@McD : what OS version are you on out of curiosity.
C'mon. Don't make me want to get it after you made that post about Nanostudio 2. I already got Synthjacker and I'm trying to resist the temptation.
Sorry. I get very upset with AudioLayer but it's usually because I go there CrudeByte route and use very long samples times with too many layers using SynthJacker. I got some of my best instruments from Mac OS X MainStage using the ESX24 import format. So, now with SFZ and ESX24 it's useful without too much excess work. But cutting back on the number of samples and their overall disk storage requirements can make AudioLayer an essential tool.
I just kept hoping for amazing quality like iSymphonic and other Apps can serve up.
@ScottVanZandt showed that making instruments for NS2 was a better tradeoff and using SynthJacker for that playback target is great but I need to keep working to understand how to use NS2 and I haven't been ready to drop opening AUM every time I get the mood to play or create.
NS2 requires building a personal library by auto-sampling all the stuff you paid 100's of $'s for hoping to make film music in a DAW without freezing one new track at a time. Something yo can play and still edit at the note (i.e. MIDI) level in post-production.
Essential tools for that approach to film scoring include:
SynthJacker
AudioLayer
NS2 (all other DAW's just can't scale without freezing... Cubasis, Auria Pro)
Sound Engine apps like Beathawk, Noise, PureSynth, iSymphonic, Colossal Pianos (there are dozens), SFZ playback engine like BS-16i or Audio Evolution Pro with AudioBus for plumbing I think or the SynthJacker BYOAF approach.
For notation based composers add Notion or the new kid that just rolled out.
Where there's the right will there is a way.
Desktop/Laptops and a lot of money for software are so much better. I was advised early to just invest there. I'd rather fond a cheaper way and leave breadcrumbs for the less fortunate like a typical college Music Major that wants to hear what their homework sounds like.
Imagine writing a symphony that is never played for anyone including the composer. That's what my era was like. We live in an age of solo creators. No need to beg anyone for help really.
Is there midi cc on this update?
The updated version seems to have different behavior when changing the pitch. It actually changes the key its playing. That was not the case before. It would simply pitch the full instrument.
Just try it when using a drumkit or loops for example. Anyone else has this issue?
I haven't noticed a difference. Is this with new instruments you are making or existing instruments?
Maybe I not understanding. Can you post a video demonstrating the issue?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yeah, I'll use Nanostudio, and if I ever need more, I might consider Audiolayer.
That worked with the "Trumpet (SFZ)" download just using the Files app for the move and uncompress steps.
For some reason the "French Horn (SFZ)" doesn't appear in the Files app after downloading.
But I'm making progress on the process thanks to the help I got
IOS 13.3 on iPad 6th Gen
Now, I should text the recipe on my iPhone too.
It's always something... now the "Open in AudioLayer"choice is not displaying in the sharing menu on my iPhone. I'm going to reinstall the app and test again. It was there a while ago in this detective work. Deleting apps usually asks if I want to delete the data too so there might be 2 steps to fix this back to standard behavior after having too many use cases fail.
Not really but at least they've added a few control sources so now there are a few more control options and after stripping the overlap, I've listed an exclusive combination (i.e. each CC controlling something different) on the Breath Controller thread:
If the controllers don't fit your hardware, you'll have to re-map some.
On a sequencer automation track, that should make no difference though.
What do you mean by "changing the pitch"? There are 100 ways to do that.
Still no luck getting AudioLayer to reveal itself in my sharing menu. Look's like I'll have to audition instruments on iPad and export them over to the iPhone. Or maybe an update will reset the behavior with a code refresh. I have no idea what I did to loose it from my sharing list along with dozens of other apps that are offered. Maybe if I delete a dozen or two it will make the cut and be displayed. I installed a ton of apps since I got a lot of storage. Arg.
OK... moving on to hear some of these SFZ instruments: the Trumpet is not very good. That's usually the impact of most SFZ imports on me... meh. But maybe there are commercial SFZ's worth considering?
Please rate and ideally demo good SFZ instruments.
I'm going to go look for the 6GB "Piano in 162" again. I remember the SFZ options turn down the volume in Auria Pro and needed some editing.
In my opinion, Salamander sounds much better than Ivy (Piano in 162) despite Ivy having more samples as they weren’t recorded as well as Salamander’s.
I agree. I just want a quick way to test audio layer for large sample sets. I'm trying to get
"The Piano from 162" using BitTorrent.
I'm going to see how the Virtual Playing Orchestra SFZ loads and sounds:
http://virtualplaying.com/virtual-playing-orchestra/
Why not just download Salamander? It's easily available.
Why not just download Salamander? It's easily available.
Maybe because BitTorrent respectfully doesn't eat up the hoster's transfer volume?
Some pricing models are pay-by-volume.
There are some good and many bad instruments in this bulk download.
I'm glad @espiegel123 reminded me that AudioShare can unzip because the Apple
File's App uncompress option complains about not have permission thread the Zip.
AudioShare unzipped it without any issues.
After unzipping you have to import instruments one at a time from one hundred or so.
It's a bundle of several freeware orchestra sets.
My Bitorrent download of "The Piano in 162" is about 80% done.
Hi,
I get the Open in Audiolayer menu on Files so no problems on my side.
However, I’m facing problems while importing files converted by Chicken Sys Translator 7. Import procedure is fine, samples show up on the grid. But I can get any sound to play when I press the keyboard. It’s like nothing’s happening. Anyone faced this ?
Thanks !
@Treaszure - I was struggling with this (DD libraries import in to AL) for weeks and I found that the SFZ import worked for me after I reinstalled AL, turned off the iCloud folder option and deleted the old folder and imported the DD folder into the local "on my ipad" AL / imports folder. I haven't actually tested EXS import into the local folder after this so it might also work (according to what Virsyn told me in a recent e-mail).
How exactly does the new local storage option work? I turned it on expecting to see a local copy of my Instrument and samples but nope.
Thank you! I will try it out over the weekend
@d4d0ug There is a manual built into it now if that helps...
Local storage means that it stores and looks for instruments in the devices local storage rather than on your iCloud Drive. I don't think it will copy your cloud-based instruments. You will, I think you have to move/copy them yourself.
Hi,
I successfully imported some of my Reed Organs in AudioLayer on iOs 13. I already had the files uncompressed on the iPad in another folder and I copied them to the AudioLayer samples folder, from there I tapped on a sfz definition file and it launched AudioLayer to import it.
I had 2 problems though, first even if I saw the option to choose a destination folder, when I tried they were greyed out and could not actually choose a different one. And secondly the original loop points were ditched as AudioLayer put the samples in one shot mode. I did not notice it at first as the samples are rather long! Audio Evolution Mobile Studio can load sfz files and with the same files, the loop points are working correctly.
Anyway I will do further testing next week.
To answer your 4 questions:
1- I am selling sfz that do just that works next to a "samples" directory. But they are password protected .rar archives. So they have to be uncompressed on a computer first.
2- As stated above, I had copied them uncompressed first to the Audio Evolution Mobile folder in the File App and from there copied to the AudioLayer folder.
3- Use local storage.
4- iOS 13, iPad Air 3
If you want to see and hear the end result, watch this video I made yesterday (in Cubasis 2):
Well, it always had that option but you had to choose between iCloud option and local storage (and yes, you had to copy between the two). I was referring to this in the release notes for the update:
I read that to mean that if you turned on the local storage toggle that you'd see the files saved to the iOS device storage even when you continue to save files to iCloud drive. But it doesn't look like it does?
I could also not figure that one out for now...
