More info about USB-C and 4GB/ 6GB Memory new iPad Pros
I know there are more threads about the Apple event but I think the USB-C connection is an important point to discuss and cover for us iPAd users.
From the Verge site:
"And USB-C takes the place of Lightning. Note that this isn’t Thunderbolt 3, it’s USB 3.1 gen 2, supporting up to 10-gigabit transfer speeds. I watched the iPad Pro drive a 5K display out of DJay Pro, and it can now support an extended display, while previous iPads just mirrored. That’s up to individual apps to support, though. I also saw it connect to a camera, which automatically popped open the camera roll import screen, but we’ve confirmed that it will not support external storage over USB-C. (When I complained that I just want to import RAW directly to Lightroom CC and skip the camera roll, Apple pointed to a Siri Shortcut that automatically deletes photos from the camera roll after import to Lightroom. So.)"

Update about RAM
The iPad Pro 1TB has 6GB RAM other models 4GB.
Comments
It would be 'ironic' if we have to use additional 3rd party apps to access standard usb-c flash memories/drives...
For me personally the Sandisk iXpand Drive is a 'tool' I use very often and loosing that flexibility with the new iPads is a big no-no.
Apple could if they really got their act together add proper mass-storage support straight into the files.app.
iOS13 may shed some light on it but hey, for Apple they want 100% control over their users including the stuff they create, that's why they lock all other options out and force users to use iCloud...
Someone needs to head over to Apple HQ and kick some butt and shake their brains so they wake up...
(Maybe I'm finally starting to 'wake up' from the reality-distortion field or something).
Unclear if this means that we now can connect directly to external hardware as synths, microphones and other midi devices. But still we can't connect to mass storage devices. The last thing is a bummer
Yeah, the big question is if the Audio/ MIDI standard is now enabled directly by USB-C. Previously, the USB camera adapter housed the chip that enabled USB audio and MIDI through the lightning port.
But now... ? who knows, I really hope the iOS system software allows iPad to host any USB-C hub or USB device directly for audio and MIDI.
That’s ridiculous. I was interested in the new 11”, but that puts a real dampener on it.
Think my next iPad will be the previous iPad Pro.
No one really knows for do they?
Verge gets it wrong about external display support, current iPads do as well just not over 1080p.
for visual work, I gotta say that the "extended display" has a whole lot of potential. This isn't just mirroring or sending 4k video. This is an iPad with dual-display capability: one internal retina and one external 4k. It is up to the developers to make something great out of this, but there are so many possibilities.
Luma Fusion hinted at this earlier this year. I’d expect an update from them soon supporting it
Unclear to me I you now can use standard USB-C cables.
So are they saying that you cannot access a 10gig thumb drive with samples for Blocs Wave (Write and Read) thru the USB port?
Just found out that iPad Pro 1TB has 6GB RAM other models 4Gb.
So let me get this right:
The new very expensive iPad that Apple keeps saying is so much better than most laptops out their, can finally extend its screen like my old 2006 laptop could do, but can’t run Logic (like my old laptop used to be able to do pre Apple buying it).
The new very expensive iPad can’t have a big assed drive hooked up and used.....you guessed it, like my even older pre 2006 laptop could.
O, and this new wonder machine has no phones port? (With no free dongle this time).
Forget to laugh at the new nearly £200 keyboard and £120 mouse replacement pencil.
People say that we expect too much - damn right I do from one of the richest companies on this planet selling one of the most expensive portable computers on this planet with the most expensive add ons on this planet.
Next year they will grace us with an updated Air 2 shell with a new processor and pencil support.
At least their new pencil looks more like a pencil
I bought a slightly used Pro2 256 a month ago. After reading all the threads I am glad I did.
And did you know that the new Pencil only work on the Pro 2018 models and even more interesting the old Pencil doesn't work on the Pro 2018 models. Really good to see how Apple forges people to buy new stuff while they pobably could also do with the older stuff.
