@ExAsperis99 @MonzoPro and the rest of you, thanks a lot for your support, this thread has been amazing for all the feedback and encouragement. I've been doing this stuff part time, but in about 3 weeks I think I'm going to jump ship and make it a full-time endeavour, bit of a pay-cut, but it's doing what I love and I'm not starving, and every day I spend not working on music software feels like a bit of a wasted day! thanks again everyone!!

Fantastic to hear. The greatest thing of all is to make your living doing what you love. You must be buzzing! 👊

you might have found yourself a nice little niche as there aren't many devs out there that really understand the appeal of the sp, and if you're gonna kick your day job to the curb I for one would just like to alert you that there's gold in them there hills in the form of any sampling beat machines that have extensive sample editing, FX that help you flip samples organically and mangle them in musical ways.. shifting time and space.. (not talking about distortions, decimators, bit crushers, and reverbs)... Motion sequencing and parameter locks combined with sample editing is always a winner.

also there is money on the table waiting for anyone that brings a stripped down but creative ableton live session mode app to the table again with a gang of interesting fx and parameter locks.

and nobody is emulating the monome 7up app etc... on iOS for no apparent reason I guess some people just don't like money, but anyways this whole category of app needs filling on iOS cause right now it's a big hole.

If someone could make a simple grid based clip launcher for Ableton, that doesn’t cost £30 I’d be happy. Nothing fancy, just some little boxes I can tap on and off.

That's kind of Launchpad, isn't it? And Modstep. But yeah, nothing's really duplicating Ableton.
What I'd like to see is basically Koala the way it is, but with iMPC Pro2's waveform editing ability.

yeah we could do with some more controllers but the amount of self contained sample importing options is downright shameful.... IOS is absolutely perfect for two types of instrument, touch synths like TC-11/ikaossilator and grid instruments like the launchpad app/and ReMix only a lot more flexible but for some reason they are the least represented kinds on the platform even though an iPad is a natural for these kinds of workflows.

  • Thanks for the update @elf_audio

I’ve never hooked it up to any MIDI controllers and I’m not home or I’d check.. does it support bluetooth keyboards and can you modulate the start and end points of samples via MIDI like you can in Gadget/Vancouver?

I’m after an Ableton controller ;) There’s Touchable Pro, and a couple of others, but they’re pricey, and don’t seem to get many updates. Launchpad is great, if only it had a MIDI out mode.....

I think it’s a shame, there’s a lot of ‘almost there’, abandoned, discontinued etc. but no killer app. You could probably envisage one, by picking the best bits from about ten different apps, but still it doesn’t exist. Probably why I still do all my composing on the desktop.

  • Nice Update! @elf_audio Loving the Vanilla & Strawberry flavors of fx :)
Also congrats on pursuing this as your full time gig.. follow that dream with everything you've got.. What you've accomplished with Koala in this short time is.. an amazing feat! You definitely have skills - BUT - also the insight as to what CREATING music is all about on iOS.. Fun, Fun, Fun! Can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve..

@elf_audio thanks for update - excellent work :) cool new FX - Koala will only get better & better. Dude your genius - the app is only 7.3mb with all these functions and fx

  • Thanks all!

I do have pipe dreams about something like that, but wouldn't want to attempt to make killer app - koala isn't intended as a killer app for sampling - the point of it for me has always been to create an environment that manipulates you as a musician to make music in a slightly different way than you're used to, to hopefully coax some extra creativity or expression out. So I think that's what I'd do with a clip launcher thing.

It's impossible to make an app that can be all things to everyone at the same time as being easy to use (at least for me), so if I did do some sort clip launcher thing, it would probably be in a similar vein to koala. It would probably also a bit oriented towards live looping (something which ableton live really sucks at), but with the ability to import audio, and a real must would be to have some sort of temporal warping.

I like the way you think. Koala does stretch my creativity so target hit there. I struggle to think of how a clip launcher would do the same but I bet you could nail it better than most given your approach with koala.

  • @elf_audio Future update suggestions even as IAP’s & all in your own time :-)
    1.record count in
    2.pad solo/mute
    3.pad choke groups
    4.zoom waveform in sample edit
    5.HaaS delay left/right (stereoizer)
6.auto jump to next sequence (settings/options)
    7.ADSR (envelope) per pad
As IAP’s I & many would happily pay for & could get you some financial revenue which you truly deserve. Koala as it stands is excellent. Thanks as always. Has to be said Koala I can see as being the number 1 sampling drum machine app. Excellent work elf.

@elf_audio two last suggestion (for today haha :) If can get some visual reference in the Perfomance Sliders. I.e a visual amount readout like in percentages 0 - 100%.
Wobble Fx in Performance mode. This with the new Compressor brings closer to the Sp303 (vinyl sim) would be an excellent combo.

  • @stormbeats some effects are quite complicated in how the work so it’s difficult to give a single readout - for instance “vibroflange” is a vibrato and flanger depending on if you go up or down. If you go down to about 25% on the slider it will do a pretty convincing vinyl wobble

Also, the “tempo delay”, if you set it to about 10% will give you a HAAS effect

@elf_audio ok cool Yes was literally as we speak experimenting with the vibroflange. Cheers

The 'killer app' was just a reply to Kobamoto - wasn't suggesting you should do that ;) And I think Koala is perfect as it is.

As for the clip launcher - I'd be happy with a basic grid that MIDI's out to Ableton, so I can launch clips on there. Simple, clean and cheap, so it's not a pain for the dev to keep updated and relatively easy to build. Price that at a fiver and I reckon you'd get every Ableton/iPad owner signed up within weeks. Not looking for a Push 2 alternative, just something I can launch clips with quickly while recording into the arrangement view.

  • @EyeOhEss C and D are definitely super important. Next major release is the automation/parameter lock version, and would love to be able to load kits etc. Also want it to have some built in kits, like 808 etc

    @MonzoPro got it

  • @elf_audio this really needs landscape mode.
    PLEASE

  • @gsm909 really want to do it, need to set aside quite a long time to do it first. Its definitely on the list!

  • edited July 2019

@elf_audio if easier Mute/Solo Bank A B C D or to start with even just the option for one bank. This would help a lot when chopping loads of slices and want to resample and need to mute other sounds especially when those other sounds might be using Performance mode.
Saying that though whilst experimenting could be good to have Performance settings independant for each bank . Only if possible. Just thinking of easier ways to get muting within koala as its heavily based on resampling. Also thought maybe Sample Mutes within Sample Window if the Mute Pads/Banks might be hard to implement. Can see a Sample Mute/Solo tab next to the One Shot tab in my imagination that is :). Personally I think the effects part of the app are enough. and sound great.
