According to the BBC (best TV show of all time):

    1 The Wire (2002-2008)

Agree with this one, though I'd bump BB above Mad Men.

That list is missing the sopranos, or it just considered it so good that it was before the list…I’m going with that.

The wire was fantastic though. As we mentioned before, it is slow (at least season 1 is), but so worth it.

I finally watched The Wire last year, really dug it and thought I should then give Sopranos a try but I couldn’t get through the first episode. My brain was just too in much in The Wire flow and Sopranos seemed so hokey and cartoony. I imagine that first episode can’t really be how the whole series is.

Funny that it's missing from the list.... would cerainly be in my Top Three, maybe #1 altogether, but I do still love The Bureau ridiculously much which only made #49 on The List so, you know, fuck that.

That yes true for sure about the Sooranos, the first episode was a pilot shot a year before any other episode, it definitely developed. Especially James Gandolfini, who really hadn’t found his character yet. Season 2 is my favorite of all of them though. I was in love with it because I live in the area where it takes place and a large portion was filmed, so that’s part of my love for it.

The wire was so slow at first and took some getting used to, but then that’s also what I came to appreciate about it.

Yeah, this list was very strange, tons of classic shows missing too- all shows were very recent.

One other thing to keep in mind about sopranos is that it really created the 1 hour, short season, Sunday night drama on a cable network format, so it enabled so many other shows to happen.

I don’t know the bureau, I’ll have to check that one out.

I believe the list was meant to be for the best shows that began from 2000, which explains the lack of classic shows on the list.

Ah, that makes more sense. And sopranos stared before 2000 (1999 I believe) so maybe that’s why it’s not on there.

    A ground breaker for sure.
Many moons prior a co-worker gave me a tape(yep VCR) of the series.
I remember telling friends that you have to watch with a sense of humor or it will fall short.
It left me with a load of one shots archived in AudioShare.
    Priceless stuff.

What a good idea....I know that the non-sequitur nature of obscure samples is what can give them their value in songs when re-purposed, but there must be all kinds of throwaway lines in Tony's world worth harvesting....sounds like a weekend project :)

  • Last season of Ozark. As good, if not better, than the previous seasons. Love this show as it reminds to be happy I made the right choices in life. 😆

Good to hear. I watched S1, but then stopped for no real reason, so will go back and revisit.

In other news, watched the first episode of The Responder with Martin Freeman in a refreshingly crew-cut and grow-up role; really quite good, but heavy going also..

  • Series

Currently finishing The new Dexter, Dexter New Blood Season 1, Yellowjackets Season 1, both are great. Only 1 episode left of each to watch.

The Righteous Gemstones is so great, second season recently started, it’s another amazing show by Danny McBride. I highly recommend watching every show he has done. Especially, Eastbound and Down, Vice Principals, and now the Righteous Gemstones.

Latest season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The new DC/HBO Max series Peacemaker is decent so far only a few episodes in…

    Movies

Just watched Marvel Movies- The Black Widow, and Shang Chi. Both really good. Liked Shang Chi more.

Just borrowed The French Dispatch from the library, and cant wait to watch it, I’m a huge Wes Anderson fan.

    Sports

Love me some EPL but they are on international break, so WorldCup Qualifiers, Go USMNT.

    NFL playoffs.

The Summer of Soul on Hulu. (….Or When the Revolution Could Not be Televised) Wow.
I’m only an hour in and there’s so much history.
Wait for the scene with Mahalia Jackson and Mavis Staples. Gave me goose bumps.

It was probably a list made by 20-30 year olds.

It was really good at increasing my anxiety so I didn't last too long.

Ozark is some excellent television. Family dynamic gone mad.
Seems people are hot or cold on it.
I say don’t miss it. It will make you uncomfortable.

  • Season 5 of Rick and Morty makes it to HBO and Hulu tomorrow…

  • Finally watched 'Ted lasso'. Enjoyed every minute and didn't want to end. The only thing I've watched in a long time, save for perhaps 'The Punisher that made me feel like re-watching straight away. We shall see.

  • The Righteous Gemstones.
    Fantastic show.
John Goodman, Danny McBride, and my man Walton Goggins!

As someone said, you have to keep in mind that The Sopranos is a comedy punctuated with moments of brutal violence.
    It’s my #1.

Oh man, how did I not know about this show until you wrote this?!!! Amazingly funny. As usual John Goodman and Walton Goggins are great. I didn’t know Danny mcbride’s work before this, but it didn’t take long to become a fan.

  • I had never watched ‘Fleabag’, but knew it got great reviews. Part way into season 2, and very impressed with everything about it.

Not a show or movie, but I'm catching up on all The Darkness videos of the last 20 years. What a band. "Barbarian"? "Open Fire"? This is fantastic stuff.

  • I’ve been watching old Survivor seasons cos I ran out of seasons of The Amazing Race to watch and it’s not bad. Lots of drama.

  • We got Station Eleven a few months after it was shown in America, but after seeing the first episode on Starzplay I had to purchase the remaining episodes for immediate consumption. Quite honestly, it was the best TV sci-fi I’ve seen in years. It was so thoughtful and turned a post-pandemic dystopian tale on its head in terms of the typical tropes.

It came as no surprise when I read that it had won the Arthur C Clarke award a few years previously when the book was published.

Thanks for the heads up on this one, I would have totally missed it otherwise. Quirky and weird, it's really different and each episode keeps you on your toes. I liked it a lot.

  • I’ve just watched Reacher on Amazon.

Is it good? Er, no. Not really. It’s pretty terrible to be honest.

I enjoyed it immensely. Switch off brain, watch big bloke punch people. The end.

  • Liking Reservation Dogs on FX. Not many tv show/comedies about native Americans. Well written and acted.
