that this might be where drops the balls!

Good call! Time to blow the dust off my BFI sub. I trust Bradshaw's reviews too. The best film reviewer around right now, imo. Miles in front of the guy from BBC with the quiff.

  • Currently rewatching The Wire. Greatest show of all time

You know I used to love his reviews, but honestly I find his reviews of commercial movies pretty useless. I remember that he gave really positive recommendations to Endgame and one of the Disney Star Wars films. Which certainly didn't jibe with my experiences. On the other hand when it comes to obscure Eastern European movies - top reviewer.

I'll watch Dune, but the trailer left me cold.

I think you mean John Landis. So far it sounds like this was just a really unfortunate accident, unlike the Twilight Zone thing which was due to extreme negliegence/abuse by the filmmakers.

I never really bother with them so that one passed me by. Was it The Last Jedi? It seems he was one of the 2 people who quite liked it.

  • Midnight Mass on Netflix.
    Limited series.
Starts a little slow but be patient, it delivers.

I didn't expect much. Foundation seems like it would be impossible to port to the screen. But still. 🥱

I finally took up Apple on their 1-year free offer after hearing this was going to come out. What is up with Apple TV+? There's ... like ... nothing interesting. I simply can't imagine anyone paying a monthly subscription for it.

1971 The Year That Music Changed Everything on Apple TV+ is definitely worth a watch

There’s actually quite a few interesting programs that I’ve found. That 1971 series was awesome.
I got the one year free offer with my new phone as well.
I doubt that I’ll re-up but I’ve enjoyed it while I’ve had it.

I don't watch a lot of TV Show, but I will try "Succession" season 1.

And I'm plot commited to Dexter so, next November, I will watch the season 9.

2 of my good friends think that The Wire is the greatest show of all time. For this reason, I tried to watch 2 episodes and I was not hook at all. Should I try to watch more episode before getting hook?

For me, Breaking Bad is the GOAT :)

Foundation is getting less lame as it goes on. Getting close to not being a total waste of time at this point.

  • I read their goal was to have 8 seasons with 10 episodes each, so I guess they are just building it up slowly.

Watched Dune last night and loved it. Finally saw the book on film, as far as I’m concerned. And the really interesting touches (…spoilers?) such as the House Atreides bullfighter lineage and the bagpipes being played at a ceremony were really surprising connections which humanized the scenes and helped remind one the story was about human beings in the distant future with real history. That’s something that I never fully got out of the book. And turning the ornithopters into craft inspired by dragonflies was ingenious. Everything felt absolutely real and believable.

Yeah the new Dune is SOOO fucking good. I had a lot of expectations for it being a fan of the SciFi series and the books, and it was MUCH better than I was even hoping for. I can't believe they haven't even made Part 2 yet, how did they not realize they had something incredible on their hands already?

Also, cool music and sound design. I'm guessing Villeneuve brought in the same team from Arrival by the sound of it, but I haven't checked yet.

Holy hell did I love Dune, watched it last night. Now I gotta watch The Many Saints of Newark before it leaves HBO Max on Halloween.

It is a great show isn’t it. Not many shows take you inside that world, and they do a hell of a job doing it.

Yes definitely give it a season, it only gets better. each season has a theme too. In one season they spend a lot of time at the shipyards, in one they spend a lot of time at the newspaper. If you asked someone their all time favorite show, I think most people would say one or all 3 of the following… The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad.

The Trip - the first song at the 6:30 is really cool with Euro vibe.

Home invasion is always gripping and this one has some serious humor too.

Watched Dune (Part One) tonight on HBO Max... truly epic film, IMHO. Something I'll probably return to
several times before they finish and release Part Two.

I do love that Novel and I'm glad Denis has such respect for the material. I was questioning the casting
but after watching it, I'm comfortable with the decisions made. I now have multiple renderings of Dune
in my head (Book, Lynch film, mini-series, Dune "Part One"). I think I'll listen to the audio book since the
internet has effectively killed my ability to hold up a large bundle of paper for hours while lying on my back... I can't face the physical nature of reading paper or the ability to channel my focus without a little
burst of surprise. Books that offer little burst of surprise still work for me... like Vonnegut.

After watching Dune, I watched episode 5 of the excellent "Foundation" which inspired Frank Herbert to
craft the universe of Dune. Isaac Asimov probably had an inspiration to create the Foundation stories that eventually became a trilogy. He was paid by the short story and later sold millions of books.

The sequence of "Foundation" to "Dune" to "Star Wars" and maybe I'll throw in "Firefly/Serenity" and end with "The Expanse". It created the genre of space epics that mixed story lines from the great Westerns and the Hero's Journey of the classics.

Alec Baldwin was making a new western and something really bad happened. Something similar to the John Carpenter "Twilight Zone" movie episode. Tragic.

+1 on the new Dune. One of the best scifi movies ever made

They might just be getting the setup out of the way for Dune: The Sisterhood. Use the big expensive spectacle as a primer to create the interest/backdrop for telling stories with character development at a better pace in the show. To me the movie could have easily been half a season of a series but I suppose the first few major story beats are nowadays somewhat obvious, even to people who are not huge Dune fans, so why draw it out? With the show they may be able to take more liberties and go down interesting character rabbit holes and world building ala GOT that are too expensive for the big screen.

  • Thanks for all the recommendations for Succession. I hadn’t even heard of that one before but it’s excellent! Good mix of drama and dark comedy, was surprised to learn Will Farrell was one of the executive producers so that makes sense.