Yeah, one of the things which appeals to me greatly too. I wonder if it would be possible to connect it to a touch enabled display, that really would enable some interesting possibilities
No upgrade in Ram from old Pros means a for sure No Buy from me
Will wait for the next gen and see where we are dealing with then
Always so much potential but so much let down, I guess it’s the Apple way
The high-end model has 6 GB , apparently.
Will there also be support for external touch monitors?
I have never seen a company disappoint so often as Apple in last several years.
Steve Jobs has drilled his way to China turning in his grave.
😂 good one!
They are indeed sitting on their pile of cash and using it in everyway possible to make it bigger.
Working for them must be boring as hell for a creative innovative mind.
But Apple also don‘t tell you that most laptops out there are 300-400 dollar low speced windows machines.
I mean i‘m still a bit interested but since i really would want the 6GB RAM i would have to take the 1TB option which costs more than what i payed for my macbook pro 15“ with quadcore i7 lol.
If it’s true that only the $2000+ iPad Pro has extended RAM, I urge people out there to start an international BAN to Apple Inc!
To remove headphone jacket without any kind of public discussion is really enough for us that has “invest” ten thousands of dollars/euro (or whatever) in Apple hardware and appstore software, but, to get so fuckin” greedy so only the most expensive iPad Pro has extended RAM is to MUCH!!
Apple has been frequently removing useful things that people were used to since they started, always in the name of "magical progress". I don't know why people get all upset and outraged each time it happens, it's so easy to see this is a major strategy for them and always has been. If you're going to invest in their ecosystem to make your art, either get a device and lock it in as is the day you get it, or accept that things are going to change and roll with the hits.
Otherwise you're just going to be frustrated and disappointed, neither of which is usually that useful when it comes to being inspired to make music.
I’m one of this guys that’s always get frustrated by many decisions from Apple :-(
But, you can’t deny that the strategy Apple always have is not for us end consumers, it’s for the stockholders!
We are drug addictions, and Apple Inc. is the drug dealers, with drugs you never can get enough of, even if the cost for the drugs rising every year...
But, the problem: I lately bought an mint but used MS Surface Pro 4 (i5-8GB-256GBssd-Pen-keyboard), and, it’s a great computer, especially since Windows 10 october update, but, as an pen-wise tablets it sucks (compare to my 2017 iPad Pro 12.9”)!
Yeah, Surface is driving a full blown operating system and can run both Adobe CC and Ableton Live etc., but driving this in tablet mode is really annoying, even with the pen...
But, thru displayport I can connect it to external monitor and run this in pretty high resolution...
But, Surface can’t compete with iPads all fabulous software with very low prices...
In Windows even the simplest program cost a lot...
So, I’m in between this two drug dealers just now ;-)
But, Apple Inc. has shown more and more that we are just small people that should support the big rich people in the companies borderroom...
I’m confused just now...
They are the masters of consumerism, no doubt. At the same time, they do make some pretty cool, futuristic products we can use to make beautiful art if we choose.
I did the same very recently. I knew the new ones would be too much $$ for me, an I was right. A new 256 would cost me twice what I just paid.
To bring this back on topic, does anybody know of good USB-C hubs with multiple regular USB ports, as well as pass-through charging? We need a replacement for Apple’s powered Camera Connection Kit.
Been thinking about the I/O requirements too. As I see it, here’s what I require:
1a. Interface with MIDI keyboards (eg Arturia Minilad Mk2) for both MIDI signal and power.
1b. Interface with MIDI outboard equipment for MIDI signals.
2. Interface with Apple USB-C-to-headphone jack dongle for audio output.
3. Interface via hub between iPad and external USB-A audio interfaces (eg Roland DuoCapture).
4. SD card interface for DL photos to iPad.
5. Interface between Apple 29W/30W USB-C power brick for fast charging.
From another thread, a suggested USB-C hub looks like it has all the necessary ports to accomplish the routing for 1 thru 4. Where I’m not sure it still works is for case 5 to allow the proper charging via the USB-C power brick.
A replacement of Apple’s existing powered CCK fails as it doesn’t have an audio output route for wired headphones, hence the need for a more complex hub arrangement.
Any thoughts for the forum?
