Rhism: @K_Evo1 Thanks for the vote of confidence on price. Actually I did try going up to $10 once, but it didn't go that well - very soon got two reviews complaining about price, and sales collapsed to nothing right after that. Had to do some damage control on those reviews by dropping price, now going up again more slowly to see where the sweet spot is for guitarism as it is today (no MIDI, no extra sounds).
Release the UNIVERSAL version at $9.99-$14.99 already and stop contemplating over releasing 2 versions at lower price points ;-). I want guitarism on my iPad already
. I'd gladly buy a $4.99 or higher IAP bundle to activate MIDI and whatever other goodies you have planned.
@Simon Perfect
Thanks for doing that btw! I owe you a pack of peanuts.
@Michael_R_Grant Congrats on being #300
BTW I first decided to add AB support to guitarism when I saw your post on the forums asking for "pretend guitars for Audiobus". That post told me that a community of mostly electronic musicians might be interested in a guitar.
Wrt promoting via youtube/soundcloud/fb/twitter - like Sebastian said, that'd be very appreciated! If you guys are up for it we should pick a specific day to do this, and the next morning I can tell you all how it impacted sales numbers. It'd be really cool to see how much of a difference it makes in a very quantifiable way!
BTW it's pretty awesome that Audiobus doesn't just connect audio apps together, but also their developers and users. The discussion we're having here so publicly is (I think) pretty uncommon in the world of mobile music apps, or even software in general.
@K_Evo1 Based on the discussion so far and my own thinking, I'm gonna go with either a single universal update (but also add some IAPs like MIDI) or a separate universal Pro version (which includes MIDI etc for free). Either way the iPad support won't make sense to release without some of those other features, so unfortunately it's going to have to be a little bit longer wait
I think I've done my part with making videos. Would be really great to see some other people from around here make some too, it's always interesting to see/hear someone after you have been reading their words. I will definitely be making more Guitarism videos in the future. :-)
Definitely.
One last request Adil.
Not sure if you have disabled the tilt mechanism completely from ipad version??
Could it be employed as pitch bend/vibrato/tremolo?although a strumming app, since ampkit ect,I've been plucking a lot more.good luck with the release.
@commonstookie Well I certainly hope it's not the "last" request
Yeah I definitely see myself and others using guitarism in different ways now that it's on AB and can be hooked up to JamUp /AmpKit. Techniques like palm muting, pitch bend, vibrato, tremolo etc used to be irrelevant to guitarism but have now become interesting and useful.
I do plan to disable iPad tilt for now - tilt uses battery and processing power, and is unusable for most people. There will be a buttons-based mechanism to access the secondary chords which is much easier to use.
Separately from that I'd like to add some of the new techniques that you mentioned, if they can be done elegantly. They wouldn't come in the next update, and I don't even know if I can do them until I start trying. Adding a new technique takes a lot of work to design the interface, get the sensitivity right, make sure it doesn't have too many false positives or false negatives etc. Alternately one thing I might do instead is to create a new 'lead guitar' interface which is designed primarily for playing notes rather than strumming, and then all those features could be better-used there. This would be even more work of course but would also hopefully be much more useful.
BTW @commonstookie if you have an audio or video recording of the kind of thing you're playing where you'd want to use vibrato/tremolo, that'd be very useful to hear/see!
@Rhism I think he's saying he'd like the tilt to be triggered via midi in signals. @commonstookie is that correct?
I think it's the other way round. He'd like tilting the iPad to activate pitch bend, or vibrato, or tremolo, instead of the alternative chords.
@PaulB Yeah that's what I read too. IMO these features could be done in a variety of ways, tilt is one option. But I'd first want to understand what kind of music he (or anyone who wants these features in a strumming-based app) wants to play with this, as it'd significantly impact the design of the feature.
I could see it working quite well as a virtual whammy bar. It depends on how you end up holding the iPad while playing, of course.
@PaulB Whammy bar is a great idea! And a great fit for a strumming-centric experience.
The way thumbjam is doing it.??
.......full midi for Guitarism, including pitch bend, velocity ect.Appreciate that tj is midi and using cc info and that with guitarism you may need to trigger a sample for each instruction(that right?)
