Thank u as always. Yep, I think I just prefer the vocal to sit back a bit, but u and others here are absolutely right. Just need to pay more attention to it! Cheers 😊
I get it mate and people will always have their preferences regarding where things sit in the Mix. Vocals are an easy thing to get wrong I think, because YOU know what your singing and how it sounds...cos u wrote it. People who are listening for the first time however, won’t have a clue until they HEAR it...& I know that’s like the most obvious statement In the world, but I always seem to forget the most obvious things in the world sooo...
I'm intreagued now ! I really want to hear this with lyrics.
A million miles away from what I do but no denying ,... excellent vocal performance .. whish I could sing :-s
I think your entry from last month was a hard act to follow .. got my vote for track of the month for may. This is obviously a very different sound (as each of your entries usually are) unfortunately, it's not doing it for me. It never really gets going and lacks the strong hook your tracks usually have. Sorry
I prefer the deep dubby backing of the first mix but the vocal seems more natural in the second and third. Decisions decisions ?
Thanks..... A conundrum indeed...…. I thought about putting the 6 mixes here, but I didn't want to "Pee off" Richard.
Thanks mate.
No problem, appreciate the honesty, kind of agree with u really! 😉
@icsleepers it's a cool and fast moving track, I like the sudden changes - the drop just before the one minute mark feels like we've slipped into a different tune, then you do it again 40 seconds later - it makes for a fun and thrilling ride.
Overall I like the manic energy, and I think it's a pretty good example of the genre.
@studs1966 this time around I think I preferred the bossa mix, just more fun and rhythmically interesting. The vocal is a little repetitive in parts, but otherwise it's a smooth track that certainly knows how to boogie.
Thanks Richard. Always respect your views mate.
Holy crap it’s June already??? Sorry that I’ve fallen a little behind guys, it’s been a busy past couple of weeks. I’ll try to catch up on some feedback here this weekend. Gotta admit, SOTMC threads are one of my favorite things about this forum.
It’s funny, since you mentioned vocals I kept trying to imagine a vocal track which I probably wouldn’t have done otherwise, but regardless of whether the original vocal attempt “sucked” or not I think this stands on its own as an instrumental. Definitely include it on your next release, it’s very nice work. I loved how the drone-ish sounds blended. I kind of heard The Doors in there a bit. Cool stuff!
Oh man, this was outstanding! Probably the best single track I’ve heard posted on this forum. Beautiful lyrics complement the beautiful vocals. Dude you have a gift for crafting melodic hooks and knowing where to place them. Kind of makes me sick that you can sing them so well too, it’s almost not fair to the rest of us! I’ve already listened to it 4 times and will listen some more. Thank you very much for sharing this track, it’s like an unexpected gift.
I’ve only got two suggestions for this otherwise perfect song. Regarding the chordbot stuff, it’s actually not bad. One thing you might try, though, it to throw some “humanizer” on it. For example in Auria (not sure if you use it) there are some randomize controls where you can set various things such as velocity or position, kind of the opposite of quantize, and a small amount like 5% can go a long way towards making fairly flat MIDI sound more natural. Like I said, it’s not bad as it is, just something to maybe try if you end up not getting that person to play it (or don’t like the way they play it).
The only other suggestion is the ending. I wanted so bad for this to have a proper ending and not a fade out. I know, endings are hard. But think about it this way: you’ve already written a bunch of phrase endings throughout the song so you know how to do it already! You could have the vocals end a phrase at a point where the intro piano could pick back up and use that repeating piano phrase as the fade out. Best of both worlds.
Anyway, just two minor suggestions, but please don’t let those diminish how utterly floored I was by this song! I’m still in shock.
Hey there .e. been listening to some NiN lately? Half kidding, I do hear Mr. Reznor in there somewhere. Nice one, it definitely goes in the “win” column. And I think the vocal level fits fine in the mix, draws the listener deeper into the track. Bring it up too much more and you might lose that pull. Just my opinion, though, feel free to experiment more if you want.
@obijohn Dude!!! Thanks so much for that incredible feedback, incredible because it was very generous (and humbling) so thanks for that and secondly...what a bloody fantastic tip that was about the randomising function in Auria!!!! I knew the piano needed humanising and in the breakdown on the high bit, I went in and volume tweaked a few notes to make it sound more natural, but that didn’t really work.
As it happens, I’ve now paid a session pianist to make this baby shine as bright as it can. (First time I’ve ever paid someone to work on a song) I can’t wait to hear their results, but that little tip you gave me is priceless for me moving forward.
So thank YOU very much indeed man and I’m thrilled you love the track so much.
I’ll return the favour buddy, when I’m done chasing my kids around!!
Cool DnB effort there, nice bits of complexity in the arrangement which is a touch that gets overlooked too often in these types of tracks. I agree about the kicks, I think what’s missing is some sidechain compression, which is usually how you give kicks that big punch. It’s not a huge deal here, it’s a very nice track as-is.
I really like 2 the best. I mean, 1 is cool too, but I think the vocals fit much better with 2 and 3. That first one might actually be better as an instrumental maybe?
Just curious, when doing these different style mixes are you looking for what style fits best with the individual song or are you trying to find which style fits best with you? Hmm, maybe that came across as more philosophical than intended lol. I love experimenting and doing so can stretch some creative muscles that benefit all around, so I applaud that and encourage it, don’t get me wrong. To me it feels like the disco style is more comfortable for you, as in it sounds like a more natural fit for what you’re doing. Anyway, I was just curious about what your intentions were with the different mixes.
My entry for the month. Using a private SC link for feedback, since I don't want to get into the same mess I had when needing to replace the rough mixes with the final versions for my album. What a mess that was.
Hmm, well apparently the forum's embeded SC player doesn't like private links, so I have to do it as a non-embeded link. Hope that's ok:

