Seconded... I ax'd for decay to be a mod knob. There's room...
@brambos, I don’t know what kind of deep magic you did on the bit driver and f.boost knobs, but they are fantastic! Especially the bit driver. That’s hands-down the best distortion I’ve heard for percussion ever. I rarely use the bitcrush on Ruismaker, and the saturate on FM (a bit too harsh for my taste but rarely need them anyway), but this is just superb! And the f.boost is so easy to dial in to just the right sweet spot.
I try to make my self save those two for “desert”, getting a sound I like, then just putting it way over the top with those two knobs. I’d pay money for those two as a standalone AU FX.
+1. I don’t normally go for bit crushing and distortions, but those and the Grit dial are getting a lot of use here.
Yeah - those have a more analog sound to them than, say AD Grit, which is a good digital crusher, but is clearly digital, whereas Noir's controls ... have more harmonics? Not sure what the secret sauce is, but it should be carried forward - or even be a $2.99 AUv3 so we can route other audio through those bad boys. NoirFX. Noirinator. Noir Repressor. Bruiser. Ok.... clearly I'm not to be in charge of naming.
Yep. It all sounds really good.
I’ve made about 25 preset sounds/patterns that I think are pretty decent just while fiddling with the app for a few hours. It’s incredibly easy to come up with something nice, but unique sounding.
Can I second your second since you already requested this? I like the idea of making it a 7th core mod knob. @brambos
Hahaha good one but I didn't explain myself correctly. Let's say I like how it sounds precisely but I just wanna adjust the velocity of certain sliders without affecting the pitch thingy. (so it doesn't reset it to 0). Velocity doesn't matter cuz it's not as perceptible as the pitch when you move it just a bit. That's what I meant by locking the pitch so it doesn't get affected. Anyway for answering.

Great that you like 'em! I spent more time than I'd like to admit getting them right. They're tuned/matched to the Noir synth engine, so I'm not sure how well they'd work as a standalone effect. In fact, I think I've swapped out every aspect of Noir at least three times because I wasn't happy with how it all came together, but ultimately what it is today has exactly the coherence that makes it work as a whole, I feel
The final result shows the work that went into it.
@brambos THANK YOU for the update. Pattern shift = Yes!
The fix for the unclickable dialog issue should be out now!
I’d still love to see multiple patterns like in the Rozeta suite, or a sequencer like this one added to the Rozeta suite. But I’m not complaining. My favorite app of the year so far, and surely in my top 10 of all time.
Just got this- it does have a touch of genius about it. It’s like it has a backstage pass or something.
There’s some kind of voodoo going on with this app, it has the same controls as other mono synths but so much more character and bass power.
+1 (because we're never satisfied right @brambos ?)
Ok, so I appreciate the waves this app is making and I dig the sound myself but...
I expected it to be along the same lines like previous Ruismakers I.e. one app with 8 different sounds. What I find is an app that requires several instances to get to the same state. Unless I’m missing something.
There’s nothing wrong with this per se but it takes ages to set up and from what I’ve experienced the CPU takes a hit because of that. I’ve created a four part kit and I started getting latency crackles that I haven’t heard since I’ve moved to pro 10.5.
Anyone has a solution to this?...and don’t say ‘get a faster iPad’ please
I’ve made multiple-instance setups in AUM on my Air 1 with no issues. This is a different instrument from the other Ruismakers and takes a different approach. It’s more of a synthesizer than a drum machine.
Don’t realy have it down yet but the usage is different. I will be using it as an addon to regular drums. Noisy loops to create flavor. Or maybe minimal drumscapes. But if i need a kick i don’t think i’ll use this.
It's not exactly designed to be used like a conventional multi-timbral drum machine. The whole point was to break away from that, because there are more than enough regular drum machines on iOS already, both sample based and synth based. I reckon making another one would be kind of redundant
The philosophy of Noir is that you take one synth voice, and use velocity and pitch as dimensions for creating a multitude of related-but-different percussion sounds which seamlessly morph. So one (or two, three tops) instances of Noir should be more than enough to take care of drum duties.
Having said that, you should be able to easily run at least 8-10 instances on an iPad Pro without crackles. I can run 8 on my Air 2 (at 256 frames buffer)
I don't know what that really mean but I like the feel of it
I’ve heard some excellent kicks out of Noir. Funny how people are always crying for “something new” and when they get it, (i.e.: Noir) they say it doesn’t do “insert same old thing here”.
The only thing close to Noir IMHO is Seekbeats.
I had this mental picture of hanging out with Jeff Mills, having a beer after a session of pounding techno.
I feel like you agreed AND disagreed with me.
Anyhoo,
@brambos as previosuly mentioned, the grit and other 2 distortion knobs are amazing. Soo tasty. So different. And thise random buttons are so well calibrated or whatever is going on. It’s rare that 2 pushes at the most aren’t immediately useable.
Yeah no problems here on my Air 2 - can run three or four instances along with some synths and fx, with no issues at all.
Honestly, I'm finding that because of the insane range of sounds you get by using modulation, you don't need more than like 2-3 instances going at once. I have setups with like 8, but anything above 3 is for mixing/muting in as it evolves.
It's not like a drum machine where you "need" and instrument for each voice.
You can get a kick, hats, & snare all from the same instance on the same track at the same time.
It's really up to how one uses it. I'm looking for something that can be played live with a pad so 4 pads = 4 instances. I see peeps here are mostly into the sequenced stuff which makes their need completely different.
Can’t you assign different note-pitches of the same instance to those four pads?
I’m talking drum pads. That will give me 4 pitches of the same sound right? Or am I still not getting it? (Very possible)
Not necessarily. The trick is using the pitch and velocity modulations to transform that one voice from one thing into another. If you go through the presets you’ll find examples that sound like a kick in low registers and a snare or hihat in the highest pitches (and interesting hybrids in between).
I'm treating it more like a complex single drum, a djembe, a snare, tabla. Add it to a song with either Ruismaker or Ruismaker FM and you have a very complete drum/percussion section and just two are very low CPU.
There are pros and cons though sure.
One pro is playing with the filter cut off, grit, or decay etc. (those I just esp like) affects all the 'drums.' I suppose you could do that for a multi-timbral instrument too, but this seems more natural. And you have to really jump some octaves to use the pitch mod. Set up my mod wheel for an octave or two and its quite sweet.
Another pro, I've got a few instances in songs now that are pitched, though not really overtly so.