Could Geo/Cantour(or tj) be used as controllers for Guitarism.?
Can see that this would be taking Guitarism somewhere you may not have intended it going initially and therefore a second app may be the way to go,...'lead guitarism'?
@commonstookie TJ is not a good comparison because you play very different kinds of things with TJ (typically monophonic lead melodies) vs guitarism (typically polyphonic chords / arpeggios). So techniques like pitch bend and vibrato have very different meanings in these two apps. This is why a recording of you playing something in guitarism, and indicating where in the recording you'd want to be able to do bend/vibrato, would be super-useful.
Wrt Geo/Cantor controlling guitarism: I've been assuming that guitarism needs MIDI out more than MIDI in, since guitarism has just one sound. Folks who want to use Geo/Cantor/TJ to control guitarism could instead just control TJ or SampleTank or something, no?
Thanks Adil, will send you a video clip.
The way I see it working is if I hold a 'string' and tilt, could that give me pitch bend?
If I hold a string and shake, could I get vibrato.lifting off the note would stop the effect.
I'm finding since AB,the line between guitarism and tj is no longer as defined.I now have a range of effects and the ability to change the original sampled,(no longer 'one' sound) of guitarism....fuzz/wah/distortion/delay/combos...
If the new version can give me all 18 chords, having midi in and out would be more useful.
In TJ the tilt pitch bend actually only affects the most recently touched note, and not any others. Perhaps it could be similar in Guitarism, commonstookie's suggestion sounds logical, when a finger is still down after touching or moving through a string, tilt or shake could apply bend or vibrato to that string only.
@sonosaurus Yep agreed that this could be a workable solution - "last note only" and "finger still down" are good constraints to make that work, though ideally "finger still down" is not required (but then need to solve for the fast strum cases where bend would sound weird). The recording will help me internalize it more. Part of me wonders if I should just do 'lead guitarism' instead.
Second thoughts Adil (and Jesse).I don't think the tilt function would be suitable for the ipad version of Guitarism. What works on the iPhone/pod and maybe mini, doesn't always translate we'll on the ipad.Guitarism requires both hands on the ui to work(one changing chords and the other strumming/plucking).
Tj can be played with one hand, leaving the other to perform tilt/shake
Tj has the added benefit of feeling comfy played in portrait or landscape mode. The same can be done with guitarism of course, but the ui is set for landscape mode.
one way I can see pitch bend/sustain working on ipad guitarism is If the finger(the one playing the string),is
1)held on the string,for sustain.
2)could slide along the string, for pitchbend.
(With a positive-towards the fretboard and negative-away from the fretboard)
Tremolo/vibrato could be incorporated with
Seperate sliders, possibly below the bottom string.
Edit
Do 'lead guitarism'.
@commonstookie Agreed that tilt isn't suited for guitarism on iPad. But if you tell me what you want to achieve musically, I can try to figure out the best mechanism for achieving it. Recordings are always critical for me to correctly understand your musical intention.
BTW 'lead guitarism' is easier said than done
Playing lead melodies easily, naturally and accurately is perhaps the hardest problem in the world of iOS music app interface design. TJ is one of the best right now, as it works under certain smart constraints, but it doesn't allow you to intentionally play specific melodies easily. iFretless and GeoSynth are my other two favorites, but they too have certain constraints and limitations. My approach to this would be somewhat different, and may end up being awesome or a total disaster
@Rhism I say wait and see how iFretless Guitar is.. From what he has been telling me it may set the new standard. :-)
@Ryan Of course - definitely looking forward to that one
.
@Simon Figure got a good a rankings bump on Tuesday (and sales are still up since then). MacBreak Weekly was also posted on Tuesday, so that's a match.
Speaking of sales, is Samplr on offer or something? (I can't check because I already have it, so the price doesn't show up in the App Store.) It's been hovering between 10 and 20 in the UK music app charts for a few days now and I was wondering if there was a particular reason for it.
I also thought that the price was unavailable if you own the app, but if you search for it and then look in the dev section, the price will appear.

Nice! Thks @Rhism.