Thanks for listening matey. You know, when I do different mixes, I don't have an clue/idea until I start tinkering with some chords, or a bassline(while listening/jamming to the vocal stem) Sometimes, I make more variations of Mixes. Depends on the mood really. For example, the record label I do work for, they send me just the vocals(sometimes good, sometimes...... "What The a hell am I going to with this" vocal mix). When its a good vocal acapella, I can get good vibes from it(I got one vocal, & managed to give them 10 different mixes..... Almost an album with just on great vocal stem)..... I normally try & create at least 4 mixes/styles (minimum) in an Disco/House/Soulful theme when I get a vocal. Experimentation is the way forward, & trying to be different.... I hope that helps?.......
Thank u. Yes, admit a big fan of TR. You are absolutely right with the vocal level, any louder and I just found it flattened the backing out and totally lost the feel. Wondered if a bit of ducking via side chain might help, but does sound bit too much like hard work for me these days. Quiet vocals it is! 😉😁
Dude! I love the whole 80’s vibe I’m getting on this track. It’s awesome! That lead hook is...well...very hooky! Great breakdowns and an interesting and unusual beat choice, I know I must have heard that fast type of snarey (technical term) groove somewhere, but I honestly can’t think of where. So kudos for what, to MY ears, sounds very original.
I’m not so good at critiques for instrumentals, they either work for me, or they don’t. I enjoyed yours a lot. Great track!
Cheers

Thanks so much, glad it connected! To be honest, I’m having a really hard time pinpointing the genre of what I’m writing. I mean, I listen to a lot of different music, but when I write something I’m not trying to fit it into a specific category or even emulate a style or artist. I just try to create something that I like, which it turns out doesn’t really fit in any particular genre or subgenre (and there are a LOT of electronic subgenres).
Anyway, thanks again for the compliments, it means a lot!
My entry this time. Still no arrangement and no edits. But trying to give it away in a timely manner.
Last one is the best for me. Fantastic!
I like it, there is a lot of space in this song. Nice and short, too. Are these all live instruments?
Busy busy month at work, but I still found time to finish a track that had been sitting around half-finished. This one is all-PC, because I'm stuck on about 5 tracks on my iPhone that I can't seem to finish (yet?). I had fun with this one digging into the speeches of a great President and coming up with some that I'd NEVER heard before, including the first bit in the intro that I'm shocked that I've never heard before. It's also probably the most "optimistic" track I've ever made - even though it's optimism in the face of extreme adversity.
I didn't know if it'd turn out, but I was only half-listening once and it gave me the chills, listening to one of the speech bits. So, my music is clearly not the star of the track, and all thanks go to FDR.

Now to make time to listen to everyone else's, as I haven't had a chance yet.
I like it. The bass sound is very cool and the chord change at around 4:13 (I think) was unexpected, really appreciated that. As far as editing and arranging go, I would suggest bringing that up sooner, then go back to it again later. It was the highlight for me.
“This great nation will endure...” Fantastic quote! Yeah this track was a lot of fun to listen to. I like that you didn’t overpower the voice, and didn’t allow the voice to overpower the music. Nice balance. Personally, I wouldn’t have faded the voice out at the end, since the music has already faded. But it’s cool the way it is too. Nice track!
