    Mates calm down...
Just embrace the musician common sense and don’t try to get in fashion with the latest models. We don’t need them.

In fact for less than 400$€ you can buy an excellent Groovebox like mc909 or Mpc1000 which has all most of us need to do music. If not for the same price you can find some workstations (korg microarranger or PA50 if you want bigger keys). Also multitrackers etc etc.

I know iPad can do all but I can do all with my mini4... and where it lacks I can do the rest with old late 2012 mac mini (also around the 400$€ pricetag) so calm down and just make your numbers and your top priority list.

If all of this fails you can also buy an excellent windows machine for that price and do even videogames.

Apple gone nuts (well it was clear with the first iPad pro prices like macbook) and their strategy is to go premium to make a difference. The regular computer is just an echo of the past for them and iDevices are the winning horse they bet. They need to make the prices similar for the moment they replace the whole mac family with ARM and get more money (which are investing in develop these 7nm beast).

If you play their game (early adopters) you are going to pay their bills.

Breath and calm down... we can do music on few equipment... breath... calm down...

with me... I don’t need an new iPad Prooooooooooooooommmmmmmmm...

If it is still indeed 4gb of RAM, it means Photoshop has been optimized as hell for ipad cause this thing on PC is damn memory greedy (layers people, layers). And it's gonna be even more true with augmented reality. So personally, I am not buying this rumor yet. With 8 cores though, they might have worked around it with multithreading.

Agree 100%. iPads for making music are fun but if you want to go Pro Apple has also to deliver to possibilties, with mass storage options blocked I can't take it serious. Looks like they want to lure everybody into their iCloud, which means extra bucks and more dependancy.

Firm speculation at this point ? If proved correct then I think my iOS journey will be over as far as iPad when my current Air 2 gives up the ghost. I may go for a phone at some point, but it will be a bottom end one and purely for the convenience of making beats and phrases during breaks at work.

With the high prices of these newer devices and the restricted file management (which seems to never be improved) and far from painless workflow, iOS no longer seems as inviting as it once did.

I’m finished with Apple. I still think my iPad Pro 9.7 and iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd generation) are great devices and I still love using them for my artwork and making music but as for their new iDevices I think I’ll forget it.

The new iPad Pro X is a beautifull looking device but the removal of the headphone jack was the first nail in the coffin and now they expect consumers to pay even more for the new pencil and extra dongles and what makes it worse is that the old pencil isn’t supported. Sheesh!

I was really hoping Apple would of released a new iPad mini in the same design and the headphones jack was kept but that unfortunately wasn’t to be. I recently bought a Surface tablet and really impressed with using Ableton Live with Yeco and I am very happy with it. The only thing I miss from the iPad is the great battery life and BM3 because the battery life on the Surface is terrible.

Same here Andy. Although I am going to buy a IPad Pro second Hand at some point.

Been thinking about the I/O requirements too. As I see it, here’s what I require:

1a. Interface with MIDI keyboards (eg Arturia Minilad Mk2) for both MIDI signal and power.
1b. Interface with MIDI outboard equipment for MIDI signals.
    2. Interface with Apple USB-C-to-headphone jack dongle for audio output.
    3. Interface via hub between iPad and external USB-A audio interfaces (eg Roland DuoCapture).
    4. SD card interface for DL photos to iPad.
    5. Interface between Apple 29W/30W USB-C power brick for fast charging.

From another thread, a suggested USB-C hub looks like it has all the necessary ports to accomplish the routing for 1 thru 4. Where I’m not sure it still works is for case 5 to allow the proper charging via the USB-C power brick.

A replacement of Apple’s existing powered CCK fails as it doesn’t have an audio output route for wired headphones, hence the need for a more complex hub arrangement.

    Any thoughts for the forum?

It looks like any USB-C hub with pass-through power will do the trick. The Wirecutter has a few good suggestions.

So who seriously need a new iPad Pro NOW?
I’m quite happy with the 2. Generation and im sure it will serve me the next years very well.
We don’t need always the newest, or?

I think 2. Generation iPad Pro is quite powerful to make some nice music with. So I’m not worry, I’m happy with the iPads I own! 😊

As a side effect many Pro owner will upgrade. So the previous iPad Pro are getting cheaper in the second hand market. It’s a good time upgrading an Air...

  • I want you all to buy new iPads so that there are more available 10.5s second Hand and the prices will drop :D

  • This latest release sold me on the older generation pro as well. Really disappointed with Apple these days. Their new MacBook line is a complete mess as well.

It's not exactly a mess, it's more like shooting themselves in the foot. Who's gonna buy a macbook now if they can get the air with a bigger screen and faster CPU 100$ cheaper?

Yeah, that’s the sore point. I really wish Propellerhead would support multi touch on a future Reason update but I cannot see it happening just yet.

I wish Ableton would also support multi touch but there is a brilliant multi touch Ableton controller app available called Yeco. The good thing about Yeco is that it works on the same device as Ableton is installed on so no messing with usb or WiFi. The app is fantastic. I hope the dev updates Yeco to support midi note editing.

Actually, none of those would accomplish what I need as it only has a single USB-C port (for charge pass-thru) whereas I need an additional port for the USB-C-to-headphone dongle, as well as wanting to have at least one more USB-C port for future expansion.

  • All Apple product placements are designed to sell up. It may look a mess at times, but they have it down to a fine art - ‘damn I can’t deal with 64gb, so now I’ve got to pay for the 256gb’ or ‘this 256gb Model is fine, but I need such and such, so I’ve got to get the next model up’ or ‘the iPad does most of what I want, but I can’t just plug in such and such, so I must buy a MAC too’

The whole Apple ecosystem is designed around making sure you need to keep handing over money to them.

Yeah, and as well in times when you can save files in so many clouds, dropbox, mails, and so on, if they don't add up some features to push people to buy stupidly out of logic and useless stuff anyway, they would be at a loss for genius ideas. I know.

Good point! And once in the eco system it's hard to get out. Look at yourself. You stay in it but look on the 2nd hand market. That counts for a lot of people so this system stays renewing itself as long as everybody stays in it. The early adaptors get nice prices for their 2nd hand stuff so value keeps high. Looks like junkies that are addicted and go for worser quality of shit, as long as they can get it nobody complains. Except the junkies that talk complain of the quality. If you really want to break the circle start looking for real alternatives. As long as you don't Appleand it's stockholders will be satisfied.

So the Verge says extended display. You need mouse support for extended display.
iOS doesn't have mouse support and will not. So that will not work.

Yeah, it’s still being developed AFAIK. The last update was in 2017 which included browser support where vsts, plugins and Ableton instruments can be opened and launched. At the moment I’m using the 14 days demo version but I’m going to wait until there is a sale before I decide to buy the licence which works on three devices.

Not necessarily. There was some snippet during the presentation that showed a monitor displaying a photo, which was also on the iPad but the iPad had a toolbar or palette as well. So it could potentially be usable as a non-interactive viewport for larger, uncluttered display.
