  • Is there a release date yet? :)

Is it possible to read or DL the manual without beta testing? I agree that wait is terrible :D ... any estimated time for AppStore version release? Still possible to join beta test team?

Final small updates to manual today, some final testing tomorrow - so looking to submit to Apple this weekend!!

Note - first release is iPad only - I need to make some layout changes for iPhones so it will be straight after in the next update - the app will be universal, just restricted to iPad at launch.

  • great news, this app is going to solve a lot of workflow problems :)

Ok thanks for answer. I can help for beta testing on 7 Plus if needed

    Thanks @RajahP for manual link.

  • @midiSequencer Good luck with the launch, time to queue up for this one I think.

Final update on the manual - http://amssoftware.org/manual/PhotonManual.pdf
Will probably tweak it some more after launch, but this should be good for starters (its available offline in the standalone version of the app).

Just some final testing now for me & beta testers then I can launch (before Drambo ;))

  • So how much money I should have on my card to buy this gem?

Just over $7 - but about $6 for launch

  • The anticipation is palpable!

Ok.. that’s not that much.. thanks..

  • Are we there yet? :)

Would love to see this as an Au plugin...... Yes, there are scalers out there but no ‘custom scales’ (as far as I know)..

Fit any sequence to any scale, +...

Edit.. maybe out of scale notes can be transposed to selected scale/notes (closest, etc.).

almost... I needed to add the ability to pick a track from a multi-track midi file as sometimes track one is empty.
You can do that now with loading into the buffer or groove buffer.
Saving as multitrack isn't possible yet, but at least I can now load 4 tracks into 4 pads (will be in my video demo)

Sure I was thinking this would make a nice AU :) Let me publish Photon & Polythemus this week though!

Polythemus? Must have missed that one..

Its an au poly to mono splitter - each mono has its own AUM channel and the chord notes are allocated to successive voices - so think multi-timbral synth voice allocation - the effect of which is to make mono synths sound like poly synths.
Best scenario is iVCS3 being turned into a polyphonic synthi, but of course you can connect any synth to a voice - a mixture of synths, same synth but varied patches etc.
I created it to turn Moog Model D into a Moog One, but iVCS3 is better - James Cosby is enjoying making some polyphonic patches, and Alessandro is extending ApeMatrix to support AU multiple outputs.
Here is the manual http://www.amssoftware.org/manual/PolythemusManual.pdf and this app is ready to launch.

Close but its 300 years ago rather than future! Polythemus is the cyclops from Handel's Acis & Galatea.

About 1'20 in you hear what I consider to be the best contrapuntal song ever created :)

How is it going to split chords? Are you planning various splitting methods? (e.g time, velocity, random)

There are 4 methods (currently) to allocate the next midi note played to one of (and up to) the 8 voices:
Round Robin - allocate to the next voice, stealing it if its playing
Next Free - allocate to the next free voice not currently playing, steal oldest if none
Keep Low - allocate to the next free voice not currently playing, steal highest if none - good for drones
Keep High - allocate to the next free voice not currently playing, steal lowest if none

So this plays like a synth voice stealing (time really) rather than velocity mapped voicing.

It routes all non-midi data (CCs pitchbend etc) to all voices.
You can override midi channel per voice so its fixed (eg play keyboard midi ch 1, but voice 2 plays as ch 2).
Also has per voice mixing (linear velocity gain) and per voice enable (basically a mute)
It will work on your mono/poly hardware synths too (if you have more than one).
All parameters are AU Parameters so you can automate them.

You need a host that supports multiple channels (e.g. AUM and soon AB3 & ApeMatrix - not sure if there are any others?)

  • Nice, thx for explanation! Will definitely grab this one too!

OK, Is there an option to set the number of notes for each voice? ie, using two instances of Model 15 (4 note poly) for 8 note poly.

A great feature set is already done using this script with Streambyter:
    http://audeonic.boards.net/thread/579/distribute-polyphonic-midi-channels-voices

Also I hopepolytjhemus is priced well to justify not getting the Streambyter! I really just need the poly functinallity!

Its one note per voice - so next free allocates 1st note to ch1, 2nd note to ch2 etc.
However ch1,2,3 etc are AUM channels so you could implement this by have two M15s in AUM channels then make first M15 input from Polythemus output ch 1..4, 2nd M15 input from ch5..8

Although Streambyter is versatile (if you're happy to script) it has no UI or AU automation/state saving
    Its going to be £2.99

Here is the manual http://www.amssoftware.org/manual/PolythemusManual.pdf and this app is ready to launch.

I don't think I have a use for Polythemus as intended (a way to make mono synths poly), but I'm looking forward to using it in other ways!

I'm imagining routing most notes to the same synth and then a few to nothing to create variations in melodic lines or mutes that don't follow a strict tempo (as with something like Perforator) but rather by note count....

In that vein, and realizing that this is deviating from the app's intent, is there any chance for incorporating probability? i.e. each output has a probability so it's adjustable how likely it will send the note out? Basically I'm hoping for something like an AU version of midiFILTr-PG as I'd like to be able to modulate the settings and evolve the stream of notes.

Thinking about it, I realize that with AU automation, some of this could be possible already, but built in controls would be easier and more flexible....

  • @aplourde poly to mono was indeed its original function if only to give you a varied timbre by using different but similar patches in the same synth.
I can look into extending it to include per voice probability controls - this is basically a % chance of 0 volume (basically a gate) - although not sure if that necessarily fits in with voice allocation rather than a simpler input note->fx(%chance to reduce volume to 0)->output

Well its that time again when all this talk of an app turns into a real app!!!
Thanks for all the feedback folks!

I've just submitted Photon to Apple - so just the videos left for me to do.

iPhone version will follow (it works just needs a UI redesign).
